Canonical Unveils Deeply Integrated Ubuntu For Android, Mixes Phones With Desktops

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 11:27 AM PST

As smartphones grow more and more powerful, they've come to resemble miniature computers more than the rotary phones of our past. In fact, smartphones and tablets are becoming so powerful that some analysts have posited that we're moving into a post-PC world. Maximum PC's response? Post PC my ass -- but that's a lot harder to say in the wake of the new Ubuntu distro for Android devices. When you're squawking, it's a normal Android phone, but the second you connect the phone to a monitor and keyboard -- BAM! -- you're greeted by a full Ubuntu desktop experience.

This ain't no namby-pamby slap-dash conversion, either; Android and Ubuntu run side-by-side and share the same address book, calendar, settings, photos and social media passwords to make the whole thing seamless. You'll be able to make calls and texts while using the Ubuntu desktop, too. The magic happens because Android and Ubuntu for Android use the same kernel.

It's a really intriguing concept, but be forewarned: you'll need a pretty beefy phone to pull it off, plus the aforementioned monitor and keyboard. Here are the phone requirements:

  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or higher
  • Dual-core 1GHz CPU or higher (multi-cores required)
  • Video acceleration: shared kernel driver with associated X driver; Open GL, ES/EGL
  • 2GB storage for the OS disk image
  • 512 MB RAM
  • HDMI video out with secondary frame buffer device
  • USB host mode

Canonical plans on showing off Ubuntu for Android at Mobile World Conference next week; hopefully, we'll get more details then. In the meantime, here's the list of specs and features. The OS is only available to OEMs at the moment, alas.

Does Ubuntu for Android get you jazzed, or do you consider it another unwanted attempt to blur the line between PC and smartphone? No matter what, it's a nifty out-of-the-box idea.

Nvidia Releases WHQL-Certified 295.73 GeForce Drivers

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 10:47 AM PST

Good news if you're the proud owner of a Nvidia GeForce graphics card: after a flood of beta drivers, the first WHQL-certified drivers from the Release 295 family are ready to roll. Nvidia promises that the 295.73 WHQL drivers pack in all the upgrades found in the recent beta drivers, "plus a few other treats." Every GeForce card ever released looks to be supported.

The 295.73 drivers increase performance and offer a slew of compatibility upgrades for all kinds of Nvidia technology, including 3D Vision, PhysX and SLI support. Numerous titles earned new bells and whistles. Nvidia even threw in SLI support for the Mass Effect 3 demo, and Skyrim, Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 all see significant tweaks. Graphics aren't the only beneficiary of these drivers, by the way: HD Audio and Nvidia Surround received updates and additional mobo support.

Normally, we'd list games that received 3D Vision or SLI improvements, but the 295.73 drivers include a lot of changes. For specific info about improvements for Skyrim and ME3, check out the blog post announcing the release, or just head over to the GeForce drivers page, enter your PC's info, and see the complete list of improvements for yourself. Heck, why not download the drivers while you're there?

Sapphire Unveils AMD E450-Powered Edge-HD3 Mini PC

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 10:14 AM PST

Not too long ago, Sapphire rolled out the diminutive Edge-HD Mini PC, which was hailed as the teeny-tiniest PC in all the land. (The company also oddly claimed the PC's "less than half a liter in volume!" You know, in case you wanted to fill it with Kool-Aid or something.) Despite its small size, the Atom-based Edge-HD packed a decent punch and racked up a lot of fans. Now, Sapphire's pulled the curtain off the Mini PC's follow-up. The aptly named Edge-HD3 ditches Intel for a 1.6GHz AMD E450 APU that gives the PC a performance boost over its predecessors.

The other major components received a boost, too; while the Atom-powered original includes just 2GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD, the Edge-HD3 packs 4GB of RAM and a 320GB HDD into the same small frame. There's an HDMI port onboard for 1920x1080 output and even better yet, you'll find both an HDMI and an HDMI-DVI converter cable in the box. The one thing missing: a baked-in operating system.

So yeah, it'll handle Microsoft Office, but Sapphire also says the setup "takes most mainstream games in its stride" and claims that "even the more hardcore LAN party visitors will find the easily portable EDGE-HD3 a useful weapon in their armoury." To that end the PC sports 2 USB 3.0 ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port and built in Wi-Fi. And despite the claims, we'd casually suggest that hardcore LAN party visitors steer away from playing BF3 on the thing.

No word yet on pricing or availability, but there's a full list of Edge-HD3 specs up on the Sapphire website.

It's Official: Barnes & Noble Rolls Out 8GB Nook Tablet for $199

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 07:26 AM PST

Barnes & Noble on Tuesday officially introduced a previously rumored 8GB version of its low price Nook Tablet. By cutting internal storage in half from 16GB and reducing the amount of RAM to 512MB, B&N was able to shave $50 off the retail cost and sell the new version for $199, the same exact price as Amazon's competing Kindle Fire tablet, which happens to be the second most popular slate on the planet behind Apple's iPad.

"For any customer who likes to read digitally, watch movies or TV shows, browse the web, or help their kids read and learn through interactive books and apps, our new $199 Nook Tablet with 8GB is the best product value on the market," said William Lynch, Chief Executive Office of Barnes & Noble.

The 8GB Nook Tablet has more in common with the Kindle Fire than ever. Both sport the same amount of internal storage (albeit the Nook Tablet only gives users access to 1GB for non-B&N content), same amount of RAM, the same 1GHz dual-core processor, and now the same price tag. Spec for spec, they're nearly identical, though the Nook Tablet has a few things the Kindle Fire doesn't, like physical controls, a microphone, and a microSD card slot for expandable storage.

B&N also announced a new low price for its Nook Color device, which has been reduced to $169, or $30 cheaper than both the Kindle Fire and 8GB Nook Tablet.

You can buy the 8GB Nook Tablet now.

Origin PC's EON17-X3D is First 3D Laptop with Dual Graphics Cards

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 06:44 AM PST

Three-dimensional laptop displays have been done before, and so have dual graphics cards configured in SLI. According to the boutique system builders at Origin PC, they've just never been done at the same time in a mobile form factor. That is, until now. Origin PC's EON17-X3D is supposedly the world's first 3D laptop to come with two videocards crammed inside for an insane amount of pixel-pushing power.

It's pretty much the same system as Origin PC's recently announced EON17-X, but with 3D capabilities. As a refresher, this desktop replacement is built around Intel's X79 chipset with support for second generation hexacore processors. It supports up to 32GB of 1333MHz Corsair quad-channel or up to 16GB of 1866MHz Corsair Vengeance quad-channel memory, up to three hard drives with RAID support, it has a backlit keyboard, and several other high-end amenities.

Specific to the EON17-X3D is a built-in 3D emitter and 1080p 3D display. The system comes with a pair of Nvidia 3D Vision 2 wireless glasses with LightBoost technology.

The fully customizable EON17-X3D is available now starting at $3,032.

There seems to be something new on the ultrabook front almost everyday, with the ultrabook models that were announced at last month's Consumer Electronics Show now hitting store shelves one by one. Lenovo's IdeaPad U300e, one of several models showcased by the vendor at CES, is the latest, having gone up for for pre-order on the company's website. Hit the jump for more.

The SKU currently listed on Lenovo's website does not appear to be the base model, which is supposed to rock a 1.4GHz Core i3-2367M and carry a $799 price tag. This particular model (U300e 269224U) not only has a more powerful 1.6GHz Core i5-2467M processor but also sports a higher price tag. The specs of the U300e 269224U are as follows:

The IdeaPad U300e is supposed to be a budget alternative to the more powerful and leaner IdeaPad U300s. However, at $959 it's only marginally cheaper than the identically configured U300s 10802BU. According to the listing, the U300e will begin shipping in more than 4 weeks.

Analyst: Chip Sales Off to a Slow Start in 2012

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 06:24 AM PST

A perfect storm of contributing factors led to disappointing chip sales in January, which fell 15 percent globally compared to the same period one year prior, according to Bruce Diesen, an analyst with Carnegie Group in Norway. One of those factors is easy to guess and belongs to the hard drive shortage that resulted from flooding in Thailand, which in turn has been driving up costs. But that's not the only reason sales are slumping.

Overall weakness in the PC market and lower than expected demand in the mobile phone and automotive business markets have also contributed to January's slow start. Based on Diesen's calculations, the three-month average of global chip sales for January is expected to be $22.7 billion, EETimes reports.

"Although several chip makers indicated the inventory correction in Q4 has ended, our early indicator indicates that it continued into Q1," Diesen said.

Looking ahead, February's sales figures will likely be higher, which will come as a result of China having celebrated an early New Year.

Ultrabooks Attracting Unpopular Fans

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 05:54 AM PST

Intel's Ultrabook initiative might have been met with early skepticism, some of which still remains, but by and large, the light and powerful form factor is proving popular. It's also creating demand for small size components that can be squeezed into a pancake thin frame. As time goes on, expect to see Ultrabook models start to adopt 4mm micro fans that were originally developed for the handset market.

Citing sources entrenched in the cooling fan game, DigiTimes reports Acer's second generation Aspire S5 Ultrabook will rely on 4mm micro fans to keep its insides nice and chilly, or at least from burning up. Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and LG have all shown interest in using micro fans as well.

Those who develop cooling fans tell DigiTimes that 4mm is as thin as it gets with current technology, and while they were originally intended for handsets,4mm fans are a bit too loud for devices designed to sit up next a person's ear. That problem doesn't exist with Ultrabooks, which currently use 5.5mm or 7mm fans, depending on the model.

Switching to 4mm micro fans will drive up costs, though not by much. A typical fan used in today's Ultrabooks runs about $1.15 to $1.20, whereas 4mm micro fans can cost around $1.60 to $1.70.

Valve-Branded Gaming Hardware on the Way? Gabe Newell Says It Could Happen

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 03:45 AM PST

If you're currently imagining a dystopic future in which we all nervously salute guards clad in Combine outfits while texting on our Steam-powered phones and breathing the Steam-branded air, calm down. Gabe Newell has no aspirations of heading up his own ill-gotten evil empire. In truth, he'd prefer that Valve forever avoids getting its hands dirty with the greasy innards of some proprietary piece of hardware. However, if it's the "only" way to keep innovation's gears churning, then he won't hesitate to bite that particular bullet.

"Well, if we have to sell hardware we will," he told Penny Arcade. "We have no reason to believe we're any good at it, it's more we think that we need to continue to have innovation and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that's what we'll do.

"It's definitely not the first thought that crosses our mind; we'd rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do that. We think it's important enough that if that's what we end up having to do then that's what we end up having to do."

The newly bearded Newell also noted the Valve hivemind has been abuzz about wearable computers and biofeedback as of late, so – on the off-chance something like this occurred – it probably wouldn't be another cookie-cutter console war competitor.

For now, though, Valve's figurative Swiss army knife that might very well include a Swiss army as one of its many features is but a pipe dream. Instead, Steam and an ever-expanding suite of games are the orders of the day. So then, is Half-Life 2: Episode 3 among them?

"We're trying to be careful not to get people too excited and then have to go and disappoint them," he replied when asked about "Episode 3 or Left 4 Dead 3." "So we're sort of reacting in the other direction and saying 'okay, well let's have things a little more baked before we start getting people all excited about it.'"

Pockie Ninja celebrating one year anniversary

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 10:57 AM PST

Pockie Ninja is preparing to celebrate its first year anniversary with a series of events for its players.

Starting in early March, players can visit the Anniversary Wishing Wall to tell NGames what they would like to see in future updates, and share playing memories over the past year. Players who share on the wall will be eligible to earn prizes, which improve with the number of wishes received on the wall.

Other challenges will be given to players during the celebrations, with rewards for defeating bosses and winning in the arenas, which will grant special outfits – the Hollowfied Aizen and Kushina Uzumaki – for a limited time. A video contest will also be held in the community.

Pockie Ninja preparing for birthday celebrations

Party hats at the ready – this year’s “Most Popular Browser Game” (as voted by BBGsite) is about to turn one

Naruto and Bleach inspired MMO brawler, Pockie Ninja is celebrating it’s first birthday throughout March and April! Publisher NGames have revealed some anniversary events to celebrate an amazing first year.

Originally announced as the secretive “Project Ninja” at the start of 2011, Pockie Ninja quickly became one of the fastest growing MMO’s online today. Over the last 12 months, the anime-inspired browser-based MMORPG has won multiple awards, released several free updates, and has amassed an incredible 11 million registered users.

Publisher NGames have revealed a string of events to celebrate Pockie Ninja’s first birthday, including a chance to get hands-on and win real world gifts by creating videos inspired by the game.

Birthday Celebrations

From early March onwards, Pockie Ninja players will be able to interact with a huge range of special anniversary events.

An “Anniversary Wishing Wall” will be introduced in-game that allows players to tell NGames everything they would like to see in future Pockie Ninja updates. The wall will also be used as a place to post precious playing memories from the past year; creating a past-and-future wall for everybody to admire.

Ninjas who post on the wall will be eligible to receive fantastic in-game gifts, and everybody is encouraged to get involved – the more the number of wishes, the better the gifts players will receive!

New Outfits and Challenges

A variety of challenges will be thrown at players during the anniversary celebrations, with rewards on offer for defeating demon bosses, winning a set number of times in the arena, and more.

NGames are excited to reveal two brand new, special anniversary outfits that Pockie Ninja players will be able to win by completing the anniversary events.

The first is the most powerful antagonist outfit available – Hollowfied Aizen. Belonging to Sosuke Aizen, the most dangerous and manipulating character in Bleach, this outfit carries the true ambition of the former captain of the 5th division in the Gotei 13. Sosuke is famous for betraying the Soul Society and, with this outfit, maybe you can betray your enemies too.

In contrast, the second new outfit comes from Kushina Uzumaki, mother of the infamous Naruto Uzumaki. Kushina is known for her long bright red hair and cheerily optimistic disposition, as well as not being very good at using ninjutsu. But what she lacks in ninja skills she makes up for with her special form of Chakra, which enables her to produce chakra chains and the ability to restrain opponents.

Video Contest

Pockie Ninja players will be able to win real life gifts by unleashing their creative side and making videos inspired by the game.

Players will be allowed to vote for each others videos, and the creators can post their videos on Facebook and Twitter to earn more votes and increase their chance of winning.

The 10 best entries will be chosen to win gifts after the event, with the top 2 winners receiving mystery real world gifts.

Royal Quest

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 08:38 AM PST

[Game website] I am guessing most of you have forgotten about this MMO, and luckily a new trailer released today helped refreshed mine as well. Royal Quest is developed by Katauri Interactive, the company behind the King’s Bounty game franchise, including King’s Bounty: The Legend (link) and King’s Bounty: Armored Princess (link). This new trailer shows more combat footage and some talk about alchemy’s role in the game.

Below is a list of the game’s features as listed on the game website if you are too lazy to visit (I know, I have such days as well). There are some PvP footage floating around from early test phases, in Russian though as both the developer and publisher are from the Land of Vodka.

Syndicate Review: Starbreeze’s Latest Excels at Co-Op But Falters in Single-player

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 02:37 AM PST

“Some say I’ve been lazy,” admits the King of All Cosmos in the opening sequence of Touch My Katamari. “Phoning it in.” This is meant to be hilarious — that crazy King, always so pompous, yet vain enough to be stung by criticism! — but the wittiness of the whole thing is badly undermined by the fact that Touch My Katamari is lazy. Namco is, in fact, phoning it in.

Of course, the best parody is that which rings of the truth. In that sense, sure, this game is pretty parodic. Damningly so, I’d say. The problem is that I don’t think it was meant to be self-satire; certainly it’s not an exercise in self-reflection. All this talk of apathy and flabbiness are meant to be loving, tongue-in-cheek pokes at the character, not a frank assessment of the software itself. So, it’s either a joke that reflects a jarring lack of self-awareness by the developers, or else it’s a snide middle finger to the player: Yeah, this game is warmed-over, recycled content, but we’re gonna fix that! By… making you do the exact same things you did in the last five Katamari games. Thanks for the 30 bones, suckers.

Portal 2′s Tardy DLC Comes Out on Tuesday

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 01:29 AM PST

Portal 2

Though it took longer than expected, the first downloadable content pack for Portal 2 will soon be here on all three of the game’s platforms.

Portal 2: Peer Review, as it’s been officially titled, was announced shortly after the game’s release in April. It was scheduled for a summer release, and when it began to look like Valve wouldn’t meet that date, it reassured fans it would be out by mid-September. That date, too, came and went, but we now have an actual, hard date, and one that’s far too close for it to slip once again.

Peer Review will be released on Tuesday, October 4 on Steam, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Or rather, its global rollout will begin then, so depending upon where in the world you live, there may be a bit of an additional wait.

The DLC is free on all three platforms and includes content for fans of both the solo and co-op campaigns. The story of P-Body and Atlas — the two co-op robots — continues in Peer Review “as you puzzle your way through a mysterious new co-op test track and once again match wits with GLaDOS.” A new Challenge mode is introduced for both single-player and co-op, and accompanying leaderboards will let you compare your scores with other players.

Coinciding with the announcement, the last of three soundtrack volumes has been released as a free download today. You can grab all 64 songs comprising the three volumes (and a number of ringtones for iPhone and Android devices) here.

Rejuvenated 3DS Could Provide a Home For Mid-Tier Games

Posted: 20 Feb 2012 02:35 PM PST

3DS

In what can only be described as a remarkable turnaround, the 3DS has gone from struggling badly enough that it necessitated a steep price drop to breaking a record by reaching 5 million units sold in Japan faster than any other platform. It took 52 weeks to reach that milestone, compared with 56 weeks for the original DS and 58 weeks for the Game Boy Advance before it.

It wasn’t all that long ago that much of the talk about 3DS centered about how it was a doomed platform, one destined for failure because it was designed for a market that no longer exists in the size it once did. There were legitimate concerns to be voiced, as platforms like the iPhone and iPad have arguably taken a bite out of the handheld gaming market, but pronouncements of the platform’s death before it could even reach the holiday shopping season or see the release of its first big games (Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Monster Hunter 3G) were clearly premature. Reaching 5 million units sold in Japan is no guarantee the system will continue to sell this well moving forward; it is, however, an encouraging sign for Nintendo, Sony, and third-party developers to see there is demand for portable gaming systems provided the price is right and desirable software is available.

Additionally, Japanese publication Nikkei (as translated by Andriasang) is reporting Seaman is to be revived for release on 3DS. As random as that may sound to you, a release of the Dreamcast classic was hinted at in 2010 when designer Yoot Saito tweeted about his interest in seeing a 3DS version released. The game saw players interacting with a virtual pet — a fish with a human head being the most common form — through the use of a microphone. The Seaman would need to be fed and spoken to on a regular basis, and if it wasn’t attended to daily it could die. Suffice it to say, it was a weird, unique game that doesn’t exactly hold the potential to sell as well as Mario or Call of Duty.

Seaman could fall in the category of what you might call mid-range or mid-tier games, a rapidly disappearing market losing ground to massive, AAA games (like the aforementioned Call of Duty) and smaller, indie titles (VVVVVV, for example). It was around this time last year when Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski suggested “the middle class game is dead,” comparing games to the film industry where it’s the blockbusters and indie films that do well in theaters, not the stuff in between.

While they are certainly in decline, I don’t think the market for mid-tier games is dead. In fact, as long as 3DS sales don’t begin to peter out (in addition to the 5 million sold in Japan, 3DS sales are over 4 million in the U.S.) Nintendo’s latest handheld seems to present the perfect opportunity for these titles to succeed. Nintendo seems to realize this, as Nikkei reports the company is looking to revive other publisher’s games on 3DS, with Seaman being just one example.

Pricing is one key element when it comes to selling mid-tier games. Publishers typically can’t sell them for $10, and pricing them at $60 against the Skyrims or Modern Warfare 3s is a death sentence. Yet discounting such a game to, say, $40 on consoles can bring with it a negative connotation that the game simply isn’t any good. This isn’t always the case (Deadly Premonition was good, cheap, and sold quite well, whereas MX vs. ATV Alive was mediocre and sold accordingly), although in the portable market it’s less of a problem: a new 3DS game being priced at $20 or $30 is less likely to make people question its quality than a $40 Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 game.

There is also a much different expectation when it comes to the visual quality of a 3DS game. Graphics are not everything, but there is a certain level of expectation about how good a retail game will look on an HD console. An ugly 360/PS3 game that wouldn’t look out of place on the PS2 generation of hardware is off-putting. 3DS, on the other hand, is capable of powering good-looking games — just look at Resident Evil: Revelations — but overall the bar is not as high as on consoles or even Vita. That makes it easier to create a game on a more limited budget, as is often the case when developing mid-range titles.

Many publishers may decide to follow the lead of companies like Activision and continue to focus on higher-margin games at the expense of the mid-tier stuff. But with 3DS thriving right now and console development sure to become even more expensive as the next generation of hardware approaches, the opportunity is there to embrace the middle space in a way it has not been in recent years.

NCsoft

Posted: 20 Feb 2012 02:35 PM PST

Earlier today, NCsoft released its financial report for the 4th Quarter of 2011, which is the final 4 months. As seen n the chart below, Aion is the king of earnings for the mega corporation, with Lineage 1 on a near 2nd place. This is really quite an achievement for Lineage 1, seeing how the North American server has closed down and the China server in the process of having a Closed Beta under a new publisher, Tencent Games.

Comparing the income for 2011 against 2010 (yearly comparison), there is a slight drop across the board. It seems insignificant enough to raise emergency alarms across the company, but the board will want to have a better 2012 with big games including Blade Soul (going live by mid 2012) and Guild Wars 2 launching.

I just received news that NCsoft has also bought a majority stake in Korean developer Ntreev, the studio behind games such as Pangya, Trickster and a host of successful baseball games in Korea. More on that when more info is available.

Missing Mascots: Gaming Personalities that Slipped Off the Radar

Posted: 20 Feb 2012 01:26 PM PST

Once upon a time, they were important. They were more than just video-game characters scrambling to be the next Pac-Man or Mario. They were the symbols of game companies, seen in logos and commercials and as many cameo appearances as possible. Then they dropped out of the spotlight, thrown aside by a game industry that just didn’t have a place for a bald cave-child or a cross-eyed pink dinosaur.

They’re the fallen mascots of game generations past. Some were too bland to survive. Some hit a streak of lousy games. Some were just hitched to the wrong company. But all of them were mascots in the true sense. They served as the public faces of developers and publishers, and that makes the difference between a Bonk and a Battletoad. Here’s a chronicle of the once-proud mascots worth remembering today.

Alex Kidd

As icons of the game industry go, Alex Kidd was just too darned nice. The same can be said for the Sega Master System, which only shrugged while Nintendo’s NES conquered the game industry and the youth of the world in the 1980s. Alex Kidd was there through it all, a vaguely apelike action hero who punched things with his expandable fists. In testament to Sega’s wishy-washy approach to the Master System, Alex was the console’s mascot just because no one could think of a better one.

Not that Alex Kidd was lacking in material. His first game, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, mixed the stylings of a side-scroller with motorbike racing, helicopter flights, and rock-paper-scissors mini-games. Yet it was nothing that kids couldn’t get on the NES, and the same went for Alex’s subsequent games: The Lost Stars, BMX Trial, High-Tech World, and Shinobi World. Even the arrival of the Sega Genesis didn’t give him an edge. The 16-bit Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle was still a banal side-scroller, and Alex was still a big-eared boy who never stood up to Mario and Nintendo. Alex Kidd in Shinobi World originally featured a big-nosed, mustachioed boss named “Mari-Oh,” but this was changed for the final game. Alex wasn’t very good at confrontations.

Sega needed a more aggressive mascot to accompany the Genesis and its more combative advertising, and they found it in Sonic the Hedgehog. Alex Kidd was swiftly relegated to the world of cameos, showing up as a vending-machine prize in Shenmue and, in a heartbreaking turn, a depressed store clerk in the parody RPG Segagaga.

Last Known Whereabouts:

Sega canceled a remake of Miracle World for their Sega Ages 2500 series, but they cared enough to put Alex in the recent Sega All-Stars Racing as well as Sega Superstars Tennis.

Bonk

The TurboGrafx-16 was marked by false starts, especially in its search for a mascot. NEC’s console launched in North America with Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, which was Hudson’s Mashin Eiyuden Wataru game renamed and packed with a superhero comic. This made no impression on TurboGrafx owners, and the system’s real hero soon emerged from Bonk’s Adventure, a side-scroller about a cave-child who bashes enemies with his giant hairless noggin. It was Bonk who appeared in TurboGrafx ads and fliers. It was Bonk who stood against Sonic and Mario. And it was Bonk who should’ve been bundled with every TurboGrafx from the get-go.

Bonk’s three main side-scrollers are solid stuff, with bright, simple graphics that recall The Flintstones as much as they do children’s anime. Unfortunately, Bonk himself lacked a gimmick. It was amusing to watch him beat back foes with his head or gnaw his way up a cliff, but nothing he did really influenced gameplay (and advertising) quite as effectively as Sonic’s speed. Still, he beat Keith Courage by miles.

Bonk was remodeled in 1992 for Air Zonk, a shooter that starred a futuristic cyborg version of the caveman hero. It arrived just in time to make Zonk the mascot for NEC’s TurboDuo, despite the briefly disastrous introduction of a comic-book spokesman called Johnny Turbo. Fortunately, the Bonk of the Future won out as the TurboDuo’s poster boy until the system’s demise. As with most things on the TurboGrafx, Bonk knew greater success in Japan. Under the name PC Genjin (a play on the TurboGrafx’s Japanese incarnation, the PC Engine), Bonk saw a mini-game collection and many ports of his original game released there. He didn’t quite make it into the next generation of consoles, however, as a Nintendo 64 version of Bonk was scuttled and turned into Bomberman 64.

Last Known Whereabouts:

Bonk was poised for a comeback just last year, when a newly reformed American branch of Hudson showed off Bonk: Brink of Extinction, a simple platformer for the Wii, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network. Unfortunately, Hudson’s U.S. branch shut down in 2011, and Bonk’s big return was canceled. Hudson mascots like Master Higgins and the Hudson Bee remain prominent, but Bonk’s still waiting.

Boomer

Asmik’s contributions to video games are minor. Though they published dozens of titles for various Nintendo systems, their best finds were curious mediocrities like Xardion and Wurm: Journey to the Center of the Earth. During the height of Nintendo’s early-1990s popularity, however, Asmik was an up-and-coming publisher with ambition, an American branch, and a pink dinosaur for a mascot.

At first, Asmik didn’t have a name for the creature. He was “Asmik-Kun” in Japan, but that didn’t have the proper ring for North America. After a small contest, Asmik dubbed him “Boomer” (though Nintendo Power originally misidentified him as “Bronty”) and rolled out his first game: Boomer’s Adventure in Asmik World. It was a simple maze-walker for the Game Boy, and it failed to land Boomer any merchandising deals or Saturday morning TV contracts. In fact, this was Boomer’s only game released in North America. He endured as Asmik’s mascot, however, and the company’s NES and Game Boy releases show him on the packaging and title screens. By the time Asmik moved on to the Super NES, Boomer was gone.

Boomer’s Japanese species lasted a little longer, appearing in a second Game Boy puzzle-action game as well as a Famicom side-scroller titled Asmik-Kun Land. A low-effort entry, Asmik-Kun Land is notable mostly for Boomer’s oddly animated tail attack, which makes him look like he’s farting on enemies.

Last Known Whereabouts:

Asmik became Asmik Ace Entertainment after a 1997 merger, and the new company is far more devoted to film distribution and anime ventures than video games. If Boomer is anywhere, he’s buried deep with their storerooms.

Captain Commando

Captain Commando’s origins are curious. He was created not for a video game but for the packaging of Capcom’s early NES releases, dubbed the Captain Commando Challenge Series. Extrapolating his name from Capcom’s (which itself came from “Capsule Computer” arcade units), the Captain appeared on game boxes and in manuals, clad in the height of disco-superhero finery. Capcom’s American branch even fiddled with Section Z’s backstory to make Captain Commando the main character, though the in-game sprite was never edited to include his medallions and amazing Technicolor space-coat. Perhaps he wasn’t out of place on packaging that also turned Mega Man into an glowing, hunched abomination.

Capcom updated Captain Commando’s look for the next round of NES games, and so titles like Mega Man 2 and Strider bore a square-jawed, astronaut-pilot hero worthy of a B-movie Star Wars rip-off. The Captain Commando Challenge Series continued with this new icon and his unnamed blue space-monkey sidekick, though this new look lasted no longer than the first.

The Captain was redesigned again in 1991, when Capcom granted him his own game. A brawler much in the style of Final Fight, Captain Commando fashioned its title character into an anime superhero with his own crimefighting cadre, consisting of a Mummy Commando, a Ninja Commando, and a Baby Commando who pilots an adult-sized robot. While built with the same solid foundation as Capcom’s other beat-’em-ups of the day, Captain Commando is a rather routine journey with a violent detail or two (Mummy Commando’s attack dissolve enemies, and a promotional comic shows the game’s villains graphically murdering civilians). But this was the version of Captain Commando that would stick, and he looked much the same when he showed up in Marvel vs. Capcom and its sequel. He was no longer Capcom’s mascot, however. That role belongs to Mega Man–or at least it did until Capcom canceled his last two titles.

Last Known Whereabouts:

Captain Commando’s most recent playable role came in the strategy-RPG crossover of 2006′s Namco X Capcom.

The Secret World launching June 19th

The Secret World - launching June 19th
Funcom has decided to push back The Secret World's launch by a couple of months. The Norwegian development firm originally intended its horror-conspiracy MMO to ship in April, but a new press release has targeted June 19th instead.

Creative director Ragnar Tørnquist says the new launch window will allow Funcom to make the title that much more compelling. "Allowing for even more time to polish the game really shows just how much faith Funcom as a company has in The Secret World, and how committed we are to making it the best it can be," he explains.

Tørnquist also hints at further beta opportunities for both fans and curiosity seekers. "The additional time will also allow us to carry out even more quality beta testing, and soon we will also be announcing several public beta events where hundreds of thousands of gamers will get to test the game prior to launch," he says.

The Secret World is a skill-based MMO set in the modern age. It mixes traditional MMO progression with a unique skill deck system and story-driven questing.

    Otherland - Lambda Mall
It's been several months since we saw the first installment of RealU's making-of video series on the new Otherland MMO. Today the firm has released part two, and while the earlier clip was focused on the game's action elements, the latest one centers around Lambda Mall.

Lambda Mall is basically a futuristic version of the internet, and in the game it functions as a social and questing hub complete with shops, bars, and plenty of space for your avatars to mix and mingle. The video shows off quite a few locations throughout the sprawling space, as well as plenty of sci-fantasy cyberpunk visuals.

There's also a little preview of Otherland's character customization options toward the end of the clip. Feast your eyes after the cut.

ArenaNet has just released a new blog post to follow up its first Guild Wars 2 press beta weekend. Lead designer Eric Flannum says that the preview event went off without a hitch, and he also indicates that the dev team has a lot on its plate as it gears up to bring the game to a wider audience.

He starts things off with a look at Guild Wars 2's unique "downed" mode, which is basically a pre-death state wherein you have a limited selection of abilities to rally and potentially save yourself. The blog goes on to detail changes to the game's compass, tweaks to its meta-events, and an extensive look at the updates to boons and conditions. Head to the official ArenaNet website for all the details.

    RIFT - ascended wedding ceremony
Trion has announced the latest step in its plans for global domination, and it takes the form of a publishing agreement for the southeast Asian market. It was only a couple of weeks ago that RIFT landed the biggest MMO deal ever for a western title in the Chinese market, and now Trion's online fantasy brand will be available in Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand as well.

The company is partnering with Asiasoft to make it happen, and CEO Lars Buttler says it's another example of what sets his firm apart from the competition. "Trion has a global view when it comes to delivering premium games, and our initiatives to bring RIFT to Asia through some of the industry's biggest collaborations sets Trion apart from other Western game developers."

      ArcheAge - a pirate's life for me
Fancy being a pirate in the fantasy world of ArcheAge? You can, and all it takes is a ship and a crew of your best mates.

A new player-made video shows off the game's naval combat potential, and the clip is basically three minutes of jaw-dropping PvP action. There's plenty of carnage courtesy of player-manned ship cannons and destructible hulls, and we can also see combatants crossing swords on the decks of enemy ships (if you look closely you'll catch a glimpse of a player using a hang-glider to travel from one ship to the next).

The video also gives us a good look at ArcheAge's functional ship rigging, and you can see players unfurling sails, interacting with various ship controls, and even climbing a mast to the crow's nest. Check it out after the break.

Jagex CEO predicts the imminent demise of physical game retailers

      Posted: 21 Feb 2012 06:30 AM PST

Brick-and-mortar outlets, be warned: your days are numbered. Or so says Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard, who told an audience at BAFTA Question Time that physical retailers were living on borrowed time -- and that before long, such stores would be "museum pieces."

Gerhard says that these retailers, such as UK's GAME, will be gone within a decade. "The writing has been on the wall for quite some time," he said. "I think, 10 years out from now, we'll be talking about [physical] retail nostalgically, as a museum piece."

He sees this as a positive development for the industry, saying that retailers take a slice of profits away from studios and make it hard for indie games to succeed. "People are still playing games. They're still doing business; they're just doing it in a different place. If you don't adapt you die. It's as simple as that," he said.

Queue no more thanks to Guild Wars 2's overflow servers

      Posted: 21 Feb 2012 06:00 AM PST

      Guild Wars 2
Picture this: You've just come home from a hard day of work and you want to relax by gaming and perhaps responsibly enjoying a delicious beverage. But wait -- there's a queue for your server! What are you going to do? You could reroll and get into the game faster, but then you can't play with your friends on your precious main character. You can also sit it out and just twiddle your thumbs for a bit, but otherwise there's not a lot to be done. Or at least, there wasn't until Guild Wars 2 got into the picture.

Martin Kerstein, ArenaNet's community team lead, stopped by the Guild Wars 2 Guru forums to give players a peek at the title's server overflow feature. With this feature, the above scenario plays out a bit differently. When there's too much traffic on one server, your character will be temporarily sent to a different server. Once you've reached the front of the queue, you'll be asked if you want to transfer back to your original server, and voila: home, sweet home. Any progress made on the overflow server will be carried back to the home server, so you can even be productive while you're waiting in a queue. How's that for efficiency?

Wargaming.net is making it easier than ever to stay in touch with your friends and goals in World of Tanks, as the studio released its first mobile app that's integrated with the online game. Called World of Tanks Assistant, this free app can be found in the iTunes Store, although an Android version is coming soon.

The World of Tanks Assistant is designed to give players access to in-game information while they're on the go. Players can access their profiles, read up on the latest news, check out combat stats and global ratings, and stay in touch with friends.

Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi hopes that this will be a useful tool for WoT fans: "What I like about the Assistant most is its convenience. Even if you're away from your computer, there's always an app at hand that will give you everything you need to know at any given time."

League of Legends discussed the Chinese community this week as part of its World Tour series. Dota 2 delivered three weeks worth of beta updates at once, including a new single draft game mode and matchmaking system. Heroes of Newerth released its latest hero this week, the fire-breathing dragon Draconis, who has massive farming capabilities. Rise of Immortals launched its latest immortal Kaos, a seemingly mortal US Marine lost in the game's fantasy land.

Diablo III took another step toward release this week by finalising a replacement for the scrapped rune stone system and cutting socketable runes from the list of potential features at the same time. Torchlight II teased players with six new screenshots, and Path of Exile discussed the design process behind the game's unique items. Finally, Blacklight: Retribution announced its public open beta, which is due to start next week.

Next TERA CBT weekend brings level cap increase, new dungeon, and PvP

          TERA artwork -- Sinestral Manor
Here we are at the beginning of another week which TERA fans are certain to be anxiously waiting to end because this weekend marks the game's second North American closed beta weekend. During the last test, players got to experience the game's PvE content all the way up to level 22, including the Bastion of Lok instance. Well, this time around En Masse Entertainment is going to be opening up the gates to five additional levels of content, allowing players to progress to level 27. Testers will also gain access to a new dungeon known as Sinestral Manor, and each player will get two character slots per server rather than just one.

Oh, and speaking of servers, we hear there's going to be a new one. Players will be able to test their skills against one another on Valley of Trials, the new PvP server. To top it off, En Masse has also revealed a bit of new information on how PvP combat will work. Open-world combat will be initiated when a player uses an ability known as Outlaw Declaration, which does what it says on the tin: It declares the caster an outlaw, allowing him to attack (and presumably, be attacked by) other players for 60 seconds or until combat is over. But single combat isn't the only way to get your PvP fix. Guilds can also declare war on other guilds by using the item Bahaar's Spark of War Declaration, which can be purchased in capital cities. After war has been declared, members of opposing guilds will be able to attack one another on sight.

So there you have it, folks. That's what we've got to look forward to this next beta weekend. We hope to see you all on the battlefield.

          Twinkle, twinkle, little patch,
How I wonder where you're at?
In the East they play with ease,
In the West you're just a tease!
          Twinkle, twinkle, three point oh,
Hurry please I want you so!

I've tried to be patient. I really have. I even avoided any wayward glances at Aion's Korean patch notes (translated, of course) for 3.0. That way, I could contain my excitement a little better. I mean, we already know I am dying for housing, and I also know mounts are involved. But there is always so much more, and I was trying to make the wait more bearable. I stood firm in my resolve.

Then I broke down. I peeked. And oh how the many-tendriled beast of anticipation took hold of me once again! Of course there is always the requisite "fixed this bug" and "changed that appearance" filler, but when mining deeper, you also find some definite valuable nuggets. Aion's next patch has some "how cool," some "oh wow, that's really unexpected," and some "about time!" thrown in as well. From new zones to new instances to new features, there is plenty coming our way. Don't want to tax your scroll wheel and sift through the entire patch notes yourself? Wings Over Atreia delves in to uncover some of the most tantalizing treasures for you.

What's next for BioWare's Arnie Jorgensen, Alex Thomas, and John Watson? A new RPG/RTS hybrid called The Banner Saga, according to Kotaku.

The trio spent the past half decade slaving away on Star Wars: The Old Republic, and now they're striking out on their own to make an indie title described as "roleplaying meets turn-based strategy, wrapped into an adventure miniseries about vikings."

Watson was SWTOR's lead combat programmer, while Thomas and Jorgensen filled the senior environment artist and lead concept artist roles, respectively. The trio has formed an indie studio called Stoic, and the company's maiden offering is apparently "coming soon."

If you've got an active Mortal Onlne account, you may want to think seriously about changing your password. A new post on the sandbox title's forum describes a security breach that led to the destruction of in-game assets and account status changes. The intrusion has since been contained, according to a Star Vault GM, and "additional security is in place."

The company says that customer payment information was not affected, but users are encouraged to verify their account status and passwords anyway.

As to the breach itself, details are understandably scarce, but Star Vault does say that a member of the GM staff had his account compromised and his details used to carry out the aforementioned mischief.
