Overclocker Approaches 2GHz Barrier With A Modified GTX 680 In A Kick Ass Setup

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 09:08 AM PDT

How did you spend Easter weekend? Most folks spent the time hunting for eggs, prepping a feast or -- if they're not the Easter type -- slaying Droids and Dark Siders in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Not k|ngp|n (henceforth referred to as "Kingpin"), an overclocker known for tinkering with EVGA graphics cards. While you and I were busy getting face time in with grandma, Kingpin was busy pushing a GTX 680 right up against the 2GHz barrier.

Videocardz pointed us towards the forum thread highlighting the attempt. Kingpin used an Intel Sandy Bridge-E Core i7-3930k CPU overclocked to 5605MHz, an EVGA GTX 680 (surprise!), 16GB of RAM and liquid nitrogen cooling in his attempt. Alas, Kingpin wasn't quite able to crack 2GHz even with those lofty tools, but he came really, really close, hitting a 1958MHz core clock speed and a mem clock of 3734MHz. None too shabby! The setup hit a whopping P15731 score in 3DMark 11.

Want more nitty gritty details? Head over to this thread and scroll halfway down the page for a screenshot of all the appropriate benchmarks, including GPU-Z and CPU-Z pics. The Kingpin Cooling site also offers up a cheatsheet of helpful GTX 680 physical hardware modifications to make if you want into break into the world of crazy-ass overclocking yourself -- but remember that you're on your own if you bust your new $500 video card.

Former Intel Engineer Pleads Guilty To Stealing Itanium Secrets After Jumping Ship To AMD

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 09:02 AM PDT

Employers look for a lot of qualities in new hires: smarts, an impressive resume, technical skills, and hard workingness are some that often float to the top of the list. Apparently, someone forgot to tell Biswamohan Pani that "willingness to commit massive IP theft" wasn't a major selling point before he showed up at his new job at AMD with $200 to $400 million worth of Intel's deepest, darkest Itanium processor details in tow.

The actual dirty deed went down back in 2008, but Pani only pleaded guilty to the 5 counts of wire fraud last Friday, Reuters reports. As the story goes, Pani left Intel at the end of May, but stayed on the payroll until June 11 to use up some accrued vacation time. Rather than relaxing and unwinding during those two weeks, however, Pani landed himself a gig at AMD while still on the Intel payroll, then got busy downloading Itanium's design and manufacturing documents before being kicked out of Chipzilla's systems.

Unfortunately for Pani, Intel caught on pretty quickly, and AMD fired the new hire when the charges where filed in November 2008 -- less than six months after Pani started with the company. (Ironically, Pani's LinkedIn page still lists him as a Senior Staff Engineer at AMD.) According to the indictment, Pani planned on using the Itanium secrets to help him move up the ranks at AMD. AMD had no idea Pani was pilfering documents and isn't charged with any wrongdoing, but Pani's on a mighty big hook for his actions; he faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the five counts, with the sentencing due August. 8th.

Crime doesn't pay, kids.

AVADirect Unveils Updated Clevo Notebooks Rocking Intel's HM77 Chipset

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 07:15 AM PDT

Boutique system builder AVADirect readily admits it's "no secret" that it hasn't been offering Clevo-brand notebooks "for quite some time," and there was good reason for that. AVADirect was preparing for the next generation of notebooks built around Intel's HM77 chipset, which brings support for both 2nd generation (Sandy Bridge) and 3rd generation (Ivy Bridge) Core processors from Intel and native SuperSpeed USB 3.0 support.

AVADirect rolled out three new Clevo flavored notebooks, including 15.6-inch P151EM and P150EM models, and the 17.3-inch P170EM. All three are ready for the influx of mobile Ivy Bridge processors, and come ready to game with new 600M series graphics from Nvidia.

As far as high-end notebook prices go, all three models are relatively affordable. The P151EM starts at $1,277.50 and includes a Core i5 2430M processor, 4GB of Crucial DDR3-1333 memory, GeForce GTX 670M graphics, 750GB Seagate Momentus hard drive (7200 RPM, 16MB cache, SATA 3Gbps), DVD burner, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, GbE LAN, 9-in-1 memory card reader, integrated webcam, fingerprint reader, and various ports.

For a bit more coin ($1,582.93), the P150EM upgrades the CPU to a Core i7 2670QM and the graphics to a GeForce GTX 675M. The P170EM starts at $1,637.93 and rocks a Core i7 2670QM processor and GeForce GTX 670M graphics.

Asus Maximus V Gene Carries Next Generation Features in a Micro ATX Form Factor

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 06:49 AM PDT

The floodgates have been opened and motherboards built around Intel's brand spanking new Z77 Express chipset continue to pour into the market place. One of the newest to wash up is the Maximus V Gene, a Republic of Gamers (ROG) board from Asus. Like all Z77 boards, the Maximus V Gene is an LGA 1155 motherboard, but it's also one of the first to flaunt next-gen features in a micro-ATX form factor.

Despite its smallish stature, Asus found room to cram four DDR3 DIMM slots with support for up 32GB of memory clocked at 2800MHz (OC). The Maximus V Gene also features a pair of PCI-E x16 3.0 slots, a single PCI-E 4x 2.0 slot, a PCI-E x1 2.0 slot and SATA 3Gbps port on a mini PCI-E combo card, HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity, six USB 3.0 ports, eight USB 2.0 ports, four SATA 6Gbps ports, two SATA 3Gbps ports, and an eSATA port.

Asus says it built the Maximus V Gene for overclocking, and towards that end, the board boasts an 8+2+2 (CPU, iGPU, DRAM) phase design with precise digital power control from two DIGI+ controllers. You'll also find ROG UEFI BIOS functions such as pre-configured memory IC profiles.

Asus didn't say when the Maximus V Gene will ship or for how much. Ivy Bridge, however, is scheduled to come out later this month.

Google+ Visits Up 27 Percent in March, Still Think It's a Ghost Town?

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 06:23 AM PDT

Fair statement or not, the social networking scene consists of Facebook (the largest social playground in the solar system), Twitter (the most popular micro-blog around), and everyone else. That's how it's perceived, anyway, with Google+ viewed by many as not much more than a ghost town, a struggling afterthought that most people are familiar with, but nobody actually uses. If going by the numbers, that perception is wrong.

Experian Hitwise provided data to Mashable that shows visits to Google+ growing steadily in recent months. To wit, total visits to Google's social service topped 61 million in March, representing a remarkable 27 percent spike from the previous month, according to the data.

It's hard to view a site as a ghost town when it's growing at such a steady clip and logging 61 million visits, though the naysayers will be quick to point out that Hitwise's data says nothing about the activity level on Google+. Just because millions of people are checking it out doesn't necessarily mean they're actually posting content, but then again, there has to be content to attract that many visitors in the first place.

While Hitwise is reluctant to talk about Google+'s activity level, Google CEO Larry Page isn't.

"It's still in the early days, and we have a long way to go. But there are tremendously important changes, and with over 120 Google+ integrations to date (including Google Search, YouTube, and Android), we are on the right track," Page said a day before Hitwise released its data. "Well over 100 million users are active on Google+, and we're seeing a positive impact across the Web, with Google users being able to recommend search results and videos they like -- a goal we've had ever since we started the company,"

How often, if ever, do you visit Google+? How would you describe your activity level?

Microsoft, AOL Ink $1.1 Billion Patent Deal

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 05:34 AM PDT

AOL today entered into a definitive agreement to sell more than 800 patents outright to Microsoft and grant an additional 300 non-exclusive patents and patent applications to the Redmond software giant for $1.056 billion. A "significant" portion of the money raised will go to shareholders, AOL announced.

The 300 patents and patent applications that remain in AOL's portfolio span core and strategic technologies, such as advertising, search, content generation/management, social networking, mapping, multimedia/streaming, and security, plus a whole bunch more. And while AOL's portfolio is 800 patents lighter (and it's wallet nearly $1.1 billion heavier), part of the transaction includes AOL receiving a license from Microsoft for the transferred patents.

"The agreement with Microsoft represents the culmination of a robust auction process for our patent portfolio," said Tim Armstrong, AOL's Chairman and CEO. "We continue to hold a valuable patent portfolio as highlighted by the license we entered into with Microsoft. The combined sale and licensing arrangement unlocks current dollar value for our shareholders and enables AOL to continue to aggressively execute on our strategy to create long-term shareholder value."

Investors responded positively to AOL's patent sale by pumping the company's stock price by as much 39 percent to $25.63 in pre-market trading. It's currently up by more than 31 percent at $24.19 before the market opens. Microsoft, meanwhile, is down 0.82 percent to $31.26 in pre-market trading.

April events for Mythos Global detailed, keeps gamers on their toes with completely new events each month

LOS ANGELES – Apr. 6, 2012 - HanbitSoft and T3Fun's philosophy is to keep Mythos Global an always-fresh Action MMORPG every month with completely new events to add to the gameplay experience for fans. The first two events for April are "Lucky Adventure" and "Mythos Precognition" which both give double luck and double experience buffs at random times and on random days. These two events will be ongoing throughout the month so players will have plenty to show for their time in Mythos' fantasy world of Uld this month!

"Golden Trash" is an event which will turn your unused materials or junk items into something very useful—consider this an inspiration to be digitally eco-friendly! A GM may at random request a certain material, and players must rush to him/her to swap it for a random item that may be anything from an XP boost to attribute or skill resets.

Mythos Global  also has two Facebook events going on this April. The first is the "Mythical Quiz." For two weeks, beginning April 16, a question about Mythos will be asked on the Facebook fan page each day. Players who correctly answer the question as fast as possible can win a special in-game costume!

The other Facebook event is called "Facebook Achievements," and will be a permanent event where all players will be rewarded with triple luck buffs every time the fan page receives 300 new likes.

WEBZEN Inc. (WWW.WEBZEN.COM), the Next Generation of Free-to-Play Online Games, announced its new synopsis trailer on their teaser website for the modern military FPS game, ARCTIC COMBAT.

Today, WEBZEN revealed their newly updated ARCTIC COMBAT teaser site (ac.webzen.com) with the new synopsis trailer, 'Unseen Danger', along with the official ARCTIC COMBAT YouTube Channel (www.youtube.com/user/GlobalArcticCombat).

ARCTIC COMBAT's new synopsis trailer reveals the initial dispute between US, NATO, and Russia after the announcement of the estimated amount of buried resources beneath the Arctic Ocean. The trailer shows actual military line-up scenes and Wikileak cases that express conflicts and conspiracies adding realism to the trailer.

Also, actual in-game play scenes featuring tactical strategies can be seen in the trailer including helicopter fire support and artillery bombardment. Other distinctive tactical assets are flamethrowers, UAVs, and rocket launchers, which can be used to reverse the battle situation. WEBZEN plans to reveal more cinematic trailers continuing the conflicts between the 'AF', led by the US, and the 'RSA', led by Russia, that causes the break out of World War III.

ARCTIC COMBAT uses an optimized game engine that allows low-end users to play while keeping high realistic effects, including corpse damage for gore mode, making users more immersed into the modern warfare battleground. The high-tech modern weaponry and real life like maps adds to the excitement. WEBZEN has scheduled the test for ARCTIC COMBAT in the first half of this year.

Jihun Lee, Head of Global Publishing, said, "ARCTIC COMBAT has its distinctive features making it a skill-based FPS game without taking out the basic features that most FPS gamers can adjust to." also he said, "During the test, in the first half of this year, users can participate to be the veteran and dominate the battleground."

Meanwhile, WEBZEN.com's 3rd Anniversary Celebration event is underway celebrating 3 years of its global portal with events for their various titles including ARCTIC COMBAT.

More information about WEBZEN's new FPS game, ARCTIC COMBAT, and their released synopsis trailer can be found at their official website (ac.webzen.com) and Facebook page. (www.facebook.com/ArcticCombat)

City of Steam fashions a pressurized skill tree

City of Steam
Many MMOs have skill or talent trees, but when you're doing a steampunk game, why not take a bland staple of the genre and turn it into something awesome? That's the thinking behind City of Steam's Lead Designer Dave Winking, who shows off the team's ideas for turning the mundane into the fantastical.

After taking feedback from previous generic builds, City of Steam's dev team revamped the skill tree's visuals and mechanics to entice a "whoa!" out of its players. The concept is that the tree is now a maze of pipes, boilers, and valves. Players will build up "pressure" over time which can be vented into different pipes. The more pressure in a pipe, the higher a skill goes, and once a skill hits 100% pressure, it's usable by the player.

Winking says that players have more options than just filling up a pipe; they can over-pressurize pipes to achieve higher skill ranks, and take multiple paths to achieve better skills. There's even a mystery skill that Winking says will "make your character explode into pieces of bread with cat's heads stuck through them." Of course, he then says he's probably teasing about the last thing.

The Repopulation broadcasts its first public gameplay footage

The Repopulation
Drips and drabs of information about the sci-fi sandbox The Repopulation have been coming in, but as with any title in early development, it's never enough to satiate the masses who want the whole scoop. So consider today's bounty of the first gameplay footage and a lore piece as an appetizer to tide you over until the main course.

The gameplay video demonstrates one of the core features of The Repopulation: its city-building system. During the 12-and-a-half minutes the video runs, fans can check out how cities are put together piece by piece using a wide variety of tools and fellow player cooperation. The devs also take this opportunity to discuss the UI, controls, and how alliances work in the game.

The team also posted a lore piece called Leesa's Story on the site. The vignette introduces the titular character, a cook who also happens to be a cook, and her misguided adventures going duck hunting.

The Repopulation is currently accepting signups for its alpha testing, which begins in June. You can watch the full video after the break.

[Thanks to J.C. for the tip!]

The Daily Grind: When do you consider a game to be 'dying'?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2012 06:00 AM PDT

    Image
If you listen to internet negativity, every game is dying. World of Warcraft is dying, some folks say, because it's lost a fraction of its population after seven years. RIFT is "obviously" pushing out tons of content only because it's desperate and dying. Two million players and queues in Star Wars: The Old Republic also mean the game is dying. A game goes free-to-play? Dying. Keeps a subscription? Dying. Box on sale? Dying. Moves to Steam? Dying. Merges servers? Dying. Doesn't merge servers? Dying!

It's true that some games have gone under, but many more are hanging in there after a decade, even if they aren't blockbusters that impress people used to seeing populations in the millions. If World of Warcraft dwindled to as few players as, say, Asheron's Call, I still wouldn't call that dying. It might be small, but it's still alive and still getting updates, and that's more than I can say for some games.

What about you -- when, exactly, in a game's timeline do you consider that game to be dying?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Buffs coming for League of Legends' Kayle, Teemo and more

        League of Legends title image
It's been a long time coming, but a major buff patch is about to hit League of Legends. The patch that will introduce new champion Hecarim comes with a whole host of balance changes to other champions and gameplay mechanics. Kayle's Divine Blessing is being improved to provide a much bigger heal and haste buff at the cost of more mana, making her more a effective support or carry without imbalancing lane sustainability. Teemo is getting some much-needed buffs along with a major bug fix that should increase his damage output significantly. The bug was responsible for Teemo's damage output's dropping after level 6 or so and not scaling properly with attack speed.

After talking to players and running some numbers, Riot Games discovered that offensive rune pages were always inferior to just stacking magic resistance. Flat magic resistance runes are being nerfed, while flat magic penetration and ability power runes are getting buffed. The biggest change coming in the patch is a tweak to the experience given out for killing enemy champions. To prevent games from quickly snowballing out of control, Riot is increasing the experience gained by killing players who out-level you and is decreasing the reward earned by killing lowbies. This should let losing teams get back in the game if they can win several teamfights. Skip past the cut to watch the full Hecarim patch preview video!

New Diablo III launch site collapses under the weight of fans

        Diablo III title image
With just over a month left until Diablo III is released, Blizzard launched its new Darkness Falls, Heroes Rise minisite to get people excited. Fans can enter an art contest with some big prizes or create a banner to unlock an exclusive in-game banner sigil that will never be given away outside this event. The site is one big social media campaign, with exclusive content that unlocks when players share enough contest entries on Facebook and Twitter. Fansite DiabloFans revealed that the unlocks will include developer diaries, wallpapers and more. Once the share meter reaches 100%, a final epic unveiling will occur that Blizzard's Bashiok says "is going to melt people's brain meats."

When the site first launched, fans reported everything from PHP errors to lost connections and 404 pages. The site has since been stabilised but doesn't appear to be working as intended. The galleries are no longer updating, confirmation emails are not being sent for entries, and the unlock level hasn't budged from 0%. As we'll need just under 3% per day to meet the 100% goal, players are concerned that if the meter isn't broken, then expectations may have been set too high.

        One Shots: A new dawn

        One Shots
One Shots is making a tentative return in its new format and timeslot this weekend! Kicking off the screenshot-madness is Johanis, who's delivered a gorgeous shot of what looks suspiciously like a sparklepony in RIFT (and seriously makes me want to resub). He writes in,
I wanted to share a picture of Samya, my level 20 Mathosian Mage in RIFT. This particular shot was taken just as she had received her achievement awarded for climbing to the highest mountain in Silverwood. I had to climb quite a few mountains before I hit this spot, and the view made the climb worth it. Just beautiful. She was also quite proud to be riding her newly acquired Nebula mount, which she earned during the current Carnival.
Johanis' screenshot, along with a few other gems from this week, is just behind the cut!

Ready, aim, Firefall: Impressions of the closed beta

          Screenshot -- Firefall
Last year at PAX Prime, I had the opportunity to get my hands on an early version of Red 5 Studios' upcoming MMOFPS, Firefall. The game's come a long way since then, having gone into closed beta shortly after PAX Prime.

As of Friday, the game's NDA has finally dropped, and I can finally tell you fine folks all about my experiences with the game's beta. For those of you somehow not in the know, Firefall is essentially two games in one. On the one hand, you have the title's open-world PvE content that sees players exploring the lands of New Eden in an attempt to find a way to fight back the destructive alien force known as the Melding. On the other, there's the competitive e-sports-esque PvP, which lets players test their skills against each another to see who's the best shot in New Eden. So how much has Firefall changed between PAX Prime '11 and PAX East '12?
