World IPv6 Launch Gives Crowded Internet Much Needed Breathing Room

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 08:58 AM PDT

If you're reading this, you must be online, and if you're online, let us say 'Welcome to a larger Internet.' Today kicks off the World IPv6 Launch event organized by the Internet Society and intended to bring major internet service providers (ISPs), home networking equipment manufacturers, and web companies around the world together to enable and embrace the IPv6 protocol for their products and services.

Count Google among them. As the sultan of search points out, few could have imagined that the Internet today would serve nearly 2.5 billion people and 11 billion devices when it was launched operationally back in 1983. But that's what happened, and suddenly the Internet is running out of addresses.

As constructed, there's room for around 4.3 billion addresses. Internet Protocol version 6 expands that number exponentially, to "about 340 trillion, trillion, trillion!," Google says.

"Today's World IPv6 Launch, coordinated by the Internet Society, marks the day that participating websites, Internet Service Providers (ISP), and network hardware manufacturers switch on IPv6 permanently in parallel with IPv4," Google said in a blog post. "We're proud to be one of the founding participants; virtually all Google's services have been available over IPv6 for a while, but IPv6 access was only available to networks participating in the 'Google over IPv6' program. From now on, they will be made available to any IPv6 network on the Internet (well, almost any).

IPv6 still has a ways to go in terms of widespread adoption. Most ISPs haven't embraced the new standard yet, and the same is true for many websites. Not all home network equipment supports IPv6 either, though some can be upgraded with a relatively simple firmware updates. Others will need to be replaced entirely.

Are you ready? If you want to test your setup and infrastructure, head here.

Mozilla Firefox 13 Hits Release Channel, Brings New Homepage and Tabs

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 08:33 AM PDT

The latest and greatest version of Mozilla's Firefox web browser -- Firefox 13 -- doesn't alter the browser scene with earth shaking innovation or groundbreaking feature additions, nor have we come to expect such gargantuan leaps in browser development since Mozilla swithced to a rapid release schedule. That said, there is a new version of Firefox on the Release channel, and here's what it brings to the table.

First and foremost, Firefox's new default homepage offers quicker access to bookmarks, history, settings, and more. The other notable change has to do with tabs. When opening a new tab, Firefox presents users with their most visited pages.

Other than those two additions, Mozilla mainly just sprinkled in a few changes to how the browser behaves and resolved a bunch of bugs, as it usually does with each new Firefox release. Restored background tabs are no longer loaded by default, a move intended to speed up the startup process, and smooth scrolling is now enabled by default. On the developer side, Mozilla said it made 72 total improvements to Page Inspector, HTML panel, Style Inspector, Scratchpad, and Style Editor.

The complete list of changes is here, and you can download the latest Firefox release here.

Corsair Announces Flagship Neutron Series Solid State Drives

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 08:13 AM PDT

Jimmy Neutron, boy genius, would approve of Corsair's model name for its newest and best performing solid state drive (SSD) series to date. Corsair's new Neutron GTX branded SSDs are supposedly the first consumer drives in the industry to sport the LM87800 6Gbps SSD controller for Link_A_Media devices (LAMD), a company that develops system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for enterprise and mobile storage markets.

Neutron GTX SSDs are available in 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB capacities, each of which uses toggle NAND flash memory rated to deliver up to 90,000 random read and write IOPS. Sequential read and write performance are rated at up to 555MB/s and 500MB/s, respectively.

There's also a toned version of the Neutron family that drops the GTX moniker. These drives are available in 120GB and 240GB capacities, offer up to 90,000 random read IOPs and 85,000 random write IOPS, and deliver read/write performance of up to 555MB/370MB per second.

"All Neutron Series models incorporate LAMD's powerful on-the-fly error correction and advanced NAND management technologies which improve the endurance of onboard flash memory, giving the SSD's enhanced reliability and durability," Corsair says. "The Neutron Series GTX drives also include adaptive DSP technology which maintains superior performance throughout the lifetime of the SSD. Neutron Series and Neutron Series GTX models are backed with a 5 year warranty."

Corsair says it will announce pricing upon product release, which is currently scheduled for July.

Following Delay, HTC One X Available at AT&T Online, In Stores June 10

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 07:52 AM PDT

A delay at U.S. Customs over a patent dispute (what else?) with Apple caused the HTC One X to arrive in the States a little later than HTC would have liked, but it's here now, and available to purchase on AT&T's website for $200 with a 2-year voice agreement and qualifying monthly data plan. Brick-and-mortar goers will be able to snag the One X starting on June 10, 2012 (this coming Sunday).

Sans contract, the One X sells for $550. Either way, it's available in gray or white and sports a 4.7-inch HD touchscreen, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 8MP rear-facing camera with dual-LED flash and 1080p video capture, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 4G radio, and non-removable 1800 mAh battery good for up to 8.5 hours of talk time and 12.6 days on standby. The operating system is Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

AT&T and HTC are putting considerable effort into hyping the One X device's built in camera with back illuminated sensor, f2.0 28mm lens, and burst photography mode. Another standout feature is the inclusion of Beats by Dr. Dre audio.

LinkedIn: We're Investigating Reports of Stolen Passwords, Stay Tuned

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 07:34 AM PDT

If you're a LinkedIn user, you may want to consider changing up your password today, as well as those of any other accounts that share the same login credentials. While nothing has yet been confirmed, LinkedIn said it's currently "looking into reports of stolen passwords," reports of which are flowing through Twitter and other areas of the Internet, as well as on a Russian forum where one member claims he uploaded 6,458,020 hashed passwords.

"Stay tuned for more," LinkedIn tweeted this morning.

There's some chatter that this could all be a hoax, but security professional and passwords expert Per Thorsheim isn't buying it. According to Thorsheim, many people have already confirmed that their passwords appear in the text dump, which is currently in the process of being decrypted. And according to one report, some 300,000 passwords have already been extracted.

Our advice? Err on the side of caution and pick a new password (make sure it isn't one of these), and then change it again once LinkedIn sorts everything out.

Windows RT Laptops Powered by Snapdragon S4 Processors Currently in Production

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 07:10 AM PDT

Qualcomm on Tuesday unveiled an expanded portfolio for its Snapdragon S4 CPU family, breaking the processors down into four categories of concentration, including S4 Prime (HDTVs and set-top boxes), S4 Pro (Windows RT devices), S4 Plus (smartphones and tablets), and S4 Play (entry level mobile devices). Focusing on the S4 Pro series for a moment, reportedly there are Snapdragon S4-powered laptops running Windows RT already in production.

That bit of information comes from The Verge, which heard it straight from the horse's mouth -- the horse, in this case, being Rob Chandhok, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm. Chandhok told The Verge that Windows RT notebooks with S4 hardware inside are being built as Computex goes on.

Qualcomm already has experience working with Microsoft, being the only chip maker serving Windows 7 and 7.5 devices.

"We are using that partnership now to actually bring the Snapdragon processor family into the Windows RT launch that Microsoft will be doing in the future," Chandhok said at Computex, according to TomsHardware.

Not counting upcoming notebooks, Snapdragon is installed in over 370 device models representing around 70 manufacturers.

Napster Founders Create Airtime, a G-Rated Version of Chatroulette for Facebook

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 06:44 AM PDT

Could you imagine trying to pitch Chatroulette integration in Facebook to Mark Zuckerberg? It wouldn't fly, not when the billionaire 28-year-old is trying to open up access to his social playground for kids under the age of 13. But a clean version of Chatroulette? That's Airtime, a new live social video network put together by Napster founders Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning.

Unveiled at a special launch event in New York City with Jimmy Fallon, Jim Carrey, Ed Helms, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Joel McHale, Olivia Munn, and Snoop Dogg providing the requisite star power, Airtime is a browser-based video chat service friends can use via their Facebook networks. Users are able to share live experiences and collaborate on project, and is purportedly "fun and safe."

"There's something exciting about bringing spontaneity to the Internet," said Parker. "All of your interactions online are constrained by the people you already know. That wasn't always the case. If it weren't for the internet, Fanning and I would have never become friends. As we move from a social graph to an interest graph, there are great possibilities for our world. That's what we're trying to tap into with Airtime."

Added Fanning, "We look at Airtime as if it were a smart and engaging host. "Airtime is a service that does everything it can to help you find the people that you should know, and then guide your conversations further. These are connections that wouldn't be possible in the real world. If you look at this from an idealistic standpoint, Airtime is something only technology can facilitate. And it is finally possible with the ubiquity of webcams, broadband connections and a highly developed identity layer. We've only scratched the surface with what the Internet can do today."

In addition to chatting with your friends, Airtime will pair you up with people who live nearby, have similar interests, and with friends of friends. But unlike Chatroulette, Airtime plugs into your Facebook chat network and knows your identity, and while it can't stop unwanted nude encounters, it can drop the ban hammer in a hurry.

Intrigued? If so, you can give it a test drive here.

Nintendo Talks Wii U Launch Titles, Gamepad Controls

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 06:20 AM PDT

It was a well known fact that Nintendo would use the E3 convention to showcase its upcoming Wii U console, and it did exactly that, wasting no time introducing a "massive lineup" of third-party games, including new games in the Super Mario Bros., Pikmin, Wii Fit, Batman: Arkham City, Scribblenauts, Assassin's Creed, and Just Dance franchises. It wasn't just about the games, however.

Nintendo covered a variety of topics, including the much-hyped touch-sensitive gamepad that has come to define the Wii U.

"The GamePad doesn't just introduce a new type of game play, it redefines an entire dynamic. With asymmetric game play, multiple experiences are possible in the same game at the same time. That's transformative," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "While games are the focus of this year's E3, the Wii U story also includes the enhanced social connections and integrated entertainment experiences created by the GamePad. We're providing a glimpse of that with the introduction of Miiverse and by revealing partnerships with some of the biggest content providers on the planet."

In addition to touch-screen and motion controls, the Wii U gamepad will include dual analog stick controls and can be used as a remote control for TVs, even when the console is powered down.

On the social side, Nintendo is creating something it calls Miiverse, essentially an online hub for gamers to chit-chat about games and discover new content.

"From here they can challenge their friends to play together, ask a question about a difficult level or discover new elements of their favorite games they never knew existed," Nintendo said in a statement. "After a notable achievement or other share-worthy moment, players can pause their game or application and seamlessly post messages to the Miiverse community."

The Wii U is scheduled to launch sometime this holiday season.

Gaikai to Power Cloud Gaming Service on Samsung Smart TVs

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 04:22 AM PDT

Hitherto, OnLive has been widely viewed as the cloud gaming industry's poster child,  but don't be surprised if it eventually ends up getting overshadowed by its lesser known rival Gaikai. This is because the latter is joining forces with the world's largest television manufacturer.

Samsung is bringing cloud gaming to its Smart TVs. Called Samsung Cloud Gaming, the service will be powered by Gaikai's game streaming technology. According to a joint press release issued by the two companies Tuesday, their partnership will make it possible to stream demos and entire games directly from the Samsung Smart Hub environment in Samsung's 7000 series and up 2012 LED Smart TVs. The Gaikai-powered service will soon be open to Samsung Smart TV-owning beta testers in the States.

"Our vision is to provide the same access to video games that consumers enjoy with TV shows, movies and music. Our research made Samsung the obvious partner to turn this vision into a reality," said David Perry, CEO of Gaikai Inc. "Samsung is the largest TV manufacturer in the world and Gaikai is the industry-recognized fastest cloud-based streaming service for video games. Together, we will turn Samsung Smart TVs into a console-like experience capable of delivering the best-selling video games and other content instantly to consumers – no downloads, no extra hardware, no trips to the store."

This is not the first deal of its kind for Gaikai, though. Earlier this year, the game streaming company announced a similar partnership with LG as well.

E3 2012: OnRPG/MMOHut Day One Recap

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 01:46 PM PDT

Written by Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG Editor-in-Chief

Day one started off with the usual fair at E3 this year. Advertisements everywhere, music everywhere, and of course bikini girls everywhere. Ah the life of a game reporter.

I paired up with our new cameraman Ivan and Michael “Spunkify” Dunaway of MMOHut and hit up the Trion Worlds booth to get a fresh look at End of Nations. This game first blew me away with its concept back in 2010. However when I saw the early test builds of the game through 2011 I had lost some of my interest. Well thankfully the polish has been added and we might easily have one a new contender for team esports once this game launches.

The commander leveling system, the balanced cash shop, and the ability to pre-assign companies and switch them out on the fly as the situation changes were among just a few of the features that impressed me this convention. The graphics also seem to look sharper with more refined particles than ever before. They said CB testing will be starting in weeks, not months, so brace yourself for the next world war!

Perfect World took up most of our spare time on the first day. RaiderZ was looking stellar as always and we got to see some of the more fluff features this time around like setting up cooking tables, preparing meals, and other pieces and hints of the crafting system. Mark Hill was on the scene to give us a demo of it all so expect a video on that. Meanwhile Spunkify hit up the Neverwinter team for an interview. I wasn’t apart of it but Ivan assured me the sorcerer/wizard class was a blast to play and he wants to get his hands on the game asap.

We managed to snag an impromptu meeting with Sony Online Entertainment to check out Planetside 2. Spunkify joked around with the team and shot a long and detailed interview with gameplay that you won’t want to miss!

A theme of this convention seems to be mobile MMOs and both WeMade Entertainment and Spacetime Studios have big plans for this new sector of the MMO market. Spacetime Studios was proud to show off their more chibi LOTRO styled PC/Mobile title Arcane Legends. This felt like Pocket Legends but built up with the improvements from each of their titles so far. I was especially fond of the Dark Legends styled control scheme.

WeMade on the other hand has around 20 titles slated for 2013 that will be strictly mobile MMOs. These ranged from Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon styled titles to side scrolling beat-em-ups to even an straight out 1 on 1 fighting game with RPG elements. If you don’t have a mobile device you best start saving up now because by 2013 some of the top titles might be mobile only!

I finished up day 1 with my long awaited visit to Snail Games USA to check out Age of Wushu in person for the first time. Turns out I’m not the only one incredibly excited for this title as even Jet Lee signed a 2 year contract endorsing the title. In an upcoming interview I question everything about the game from school/guild interaction to skills building to dungeons to town dynamics to professions… well you get the idea! Needless to say if you like titles like Scarlet Legacy and Perfect World but want a more dynamic combat system and more natural character progression (with no levels!) then Age of Wushu is one to keep an eye on.

Well I’m in the middle of day 2 now so I have to run to meet Wargaming about World of Warplanes. Looking forward to providing another update tomorrow.

Steam offers Lord of the Rings Online starter pack
Is it one digital distribution service to rule them all? Starting today, Lord of the Rings Online is now available to download from Steam. To add incentive for using the service, Steam is offering a special starter pack for players looking to step foot into the game for the first time -- or free-to-play vets eager for a good deal.

The LotRO Steam starter pack
will outfit an adventurer with an exclusive mount, an XP-boost token that delivers 25% extra XP on monster kills up until level 65, and 1,000 Turbine Points to spend in the game's store. The deal also includes three zone quest packs -- North Downs, Evendim, and Misty Mountains -- which covers levels 21-50.

Currently the starter pack is 50% off at $14.99, which makes the combined offerings a good deal if you lack the quest packs and want to shore up your leveling experience.

E3 2012: Crashing and burning in PlanetSide 2

E3 2012 Crashing and burning in PlanetSide 2
I used to think of myself as an OK pilot. Then I slid into the cockpit of a Terran Republic Mosquito at E3 yesterday and learned just how inapplicable real-world skill is in PlanetSide 2. In my defense, Sony Online Entertainment's demo stations suffered from a severe lack of joysticks, and the controls were also mapped to that goofy up-is-up and down-is-down standard that's, well, standard on every shooter ever made.

This is completely unnatural to my way of thinking, and so I'm going to blame it for the fact that my Mosquito lumbered around the skies of Auraxis like a drunken elephant, listing hard to starboard and eventually porpoising down for the ugliest landing in the history of ugly landings.

But hey, any one you walk away from's a good one, amirite?

Enter at Your Own Rift: Why update 1.9 could be the best one yet

Enter at your own Rift Why Update 19 could be the best one yet
In the most recent Enter at Your Own Rift, we looked at Conquest, an exciting new opportunity for instanced three-faction PvP. It's been generating a lot of buzz, and players have had two chances to check it out its development on the test server. Conquest is scheduled to be part of RIFT's Update 1.9, which is probably just around the corner if past update schedules are any indication.

But that's not all that's planned for the next game update, and there are two additions that I think could very well be gamechangers for RIFT. The first is a mentoring system, and the second is the addition of lower-level instant adventures. In this week's column, we'll look at both through last week's test event and explore why they could make update 1.9 the best one yet.

Play Diablo 1 with World of Warcraft models in StarCraft 2
The StarCraft II Arcade feature, a tool intended to help the community highlight quality custom maps and game modes created with the StarCraft modding tools, has recently gone into beta. Coinciding with that beta, Blizzard has launched a contest that requires you to play, rate, and review an Arcade game for a chance to win a Heart of the Swarm beta key.

One of the delightful custom game modes that has become an Arcade chart-topper is an incestuous mix of all of Blizzard's major franchises: It's the first Diablo game ported into StarCraft II using World of Warcraft art assets for the 3D models. The gameplay doesn't match the original Diablo click-for-click, but the core mechanics and all of the sound files have been carried from one game to the next, including Deckard Cain's signature stay awhile and listen.

StarCraft II shoutcaster Husky recently featured the game mode on his YouTube channel, and you can watch his 18+ minute preview/review embedded below.

E3 2012 Spacetime Studios demos another smash Legends hit
If you're a fan of Spacetime Studios' mobile MMO Pocket Legends or any of its brethren, you're in for a treat. The studio's next installment in the series, Arcane Legends, promises to deliver more of what all gamers crave: a standard hack-n-slash dungeon crawler feel, with more weapons, more environments, more lore, and more of just plain ol' fun. For free.

Players who haven't experienced any of the Legend series will find it familiar, yet entertaining. Spacetime flagships that their company is entirely dedicated to gaming software on all platforms. Pocket Legends was their first foray into the market, and thus was born Star Legends and Dark Legends, each with its own style and flair. Arcane Legends delivers more of what the previous titles offer.

I was able to sit down with Fernando Blanco, Director of Marketing, at E3 to see a demo for the game, which they showcased on two tablets -- including a Kindle Fire. It was quite impressive.

Trion Worlds CEO pinpoints the failings of 38 Studios and Star Wars: The Old Republic

Trion's CEO dissects 38 Studios and SWTOR's failings
Trion Worlds' CEO Lars Buttler has never been one to pussyfoot around his competition, and at E3 Buttler bluntly addressed what he saw as the failings of both 38 Studios and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Buttler talked about these games in light of the perceived crumbling of the AAA MMO segment. Citing different issues between the two companies and projects, he said that "process management" was 38 Studios Achilles' Heel: "38 Studios had a concept they couldn't deliver on... It was too big of a scope. It was too much. It just went broader and never narrowed. They never even came close to the finish line."

In the case of SWTOR, Buttler sees BioWare fumbling where Trion's RIFT has stayed consistently strong: "I don't think [SWTOR's] business model was necessarily the issue, but I think it was content updates, and what to do in the game, and how you can play it without it becoming repetitive."

So what is the key to success for an MMO? "You have to be able to keep people interested," Buttler concluded. "The key about an online game is that it's a live service. If you make it more like a packaged goods game, people will stay about as long as they stay with a packaged goods game."

The first video offers lore of the Vellosk peaks, sharing how area has fallen to shadow and one barbarian clan caught the attention of powerful warlords. The second clip is part two of the three-part "The Siege of Neverwinter" trailer series; where part one was truly a tease at under three-quarters or a minute, this next part shows more action, following a story of vengeance amid battle scenes.

Check out both clips after the break.

The Daily Grind: Do you leave cloaks and hats toggled on or off?

The Daily Grind Do you leave cloaks and hats toggled on or off
I might just be thinking this because I recently watched Zoolander, but style is so very important to us gamers. We don't just want to kick butt; we want to kick butt and look incredible while we do it. And in my experience, style can be made and shattered depending on the accessories.

Hats and cloaks are two visual options that many MMOs allow us to toggle on and off. Some folks like 'em; some detest them. For me, I almost never like cloaks (they hide the rest of the body and armor), and I'll wear a hat only if it completes an ensemble or doesn't fully cover up the hair.

But that's just me, and I want to hear about you. Do you toggle your hats and cloaks on or off, and why? This is what we'll discuss over breakfast scones. Pass the jam, please.

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Gambitious launching itself as a game-focused crowdsourcing center

It's like being a very tiny venture capitalist. Complete with tiny monocle.
Crowdsourcing is becoming the new trend, with Kickstarter projects serving as the new hotness for getting a game start-up funded. So it's not hard to understand why Gambitious is promoting itself as an alternative to Kickstarter, specifically as a means to fund game development via crowdsourced projects. Gambitious has more to it than just the idea being a game-focused alternative to the Kickstarter giant, however; it includes an option for investors and backers to take part in equity funding.

Traditionally, Kickstarter backers receive only a few bonuses for funding a project, and if that project goes on to wild success after the initial funding, the backers are left out. Equity funding allows people to play a more traditional venture capitalist role, investing money in return for dividends on successful projects. While this option is available only in Europe at the moment due to legal issues, it's a new take on funding a game, and depending on future developments, Gambitious might make a name for itself in the indie gaming market.

E3 2012: Razer reveals concept controller for MechWarrior Online

It's like Steel Battalion, but affordable instead of ridiculous.
Atmosphere is important in a game. Sure, when you get behind the cockpit of a 'Mech in MechWarrior Online, you can control everything just fine with a mouse and a keyboard, but that doesn't feel quite right. No, you should have something that feels appropriately like a set of controls for an enormous walking battle tank. Something like the Razer Artemis, in other words. The peripheral manufacturer has just unveiled its concept controller specifically targeting the upcoming game, and like most Razer concepts, it certainly looks right on the money.

The demo unit on the show floor is unfortunately non-functional, as it's meant as a proof-of-concept rather than a retail product. Currently the team is looking at the best ways to implement the functionality needed, with the final product in flux as feedback is taken into consideration. If it sparks your imagination, however, you can certainly take a look at the trailer for the upcoming controller just after the break.

The Game Archaeologist The Anarchy Online bloggers
It's a simple fact of life: Newer MMOs get all the blog love. World of Warcraft and EVE Online, in particular, are lavished with so many dedicated blogs that it's almost embarrassing, while most of the games that we look at in this column are practically ignored. It could just be that blogging didn't really come into vogue when these games came out, but whatever the reason, it's kind of a shame that few if any folks are out there blogging about their in-game experiences in Ultima Online or Asheron's Call.

That's why I was utterly surprised to see two brand-new bloggers hit the scene writing about Anarchy Online: Sephora's Closet and Donovan Drones. Both of these blogs came out of a community-wide effort to encourage new game writers in May, and I was so fascinated with their game du jour that I contacted each of them for an interview.

What would drive someone to blog about Anarchy Online in 2012? What is there in the game worth writing? How many more words do I need to write until this paragraph doesn't look pathetically skimpy? Come with me and we'll find out!

There's no doubt that the folks over at ArenaNet have been busy with preparations for the upcoming Guild Wars 2 beta weekend event. The team has doubled the number of servers available for the beta and instituted a number of changes to the beta content itself, as detailed in a recent blog post. E3 2012 CCP 'We want EVE to be around in 10, 20, 30 years'
CCP's E3 2012 setup was dark, infused with Jon Hallur's soothing sci-fi synth tones, and entirely appropriate for huddling conspiratorially in a corner booth with producer Jon Lander and creative director Torfi Frans Olafsson.

The three of us chatted for about 30 minutes, covering a wide range of topics including EVE Online and its new Inferno expansion, DUST 514, and game money for real goods.

In a nutshell, Inferno has been more of what the doctor ordered for the MMO genre's elder sandbox statesman. "We are on the cusp of breaking our all-time subscriber record right now," Olafsson told me, and that's no small feat for a polarizing title in a genre over which burnout and next-new-thing syndrome reign supreme.

Fallen Earth receives a State of the Game update

Why are there always growly people in bars after the end of the world?
For Fallen Earth players, May was all about the Global Territory Control update. But now it's June, and the game's developers have been rather quiet since then. The team is rectifying that in the newest State of the Game letter, letting fans know that it's just been a quiet month of balancing and addressing bugs from the patch. Now that those issues are addressed, the team can look toward the future again.

Among the promised future additions are farms, meant to be the PvE equivalent of harvesters. The team wants to ensure that harvesters are providing enough of a reward for player effort to be worthwhile, so some more balancing is necessary, but the core idea is that the higher-risk actions of harvesters yield greater rewards than farms. There's also a promise of the development team trying to be more active with responses to players, something that should be a welcome start after a fairly quiet month.

Hyperspace Beacon: On group finder and server transfers
Update 1.3 for Star Wars: The Old Republic is nearly upon us. Developers at BioWare hope that this update gives players a better sense of community. In other words, some server populations are really low, and it sucks to play on them. Update 1.3 hopes to diminish that feeling of loneliness with the two biggest features in 1.3: the group finder and server transfers.

Game launches vary in scale and scope. SWTOR's launch was huge! Over two million copies of the game were sold, and over 150 servers spun up the first week. That made some of features you'd find in older MMOs redundant. Group finders and server transfers are really not necessary when you have everything that you need at your fingertips.

The Soapbox: Why solo players don't just play a single-player game

                      By myself, but not alone.
Disclaimer: The Soapbox column is entirely the opinion of this week's writer and does not necessarily reflect the views of Massively as a whole. If you're afraid of opinions other than your own, you might want to skip this column.

When I play an MMO, I tend to play solo. This isn't because I outright dislike grouping -- I've said exactly the opposite before -- but when given the choice, I'll default to solo. I don't always have a reliable play schedule, I like having the freedom to start and stop projects at my whim, and most importantly, I like the option of just tuning out a bit and losing myself in a solitary romp every now and again.

Some people get very bothered by this, though, and they really dislike the fact that there are solo players asking for more solo content. Sometimes it's rooted in a fear that solo content will interfere with group content, and sometimes it's because of the fear that no one will group if there's plenty to do solo, but the same argument gets brought up every time: "If you want to play solo, you should be playing a single-player game."

Except they're not the same thing. Not by far. There are distinct benefits to playing in an MMO even if you prefer doing most content solo instead of in a group.

Saying that it's on the "home stretch" leading up to the launch of Runes of Magic's next great content update, Frogster released a trailer highlighting the Shadowforge Dwarves from Chapter V. The trailer takes us through an abbreviated tale of how a fallen cadre of dwarves were set in stone for eons, only to come back to life once their curse was lifted.

The Shadowforge Dwarves are set to become the first new playable race in the game since its launch, and the third overall. Chapter V will also incorporate two additional classes, a new starting area, and several high-level zones and dungeons.

E3 2012 World of Battleships delivers a trailer
World of Battleships may be the newest title in Wargaming.net's arsenal, but that doesn't mean it's about to be overshadowed by its older siblings. The World War II-era battleship combat simulator arrived at E3 this week to show off a rather clever trailer illustrating how ships can be just as exciting as tanks and planes.

The trailer is interestingly framed, flashing between shipwrecks on the bottom of the ocean floor and shots of the ships in combat and taking damage. Presumably the message is, "We're going to litter the heck out of the ocean with the steel corpses of your failures -- unless you're good enough, that is."

World of Battleships will be joining World of Warplanes and World of Tanks under a unified battle realm. You can watch the smoky trailer action after the jump.

The Elder Scrolls Online -- Character teaser trailer screencap
We're expecting big things out of The Elder Scrolls Online during this year's E3, and to kick things off, Bethesda and ZeniMax have unveiled a new teaser trailer that shows off a small sampling of the characters players can look forward to taking control of when they get their hands on the game. While it's not exactly gameplay footage, perhaps the new video will assuage fans who are uncertain about the game's art direction. That, or it will enrage them further.

At any rate, the sample characters run the gamut of what you would expect from The Elder Scrolls: big bearded dude with an axe, sultry elven spellcaster, cloaked assassin -- you get the idea. The video's short and doesn't serve as much except for eye-candy, but if you're voracious for new TESO tidbits, it's definitely worth a look. Just head past the cut for the full trailer, and be sure to check back later this week for a chat with the folks behind the upcoming title.

[Update: We've also added another video, this one an interview of TESO's game director discussing and showing off the game, and the official site has updated with a new look and FAQ. Thanks to Paul for the tips!]

For those of you not in the loop, Wizardry Online is an online continuation of Sir-Tech's renowned retro Wizardry series of RPGs. But Wizardry Online isn't your average DIKU-style title; the developers make no bones about the game's hardcore nature, which is a result of features such as permadeath, player-killing, and friendly-fire. Further details are scant at the moment, but Massively will be chatting with SOE later this week at the Expo, so stay tuned for more information on this punishing new title. In the meantime, enjoy the gallery below and check out all the new screens.

Massively Speaking Episode 203 wonders whether making funny faces into a webcam will make your character hate you for it in the morning. Bree and Justin return from vacation to talk about the... interesting... SOEmote feature, RIFT's expansion, and plenty of listener emails.

Wargaming.net to unify all its titles in a 'single MMO battle realm'
Wargaming.net has not one, not two, but three action MMOs in its portfolio. You've probably played World of Tanks, and World of Warplanes just recently transitioned from alpha to closed beta. The company is also working on World of Battleships as well as a portal to connect all three World War II titles and allow gamers to access them instantly.

The service is called, er, Wargaming.net Service. Once it is deployed, players will receive unified Wargaming.net IDs "that will provide instant access to all games and services, as well as any partner or fan websites."

The company's latest press release also mentions something called a "single MMO battle realm," where tank, warplane, and battleship clans will assist one another in their quest for world domination.
