MyBadOmen's Mass Effect 3 Case Mod Will Rock Your Intergalactic Socks

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 11:44 AM PDT

Usually, just tossing around the words "Mass Effect 3 mod" is enough to get you banned from Origin's multiplayer servers before you can blink a Batarian's eyes. Not in this case; rather than whipping together some modified code to gain XP at an advanced rate, David Lane (a.k.a. MyBadOmen) has instead whipped together a kick-ass ME3-inspired case mod that's sure to send a shiver down the robotic spines of Reapers galaxy-wide.

Lane based the ME3 mod around a NZXT Switch 810, and its craftsmanship earned him a shout out from company founder Johnny Hou in a blog post. A bevy of sponsors helped Lane build the Normandy SR2 homage from his fortress of solitude (aka an RV in the woods of New Hampshire), including Plextor, EK Waterblocks and NZXT itself.

The interior keeps up the red, white and black ME3 color scheme with a pair of Powercolor Radeon HD 6970s in Crossfire, red fans, and a red- and white-tinged Fatal1ty Professional Series mobo from ASRock. The liquid coursing through the cooling system is a nice red and white mix, too, while the exterior of the case is a mixture of hand-painting and di-noc carbon fiber sheets. There's even a little Normandy recreation on the liquid cooling reservoir.

Making this masterpiece took a lot of work. You can retrace David's steps in his epic 100 page-plus build log, which thankfully has an index for quickly jumping to specific updates. A few final touches should be posted soon. Like what you see? We've recently outlined all the tools you need to start modding yourself; David's ME3 build log shows you how to use them.

Windows 8 To Hit Store Shelves Late October, But Do People Care?

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 10:40 AM PDT

The mystery is over! Up until now, we'd had no idea when Windows 8 was actually going to launch, aside from the incredibly vague "second half of 2012." Does that mean now? Or the holiday season? Halloween, perhaps? Now we know: Windows 8 will be hitting store shelves in October.  However, that news breaks right as a report digs into the adoption rates of the various Windows 8 Previews and finds them far, far less used than their Windows 7 counterparts.

This morning, Microsoft CFO Tami Reller told a gathering of Microsoft Partners that the company is on track to see the gold version of Windows 8 released to manufacturing in about a month, during the first week of August. OEMs will than have a couple of months to lock in new hardware designs and load the OS onto PCs before the general launch takes places at the end of October, though no firm date was nailed down.

Will the public care when Windows 8 launches, however? PC World dug deeply into data from analytics firm NetApplications and found that in June, 0.18 percent of all PCs that visited the firm's network of websites were running some flavor of Windows 8. NetApplication's numbers show Windows 7's Previews had a 0.75 adoption rate at a similar point in its lifetime.

Comparing those percentages against the estimated total PC installed base puts things into even harder numbers, assuming you're fine with assuming that NetApplication's numbers are representative of the whole: Windows 8 Previews account for roughly 2.9 million PCs worldwide, while around 9.4 million systems were running Windows 7 Previews four months after the final beta launch.

Why do you think there's such a big discrepancy there? Do you think that's a testament more to the public's poor perception of Windows 8, or of Windows 7's rock-solid reputation? People couldn't wait to get away from Vista, after all, while Windows 7 is widely viewed as near nirvana for a traditional desktop UI. Or are people just not as likely to play around with release previews as they used to?

CyberPower Unveils Power Mega II Graphics Workstation Series Starting at $999

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 07:08 AM PDT

Boutique system builder CyberPower seemingly has a million and one system configurations to choose from on its website, and that number grows by three today with the introduction of its new 'Power Mega II' series of graphics workstations. All three baseline configurations -- Power Mega II 1000, 2000, and 3000 -- sport various degrees of Nvidia Quadro graphics hardware, though differ in which processor platform they're built around.

On the entry level side is the Power Mega II 1000 starting at $1,000. It's built around Intel's Ivy Bridge platform and ships with a Core i5 3570K processor, 8GB of DDR3-1600 RAM, Asus Z77 motherboard, Nvidia Quadro 600 graphics card, 1TB SATA hard drive, 24X DVD burner, and Corsair Carbide 300R case.

The Power Mega II 2000 starts at $2,225 and represents Intel's Sandy Bridge platform with a Core i7 3930K processor. It also features 16GB of DDR3 1600 RAM, a Gigabyte X79 motherboard, Nvidia Quadro 2000 graphics card, 120GB solid state drive, 2TB hard drive, 14X Blu-ray burner, and Corsair Obsidian 650D case.

Finally, the Power Mega II 3000 brings the most workstation DNA to the table with an Intel Xeon E5-2630 processor, Nvidia Quadro 4000 graphics card, 32GB DDR3-1333 ECC RAM, Asus X79 motherboard, two 120GB SSDs in RAID 0, 2TB hard drive, 14X Blu-ray writer, and Corsair Obsidian 800D case. Pricing starts at $3,535.

All three systems are customizable, though as configured, CyberPower pegs the Power Mega II 1000 as an optimal solution for digital photo and video editing, the Power Mega II 2000 for visual design and CAD work, and the Power Mega II 3000 for 3D artists.

Intel Pushes Ultrabook Makers to Adopt 3D Displays, HD Resolution

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 06:49 AM PDT

It's fairly easy to find capable Ultrabooks priced below Intel's recommended $1,000 ceiling, something that was a bit of a challenge when the form factor first emerged. Pricing has trended downwards for the past several months, but don't be surprised if some next generation Ultrabook models reverse that trend due to higher quality displays with touchscreen functionality and 3D support.

Touchscreen capabilities are a given, with Microsoft's Windows 8 right around the corner, but apparently Intel is also pushing for 3D displays. According to Digitimes, this is one of several suggestions Intel is making to Ultrabook makers in preparation for refreshed models built around the chip maker's upcoming Haswell platform in 2013.

Intel would also like to see tomorrow's Ultrabooks boast high definition screen resolutions. For the most part, Ultrabook makers have appeared hesitant to venture above 1366x768 up to this point, even though the hardware is is plenty capable of driving Full HD 1920x1080 displays.

Other ways in which Intel would like to see Ultrabooks evolve include better security measures, improved chassis design, longer battery life, and the return of solid state drives (SSDs) as a primary storage option.

Google Champions LGBT Rights in Homophobic Nations with 'Legalize Love' Campaign

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 06:28 AM PDT

Google's new "Legalize Love" campaign isn't about trying to legalize gay marriage, as has been erroneously reported across the Web over the weekend. Rather, Google's intent is to decriminalize homosexuality in countries where a particular sexual preference might be against the law, as well as to "eliminate homophobia around the world." Safer working conditions for Google employees is also a goal.

"We want our employees who are gay or lesbian or transgender to have the same experience outside the office as they do in the office," Google's Mark Palmer-Edgecumbe stated at the Global LGBT Workplace Summit in London today, according to Dot429.com. "It is obviously a very ambitious piece of work."

That same site appears to also be the source of confusion, stating incorrectly that Google's intention is to "legalize marriage for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people around the world." Google dismissed that notion, telling The Washington Post that it's goal is to "promote safer conditions for gay and lesbian people inside and outside the office in countries with anti-gay laws on the books," a sentiment that's echoed on Google's Legalize Love website.

Google has been supporting gay rights for some time now, dating back to at least 2008 when company co-founder Sergey Brin posted a statement in opposition to California's Prop 9 ban on same-sex marriage.

"Google has a long history of support for Pride Celebrations around the world. In 2011, over one thousand Googlers participated in Pride celebrations in a dozen cities to support equality," the sultan of search points out. "To date in 2012, 1,500+ Googlers have marched in Pride Celebrations, including Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, Tel Aviv and Warsaw."

U.K. Judge Sides with Samsung in Apple Patent Dispute

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 05:50 AM PDT

Samsung hasn't had much to celebrate lately in the legal arena, and the fact that a U.K. judge deemed the company's Galaxy Tab "not as cool" as Apple's iPad seems like it would only rub salt in the wound. However, it's for that very reason that Judge Colin Birss sided with Samsung, ruling that Apple's patent infringement claim, which has been successful in the U.S., is bogus.

According to a Bloomberg report, the judge ruled that Galaxy tablets "do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool." In other words, nobody's going to mistake a Galaxy Tab for an iPad based on the look and feel, as Apple has argued in court, because Samsung's tablet looks and feels like an inferior device.

Samsung's okay with that assessment so long as it keeps translating into legal victories.

"Should Apple continue to make excessive legal claims in other countries based on such generic designs, innovation in the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited," Samsung said in an email to Bloomberg.

Apple has three weeks to appeal the decision, and considering the company's successful track record when appealing a verdict, Samsung would be wise to prepare for another legal bout.

The Rebirth of Consoles: The Age of F2P

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 02:49 PM PDT

By. M. Hauschel

"Consoles, I believe, are dead," said Firefall developer and former World of Warcraft lead, Mark Kern, CEO of Red 5 Studios. Kern is certain F2P titles are the future of gaming and will replace the current business model. Are consoles dead? Not yet, but in order for consoles to complete with F2P titles, that have been available on PCs for years, they will need to create their own titles without the price tag. It's no surprise that is the direction many console-based developers are heading towards.

Ubisoft, in a post financials conference call, suggests that plans for next-gen development are well on their way. Seven titles are planned for Wii U, and the company also noted that full game digital downloads and F2P titles will be the central focus of the next generation.

The quiet unveiling of Xbox 360's first F2P title at E3 gives more precedence to the F2P titles heading towards consoles. Ascend: New Gods, from Toy Soldiers developer Signal Studios, is developing a thirdperson, fantasy action-RPG due in 2013. It has promised persistent asynchronous multiplayer across Xbox 360 and Windows Phone.

Ascend New Gods 590x341Screenshot of Ascend: New Gods

The leader of the pack by miles is Playstation. PS3 with their upcoming title Defiance will be the world's first persistent online world shooter. Instead of a co-op with 4-8 players, Defiance supports thousands of players in a never-ending battle. Not only is Defiance a game, but also it will have a TV series on the Syfy. The game and show work together, as they change and evolve creating a unique gaming and viewing experience.

Fans of Eve Online can look forward to CCP Games' upcoming MMOFPS F2P title for the PS3, Dust 514. This will be the company's first F2P title and first console title. Taking place in the same universe as Eve Online, players will combat on the various planets found in Eve Online. Each planet will feature a unique map each divided into large districts. Players must fight to control districts that hold resources and installations.

While console publishers have been slow to the game of F2P, developing studios have been pushing the boundaries. Crytek is turning itself into a F2P only studio. Not only will all future games be F2P, but they will also be triple-A games, with estimated development budgets of $10 million to $30 million. After completing its current contracts for traditional boxed products, such as Crysis 3, Homefront 2 and Ryse, all Crytek games will be free to play, CEO Cevat Yerli told.

“I think this is a new breed of games that has to happen to change the landscape, and be the most user-friendly business model.” Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. "We see the future of consoles as free-to-play – ideally focused on free-to-play. That’s what I want to see in the future. But unfortunately not everybody shares this vision due to many other reasons."

Gaming giant, EA, has embraced the market change to F2P as well.

“I think there’s an inevitability that happens five years from now, 10 years from now, that, let’s call it the client, to use the term, [is free.] It is no different than… it’s free to me to walk into The Gap in my local shopping mall. They don’t charge me to walk in there. I can walk into The Gap, enjoy the music, look at the jeans and what have you, but if I want to buy something I have to pay for it.”-Peter Moore, COO of Electronic Arts

E3 DUST514 06 1024x576Dust514, a new F2P PS3 FPS by the developers of Eve Online

While the criticism of cash shop systems and DLCs will be a constant debated issue among gamers. It will really boil down to how each company will handle their system. Yerli had a few words for premium services and DLC, and really shines hope on the future of cash shops.

“If you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it’s literally milking the customers to death,” Yerli said.

With development studios focusing on F2P titles and publishers giving credence to the F2P business model, this a new era of gaming, and it will be exciting to see how it plays out.

"We have a lot of great features planned, and we will be integrating the service more with the game and also, hopefully, with mobile devices and social networks in the future. We are going to add more stats, more features, more leaderboards, and more user control. We might also look at giving rewards tied to your status and standing on Chronicle."

GW2: Invasion of the tiny, snarky geniuses
We know Guild Wars 2's release date. We know when the last beta weekend will take place. Now, the last great mystery has been answered. A blog post scheduled to go live later this morning (link coming soon) details the changes that ArenaNet has in store for the beta schedule for July 20th to 22nd. Spoiler alert: The Sylvari and Asura will be playable!

Previous beta weekends gave players access to the home cities and two explorable zones apiece for the Humans, Charr, and Norn, as well Lion's Arch and Gendarran Fields. In the upcoming beta, the last two playable races will also be open for exploration. Like the other races, Sylvari and Asura characters will see personal story content up to level 20 and access to their respective capital cities, the Grove and Rata Sum. In addition, a new Guild-Conquest PvP map will be available for playtesting.

If you've always wondered what sort of city snarky magitech geniuses would build or have been waiting for ever to play as a humanoid plant, your time is now.

[Edit to add: ArenaNet's blog post has been published.]

Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to NA and EU early next year
Looking forward to getting your grubby mitts on some hot Phantasy Star Online 2 action? Those in the west may have to be patient, but there's now a finish line in sight: Sega announced that PSO2 will hit North America and Europe in early 2013.

According to the PR, producer Satoshi Sakai says that the wait will be worth it: "The number one thing we want to provide players in Phantasy Star Online 2 is an adventure that changes every time they log in. Just as great table-top RPG experiences revolve around imaginative and unexpected encounters, we want players to consistently be surprised as they explore dungeons and undertake quests."

Phantasy Star Online 2 launched in Japan this past week.

[Thanks to Tom for the tip!]

The Daily Grind: Should MMOs have something for everyone?

      Posted: 09 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

It's weird what a creepy picture fishing lures make.
Triple-A MMOs in the days of yore always seemed to have one goal: to be everything to everyone, to provide a little something for every imaginable player and rope in as many people from as many gaming styles as possible. Even if a game wasn't explicitly a sandbox, it still tossed in crafting, dungeoning, exploration, PvP, or zones that blatantly pandered to players of different nationalities.

Nowadays we have a lot more choices, and modern games seem more willing to embrace niche design. Star Wars: The Old Republic is story, story, story. The Secret World focuses heavily on puzzle gameplay. Outside of AAA titles, the shift is even more brazen: Glitch eschews combat in favor of economy, while Darkfall features open PvP as the centerpiece of its world. It's not that these games have nothing else; it's only that they do one particular thing really well and aren't necessarily trying to hide it. They wouldn't turn down players with opposing playstyles, but they're not exactly working overtime to lure them in, either.

So what do you think? Should MMOs keep aspiring to provide something for everyone, or should they just try to do one thing well?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

      Guild Wars 2
Just when the wait seems unbearable, something comes along to offer a bit of respite. Although fans eager for Guild Wars 2 still have almost two months to wait to dive into the actual game, they can immerse themselves in the world via music sooner that that; the official GW2 soundtrack is now available for purchase from DirectSong.com for $29.99. Offering even more music than the "best of" soundtrack CD in the collector's edition, this four-disk deluxe set is filled with previously unreleased music. Unfortunately for the digitally minded, there is no download available.

While supplies last, each copy ordered will be personally autographed by composer Jeremy Soule, who also did all of the music in the original game. The set will ship within four weeks from the date of purchase, giving quick fans a couple weeks of musical sustenance while waiting for launch.

      The Secret World
At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post.

So there's this new game in town called The Secret World -- maybe you've heard of it? This week, while you've been busily solving puzzles in the game, we've been following the news, covering Funcom's CEO's resignation from TSW, the game's early patches, developers' claims that the title's combat is "radically different," and concern over the company's business model and falling stock values.

We also debuted our brand-new The Secret World column, posted a roundup of our launch coverage, and published a detailed guide to the game's skill system.

It's hopefully no secret that the rest of this week's top MMO stories are hidden behind the break.

EVE Evolved: Four things MMOs can learn from EVE

        EVE Evolved title image
New MMOs are released every year, and we often see them repeating the same mistakes as previous games or releasing without tried-and-tested mechanics. It just seems like common sense to learn from the years of mistakes and successes of other companies and previous titles, but it isn't always clear how to apply game mechanics or lessons from dissimilar types of game. EVE Online is as dissimilar from the typical MMO as you can get, but there are lessons to be learned from its turbulent nine-year history that can be applied to all MMO development.

EVE has helped prove that you can start small and grow rather than raking in huge launch sales and then fading away. The past year has also shown conclusively that iteration on existing features can trump big expansions. EVE's market system and single-shard server have both been commended countless times over the game's nine-year history, and yet in all that time, few games have tried to replicate those features.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at four lessons learned from EVE Online that could easily be applied to other MMOs.

TERA guild farms itself for political gain, playerbase outraged

          TERA - Vanarchs behaving badly
So there's a bit of an uproar ongoing in the lands of Arborea at the moment. No, it has nothing to do with skimpy armor, Elin, or whether or not "action" combat is in fact new to MMOs.

TERA's endgame political system features something called a Vanarch, which is basically a player-elected representative. Vanarchs can impose taxes, toggle PvP on or off, and generally meddle in the affairs of other players in ways that are strictly off-limits in most themepark MMOs.

En Masse recently adjusted the system to allow Vanarchs to rise to power through guild-vs.-guild combat. In doing so, it cleared the way for mega-guilds to split in two and farm their way to political office. As you might expect, players on the outside of said guilds are none too happy about it and are allegedly receiving conflicting information from the support staff as to whether or not taking advantage of this game mechanic is considered an exploit. We'll keep you updated in case the company takes a more official position on the matter, but for now, you can head to the official forums for all the fallout.

[Thanks to everyone who tipped us!]

          The Secret World
Most MMOs aren't trying to actively spook their players (unless the sight of sparkle ponies creeps you out), but The Secret World is an exception to that rule. In honor of TSW's launch week, today's One Shots is all about Funcom's new adventure-slash-puzzler MMO. Massively reader Drinkfist has gotten into the spirit of the game with today's featured screenshot. He writes in,
The Secret World just started, and the game looks amazing! This is a picture of the haunted forest in Blue Mountain. The Ghosts that inhabit it are especially rough as every 30 seconds they phase in and out of this world, changing their resistances.
Brace yourself for this and a few more TSW pics after the cut!
