Lenovo: RT Tablets to Cost $300 Less than Windows 8 Slates

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 09:21 AM PDT

No matter how much we'd like it to happen, Microsoft probably isn't going to launch Surface starting a mere $199, as has been rumored this week. Not only would such an aggressive pricing strategy further piss off Microsoft's hardware partners, it would also require selling the device at a significant loss. So, how much will Surface cost? Nobody knows for sure, but according to Lenovo, Windows RT versions will be priced up to $300 less than their Windows 8 counterparts.

"RT will play in consumer and retail at very aggressive price points," David Schmoock, head of Lenovo's North America operations, told Bloomberg in an interview. "It will do well but it's going to be more of a consumer price point play to begin with."

Schmook also suggested Windows 8 Surface tablets will sell for $600 and $700, so unless our math is fuzzy, that means Windows RT-based tablets will debut anywhere from $300 to $500, which seems a more reasonable prediction than $199.

If you haven't been following, Windows RT tablets will feature ARM-based hardware inside, while higher end Windows 8 tablets support x86 processor from Intel and AMD.

This week's hottest reviews on TechRadar

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 09:07 AM PDT

Panasonic TX-P65VT50B

This week has been great for televisual treats on TechRadar, with not one, but two Panasonic televisions scoring full marks when they were put through our rigorous testing.

And it's not all about televisions either, with some great laptops such as the HP Envy 6 and motherboards like the Asus P8H77-I on offer...

Panasonic TX-P65VT50B review

While the Panasonic P65VT50 has stood imposingly on our test benches, it's affectionately become known as the beast. Why? Because it's arguably the most uncompromising TV ever.

For starters there's its size. At 65 inches, its screen is the joint biggest in Panasonic's 2012 television range. In fact, it would be the biggest TV (as opposed to professional monitor) around from anyone had Sharp not recently launched 70-inch and 80-inch LCD TVs.

Since it uses plasma rather than LCD screen technology, the Panasonic Viera TX-P65VT50's chassis is much meatier than that of most modern TVs, too, thanks to a pretty chunky expanse of bezel by today's standards, as well as a degree of back-mauling heft that hasn't been experienced since the beefy days of the CRT. Certainly if you want to hang the Panasonic TX-P65VT50 up, you'll need a very sturdy wall.

HP Envy 6

Panasonic TX-P42GT50 review

Looks-wise, the HP Envy 6 has a distinctly Envy appearance, with a serious black finish on top and a kind of wine red underneath. It's a handsome machine, though it would look even nicer without the Beats logo (sported because it packs in Beats-branded speakers, complete with subwoofer), light-up power button and various Intel/Windows/HP stickers (though these are at least monochrome, so don't stand out too badly).

The only problem is that the brushed aluminium-look surfaces pick up fingerprints and dust to a ridiculous degree. It'll drive the more obsessive compulsive owners mad, and it's a shame because, as we said, it's a looker of a laptop otherwise.

Asus P8H77-I review

Panasonic TX-P42GT50 review

The Intel H77 chipset is the little brother to the beefier Z77 Ivy Bridge chipset, and when we're talking about the P8H77-I we really do mean little. This is another mini-ITX board in the MiniMax range from Asus and that means it's only slightly larger than a CD.

As a H77 board it's also not going to be as feature-rich as the more advanced Z77 chipset, and there are also a few artificial restrictions put in place by Intel itself for general marketing/categorisation reasons.
The main restriction, as far as us obsessive tweakers are concerned, is the lack of any real overclocking allowed by this more mainstream chipset. That's a shame, but not really a surprise.

Panasonic TX-P42GT50 review

Panasonic TX-P42GT50 review

With Panasonic's ST50 and VT50 TVs already setting the AV world alight, is there room for the Panasonic TX-P42GT50 that sits between them? Actually yes.

The Panasonic TX-P42GT50 gets off to a great start by offering features galore by 42-inch standards. Highlights include 3D, online video/gaming/information services, an advanced version of Panasonic's very latest plasma panel design, THX endorsement and decent amounts of multimedia flexibility. There's even a Freesat tuner to accompany the Freeview one, if that floats your boat.

The real star of the Panasonic TX-P42GT50's show, though, is its picture quality, which is nothing short of outstanding - especially (though not exclusively) if you dim the lights to watch a Blu-ray movie.

Facebook Shares Dip Below $20 for First Time

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 08:15 AM PDT

For all the hype leading up to Facebook's Initial Public Offering (IPO) in May of this year, it's somewhat hard to believe the social networking site is performing so poorly in the stock market. It's not shocking that Facebook hasn't lived up to all those inflated valuations that came courtesy of hefty private investments before being traded on the public market, but would you have guessed it would become the second worst performing IPO post share lock-up? Let us explain if you don't know what that means.

Some two billion shares held by early investors and employees are now eligible to be sold, whereas previously they were tied up in a so-called "lock-up" period for 90 days. The idea is to prevent early investors and insiders from dumping stock on the first day.

Now that the lockup period is over, investors can't rid themselves of Facebook shares quick enough, and as a result, the social networking site's stock is tanking. Facebook shares are currently trading for around $19 a pop. It's the first time the company's stock has dropped below $20, which has now lost 50 percent of its value since debuting in May at $38.

According to Bloomberg, only Zynga has performed worse in post lock-up trading, which dropped 7.9 percent on the first day insiders could trade stock.

Kingston Adds a 'Predator' to HyperX Memory Family

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 07:53 AM PDT

It's too bad for Kingston there's not an award for 'Best DDR3 RAM Memory Name', because if there was, the company's new Predator modules would be a shoe-in. And then wouldn't it be awesome if Corsair or another competitor came out with an Aliens system memory line? Ah, but we digress. Killer name aside, Predator represents the newest addition to Kingston's HyperX memory family, and it takes direct aim at "extreme enthusiasts and overclockers," the company says.

HyperX Predator modules don a more aggressive suit of armor to dissipate heat than previous HyperX variants, underneath which sit cherry-picked memory chips ranging in frequency from 1600MHz to 2666MHz.

"The PC gaming market is robust and growing and we are pleased to contribute to that market with our new, more aggressive HyperX Predator memory kits," said Mark Tekunoff, senior technology manager, Kingston. "Enthusiasts will experience higher performance, ultra-responsive multitasking possibilities and an overall faster system thanks to its top optimized performance settings for specific modules ― handpicked and tested by our Kingston engineers."

HyperX Predator kits of 2 and 4 come in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities. No word yet on when you'll able to purchase them or for how much.

Los Angeles Restaurant Deducts 5 Percent for Patrons Who Put Away Their Phones

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 07:34 AM PDT

When I was growing up, I knew better than to wear a baseball cap at the dinner table and risk the wrath of my mother, a woman of Italian descent who could cook up a storm and asked (demanded, really) proper manners in return. To this day I won't wear a hat at a dinner table, even if is socially acceptable on a casual basis, but I have been known to whip out my smartphone for one reason or another, a practice my mother would have also banned if they were around when I was growing up, and one that can result in a higher dinner bill.

According to a CNN Money report, Eva Restaurant in Los Angeles will deduct 5 percent from your dinner bill if you forego Facebooking and hand your mobile phone to the receptionist before sitting down to eat.

"Eva is really about family and being at home. That's what we want to exemplify," Mark Gold, a chef who runs the restaurant with his wife, Alejandra, told CNN Money.

Gold says his discount policy is something patrons "get really enthusiastic about" and estimates that as many as half of his customers take him up on the offer. There are other restaurants in the area that encourage cell phone abstinence while eating, but his is the first to offer a discount.

What do you think, would you be willing to hand off your cell phone for a 5 percent discount on your dinner bill?

Dunkin' Donuts Dips into Mobile App Payments

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 07:08 AM PDT

If there's a better way to wipe off the morning grogginess than by washing down sugary treats with a strong cup of joe, we haven't found it yet. In the meantime, we consider coffee and baked goods a perfectly acceptable way to start off the day, and if you're a fan of Dunkin' Donuts, you don't even need to fumble through your wallet for loose bills now that the chain accepts mobile payments.

Dunkin' Donuts is the latest of a growing number of establishments that allow patrons to pay for goods and services with their smartphone, tablet, or other mobile device. Similar to the Starbucks app, coffee (and donut) lovers can pre-load funds into the mobile app, lookup menu items, see nutritional information, and more. You can also send virtual gift cards in increments of $2 to $100 to be delivered via text message, email, or through Facebook.

The app is available on Android (Google Play) and iOS (iTunes) and supports American Express, Discover, Mastercard, Visa, and PayPal. Buckazoids are not accepted at this time.

Google Entices Chrome Bug Hunters with More Lucrative Bounties

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 06:47 AM PDT

Catching bugs in your spare time can turn into a lucrative hobby, provided the bugs you're hunting reside in Google's Chrome browser. The Chromium Vulnerability Rewards Program has shelled out over $1 million to date, putting money in the pockets of security researchers who help make Chrome more secure, and it's about to start doling out larger payments for flaws that have become increasingly hard to find.

"Recently, we've seen a significant drop-off in externally reported Chromium security issues. This signals to us that bugs are becoming harder to find, as the efforts of the wider community have made Chromium significantly stronger," Google stated on its Chromium blog.

Researchers who discover "particularly exploitable" issues will receive a bonus payment of at least $1,000 on top of the base reward. Google is also now offering minimum $1,000 bonus payments for discovering bugs in stable areas of Chrome's code base, as well as for serious bugs that impact a significantly wider range of products, such as open source parsing libraries.

It's unlikely anyone could make a living by just hunting Chrome bugs, even with the bonus incentives, but it is a great way to beef up the bank account. Google has, at times, awarded bug hunters upwards of $10,000, plenty enough to build a Dream Machine caliber PC with money to spare.

Department of Justice Tweaks Verizon's $3.6 Billion Spectrum Deal

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 06:21 AM PDT

The U.S. Department of Justice said it would approve a $3.6 spectrum deal between Verizon and four cable companies -- Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, and Cox Communications -- if certain changes are made to a series of agreements that it deemed anti-competitive. As originally constructed, the DoJ feared the deal would ultimately harm competition and lead to higher prices and lower quality service for consumers.

Verizon struck agreements with the four largest cable companies in the U.S. last year to purchase spectrum that it intends to use to flesh out its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. As part of the deal, cable companies would be able to bundle Verizon 4G plans in with their own offerings.

"By limiting the scope and duration of the commercial agreements among Verizon and the cable companies while at the same time allowing Verizon and T-Mobile to proceed with their spectrum acquisitions, the department has provided the right remedy for competition and consumers," said Joseph Wayland, Acting Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division. "The Antitrust Division's enforcement action ensures that robust competition between Verizon and the cable companies continues now and in the future as technological change alters the telecommunications landscape."

As approved by the DoJ, the companies in the deal will be subject to a review every four years and must submit regular reports in the meantime. In addition, in areas where Verizon's FiOS service isn't offered, Verizon must sell the local cable company's Internet and service bundles.

Lenovo Confident of Besting Surface with 'Better Hardware'

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 06:18 AM PDT

Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing is the latest PC industry honcho to share his thoughts on Microsoft's upcoming Surface tablet family. Even though Microsoft has yet to reveal what exactly lies beneath the Surface, Yuanqing is convinced that regardless of whatever it is that's inside, the Chinese PC vendor, a Windows RT launch partner, will have no problem bettering it.

During the company's Q1 2013 earnings call, the Lenovo boss gave his thoughts on the Microsoft Surface and its impact on the relationship between the two companies. If he's worried about the upcoming tablet from Redmond, he did a pretty good job of smothering those concerns and feigning total insouciance.

"[They're] just one of our many competitors. We are still confident that we are providing much better hardware than our competitors including Microsoft. They are strong in software, but [we] don't believe they can provide the best hardware in the world. Lenovo can," Yuanqing said at the company's latest earnings call.

"To be frank, we're not that worried about [Surface]. Microsoft is still our strategy partner," he continued. "We are very optimistic on the Windows 8 launch so we will fully leverage that to launch our new products."

However, he admitted that ideally he would like to see Microsoft restrict itself to software.

Firefall design team scoops up dozens of former Bioware and 38 Studios devs
While some other studios are laying off and downsizing, RED 5 is bucking the trend by recruiting top talent to add to the team working on Firefall. The free-to-play MMOFPS is gearing up for a massive summer patch that overhauls combat, removes traditional levels, and adds new crafting functionality.

BioWare's and 38 Studios' loss is Red 5's gain; staff has jumped from 60 to over 100 by snatching up talent the other companies let go. Although a deluge of layoffs is bad for the gaming industry as a whole, lead class designer Dave Williams said, "The timing of 38 Studios and Star Wars dumping all their staff at the same time is really good for us. We've found some incredibly talented people who are really happy. It's allowed us to build up the team quickly."

Players wishing to participate in Firefall's beta and experience the game can sign up via the official site.

Lord of the Rings fan film to screen at GenCon
Tolkien fans are many, but few have the opportunity to see their creative works honoring Lord of the Rings presented before large audiences. One lucky group of fans will have just that. The fan film The Fellows Hip will be screened at GenCon. Fans can catch the movie on Friday, August 17th at 1:30 p.m. EDT in the Westin Grand Ballroom IV and Saturday, August 18th at 9:30 p.m. EDT in the Westin Grand Ballroom V. Folks who miss these showings can also watch the film at DragonCon or even this weekend's Return of the Ring celebration in the UK.

In the film, a fellowship of four gamers embarks on their own epic journey to fight injustice, right a wrong, expose evil, and possibly even conquer at a Lord of the Rings Online gaming competition. While noting that the film does include parody, the creators emphasize that the film is an homage to Tolkien's great works that combines their love of LOTR with their love of MMO gaming.

Watch as a black rider makes the heroes dive for cover in the teaser trailer after the cut. And to learn more about the film, be sure to read Massively's interview with the creators.

Some Assembly Required Directing your own Star Trek episodes with the Foundry
To boldly go where no SAR has gone before... but not for a lack of trying, I assure you! Yes, folks, I have actually attempted to explore the topic of Star Trek Online's Foundry for Some Assembly Required on numerous occasions since this column debuted over a year ago, but I was thwarted each time. This mission generator, which offers STO players the chance to infuse the game with their own stories, has had a very rocky life; there have been extended stretches when the feature has been in, shall we say, a less-than-working form. Hopefully, that is all in the past now.

Luckily for fans of player-generated content, the Foundry has recently come back online. And with the revelations the in the July state-of-the-game letter and the recent Foundry Season 6 dev blog, it appears the system is getting some real attention from the developers. Soon players will have more tools and better customization to compose their missions and tell their own stories.

Do you have a story you want to tell? Keep reading for quick guide to the nuts and bolts of this feature that allows you to create your own bit of personal Star Trek lore.

City of Steam's final alpha weekend begins
City of Steam is waving goodbye to its adolescent phase and preparing for adulthood, as the steampunk MMO heads into its final alpha test weekend. This fourth alpha weekend begins tonight at 10:00 p.m. EDT.

Mechanist Games said that its priority for the weekend is to stress test the game, so the team wants as many players as possible to dive in and give it a whirl. You can sign up for testing on the game's website.

For this final alpha test, Mechanist Games has spotlighted Orcs in its most recent racial dev journal. The Orcs were former barbarians that are trying hard to integrate into this increasingly civilized world.

Guild Wars 2 clarifies guesting, world transfers, and regions

      Posted: 16 Aug 2012 07:30 PM PDT

      Guild Wars 2
The launch of Guild Wars 2 is drawing ever nearer, which means there's an ever-diminishing amount of time to disseminate information to the writhing hordes. A news post today shed light on some of ArenaNet's policies and technomagics that go into supporting the game's accessibility.

To begin with, there are three main regions recognized by the game: North America, Europe, and Other. Digital versions of the game are automatically entered into the correct region based on the purchaser's location, while physical retailers give out a serial code to register in account creation. Players must register a code that matches their location (a customer in Europe has to register a European code), but after that one-time check, they can access the game from anywhere in the world.

Home worlds are automatically displayed by region, but players can opt to join the servers of another region. Once a home world has been chosen, all characters on an account belong to that server, and a gem transaction has to be made to switch to a new home world. That won't be implemented at launch, however, in order to facilitate the spread of a stable and healthy population across all servers. At launch, transfers between worlds will be free. After the populations have settled, world transfers will be restricted to a once per week and cost gems. At the same time, the guesting feature that allows players to visit their friends' worlds will be implemented.

Check out the news post for all the gory details, or hit up the Guild Wars 2 knowledge base if you've got some burning tangential questions.

I'm going to go right ahead and say that I really don't like the Pandaren in World of Warcraft at all. But it's not because they're pandas. It's because they're the definition of an in-joke taken to ridiculous levels, like an entire race dedicated to Steve Carrell saying, "I love lamp." If you want to be upset about Mists of Pandaria, please, do so about the things that are actually worth being upset over. The existence of ailuropoda melanoleuca is not on that list.

You want a list of what is worth being upset over? Sorry, but this week's installment of Ask Massively isn't about that; it's about the onrushing specter of the Guild Wars 2 launch and the continual scourge of the comment system bugs. If you've got a question you'd like to see in a future installment of the column, send it along to ask@massively.com or leave it in the comments below. Questions may be edited slightly for clarity and/or brevity.

New developer diary explores Minstrel improvements for Lord of the Rings Online

Okay, a jaunty tune on my flute will convince you to kill those wolves, right? I really don't want to be eaten by a wolf.
You might think that bringing a lute to a swordfight sounds ridiculous, but any Lord of the Rings Online player knows better than to downplay the importance of a Minstrel. Unlike some of the other classes whose changes have been previewed for the upcoming Riders of Rohan expansion, Minstrels aren't receiving any sweeping changes, but they still are getting an update pass. The latest development diary on the official site covers these improvements, all of which should help Minstrels be more effective and fun to play.

Small changes rule the day here, with improvements to buffs and a new area attack mimicking a single-target debuff. A few mechanical shifts, such as ensuring that Minstrel attacks which apply buffs to allies will always apply those buffs even if the attack itself is unsuccessful, should also help the class. Players looking for all the details on how their instrument-playing life is going to get just a little bit easier should look at the full diary for the fine details.

The Guild Counsel Five Essentials of Guild Management
We've seen a recent wave of new MMOs launch, and in just a few more weeks, we'll probably see the launch of one of the most anticipated titles of the year, Guild Wars 2. That, along with the upcoming launch of World of Warcraft's expansion, means there will be many new guilds springing up, some of which will be headed by brand-new guild leaders. Everyone wants a roster full of happy pandas, but sometimes that's easier said than done.

There are lots of issues to deal with when it comes to running a guild, and there's a lot of nuance that factors into whether a guild is successful in the long run. We've looked at many of them in this column, but in this week's Guild Counsel, we'll highlight five of the essentials that must be considered when you're leading a guild.

MechWarrior Online shows off the Hunchback

Of course, the video doesn't mention what happens to a Hunchback not in an urban setting, but let's just say it's not pretty.
The Hunchback is not the prettiest machine in MechWarrior Online. It's not meant to be, and quite frankly, it doesn't need to be. This little 50-ton machine is all about taking hits and giving back as good as it gets. It's a classic design for showing off what a medium 'Mech can do, and it's also the subject of the newest video from the staff at Piranha Games.

Solidly in the middle of the spectrum of weights, the Hunchback boasts a sizable amount of armor for its frame and a respectable speed as well. Its armaments might seem light at first, but the AC/20 mounted in its shoulder provides a great deal of punch, and the lasers on its arm and head can carve opponents up in short-range engagements. Take a look at the trailer just after the break to see the machine in action -- even if it's not pretty in stills, its performance more than makes up for looking a little ungainly.

Fantasy MMO RIFT has been regularly updated with new content since launch, but its upcoming Storm Legion expansion has the potential to blow all previous updates out of the water. The expansion will triple the size of the game world with the two brand-new continents of Brevane and Dusken. Between them, the new continents will launch with 11 new zones, seven new dungeons, three new raids and a new capital city.

At Gamescom 2012 this week, Trion Worlds revealed further details of the new expansion with a full walkthrough. The expansion aims to add even more customisation options to the already expansive game, with one new soul per calling and all existing souls being extended up to the new level cap of 60. Check out the walkthrough video after the cut to see the new Harbinger soul in action and several of the new game zones.

Gamescom 2012: Matt Higby sheds light on PlanetSide 2's factions and design

And if you're looking to take a joking quote from a designer out of context, I'm sure you can find one in here.
PlanetSide engendered some fierce faction loyalty, which carries over quite naturally to PlanetSide 2. According to Matt Higby in a new interview at Gamescom 2012, every faction's players feel like their faction needs more attention in the early release material. The main challenge of design is keeping all three factions balanced while ensuring that all three are different enough to feel distinct. Higby stresses that the team is trying to push the differences as far as possible without creating balance problems.

Another major issue that Higby brings up is ensuring that new players can get into the game without removing anything that old players enjoyed about the original. That means new mechanics to help players drop in if they've never played before, but the same core design of gathering hundreds of players to accomplish sweeping tactical objectives. Check out the full video after the break for more of Higby's insights into design; the video starts off in German, but the interview itself is in English.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has irons in the fire. Not just the business model switch taking place in November, either; there are a lot of other pieces of content being developed, some of which the development team is previewing at Gamescom 2012. The newest trailer for the game is focused on other previews, however, covering on the upcoming new Operation, a new planet, and a new species for players to run around as.

The addition of Cathar to the list of playable species has been known for some time, but this video shows a Cathar Smuggler in action. It also shows a small taste of what players can expect from the upcoming addition of the planet Makeb and the Operation Terror from Beyond. It's a brief trailer, to be sure, but it shows off plenty to look forward to, whether you're a long-time fan or you're just waiting for the business model switch in the fall.

The Perfect Ten Stock fantasy enemies from lamest to coolest
One theory of MMOs is that they represent several parallel universes, each with similarities and differences. This may explain why so many of them claim to be boldly original and yet carry the same monster DNA that exists everywhere else.

Today we're going to carefully unpack our ancient collector's edition of stock fantasy enemies. Blow off the dust and smell that nostaglia, mhmm. Sure, they've seen better days, but they're still good, right? Still solid. Still capable of entertaining us, even if we've slaughtered their kin a thousand times over.

Let me show you my collection of 10 stock fantasy enemies that we encounter all the time in MMOs. Just for fun, I'm going to order them from lamest to coolest. I would be number 11, by the way.

Pangya Tomahawk players can win ingame rewards in Treasure Hunt event
Pirates are cropping up everywhere, even on golf courses. Players of the free-to-play golfing game Pangya Tomahawk have the opportunity to win rare in-game rewards like a pirate costume by participating in a special crossover event called Treasure Hunt. For a limited time, players can take part in this online board game that could net prizes such as rare costumes, premium golf clubs, and in-game currency.

Joan Kim, Pangya producer, stated that SG Interactive wanted to treat players to something a little different. The result? A board game powered by the golfing gameplay in Pangya. Players can earn chances for Treasure Hunt dice just by playing either nine or 18 rounds of golf on any of the game's courses, then use the dice rolls to move the caddy around the online game board. Every space on the board has a chance at winning in-game rewards, but there is also a chance of losing progress if defeated in the mini-games lurking on some spaces.

Check out the gallery below for a look at the prize outfits.

First things first. We apologize for twisting the Copernicus knife.

With that out of the way, did you know that 38 Studios' shuttered MMO was going to be the first mega-budget title to launch with a free-to-play model? We didn't either until Curt Schilling confessed as much to Boston Magazine.

"We were going to be the first AAA, hundred-million-dollar-plus, free-to-play, microtransaction-based MMO. That was one of our big secrets," Schilling said. "I think when we eventually showed off the game for the first time, the atom bomb was going to be free-to-play. When we announced that at the end, that was gonna be the thing that, I think, shocked the world."

The 2012 edition of GDC Online is filling out its schedule, and one of the more interesting dev panels is a "classic game postmortem" concerning Ultima Online. While the term postmortem is a bit of a misnomer since the game is still very much alive, the panel features an eclectic mix of dev personalities who helped shape both UO and the industry itself.

Original UO team members Starr Long, Rich Vogel, and Raph Koster will discuss how a "combination of insane ambition and idealistic cluelessness can sometimes result in creating something that changes people's lives and the course of an industry," according to the GDC website.

If you'll be in Austin, Texas, from October 9th through the 11th, stop by and learn a thing or two about MMOs and the folks who make them.

Diablo III reveals patch 104 class updates for Wizard, Monk and Barbarian
As the dust settled following Diablo III's tumultuous launch, players quickly figured out the most effective skills and items to use for each class. In the game's upcoming patch 1.0.4, underused skills and legendary items are receiving some big buffs, and several overpowered skills are due for a nerf. This week Blizzard revealed details of the legendary item revamp and some big balance updates for the Wizard, Monk, and Barbarian classes.

The popular Wizard Critical Mass build is due for a nerf, with Energy Twister's spell coefficient being cut in half. Venom Hydra has emerged as the most powerful variant, but rather than nerfing it, Blizzard will be buffing the alternative versions. Barbarians will be seeing a buff to fury-generating abilities Bash and Cleave and huge increases in the damage output of fury spenders. Finally, Monks will enjoy a huge damage boost to Wave of Light and Seven-Sided Strike, and all players will see improvements to make two-handed weapons more competitive.

[Ed: Look for an official Funcom statement regarding the anon tipster email at the end of the article.]

Scott Jennings ended a blog entry about The Secret World with a telling phrase this past week. "This is why we can't have nice things," he said. This was preceded by what can only be called a lament, as Jennings laid out how Funcom did something that most MMO developers are loath to do these days: It made an original game. And the reward for such was a dismal quarterly report and a round of layoffs.

That The Secret World attempts to break from the putrid post-World of Warcraft MMO mold is not up for debate. What is debatable is whether breaking from said mold can be profitable.

ArcheAge's fifth, yes fifth, closed beta test kicks off this week. XLGAMES recently released the latest patch notes, which have been helpfully translated from the original Korean via Google. ArcheAge Source has the full list, and perusing them brings a few interesting points to the fore.

For one, there seems to be a form of XP loss on death (though not for avatars below level 10). CBT5 also marks the introduction of the game's trial system, so all you naughty-by-nature folks will likely find out what sort of crime and punishment await you in XL's fantasy sandbox. Finally, there are bits about crop growth and how climate affects it as well as some verbiage about certain regional tradeskill specialties.

Massively's got a couple of folks patching up CBT5 as we speak, so look for some up-to-the-minute ArcheAge impressions in the coming weeks.

The Summoner's Guidebook Learning to help your jungler in League of Legends
I've been doing quite a bit of jungling lately in League of Legends. Jungling is hard, and one of the keys to being successful as a jungler is simply out of your hands: Your lanes need to play as if there were junglers in the game. I've played a jungler in countless games in which there was nothing to gank at all because my lanes played without regard for whether a jungler might come into lane.

I'm not a pro jungler. Out of all of LoL's myriad roles, jungling is my second weakest (after mid lane). Rather than give advice on something I'm really bad at, I'd rather talk about jungling from the lane perspective.

This week in The Summoner's Guidebook, we'll talk about the jungler's role and how you can help your jungler out. It isn't a simple matter, but I've been taking notes over the week about things that frustrated me and things that worked out for the best.
