Microsoft Loses Head of Developer Experiences for Windows Phone To Amazon Kindle

Posted: 05 Feb 2012 01:12 PM PST

BrandonWindows Phone has struggled to differentiate itself in the market against established rivals such as Android and iOS, but through it all Brandon Watson was the developer evangelist making sure a lack of apps was never the reason people opted for the competition. His commitment to platform has helped to inspire app development beyond Redmond's wildest expectations, however ZDnet blogger Mary Jo Foley has just confirmed that Brandon is moving on, and being tasked with leading Amazon's cross-platform Kindle efforts.

So far Microsoft hasn't named any successor for Watson, and did little more than confirm his departure. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, "We can confirm February 6th is Brandon Watson's last day at Microsoft. Brandon did a great job helping us build a vibrant developer community and we wish him well with his next adventure."

Watson's departure isn't the first, and likely won't be the last important loss to the Windows Phone team, but its still a mighty blow to a platform that is in desperate need of passionate community leaders.

Facebook Estimates The Personal Information of 845 Million Users is Worth $75 Billion

Posted: 05 Feb 2012 12:37 PM PST

FacebookThe Facebook IPO is not just long awaited, but one of the most interesting public offerings of our generation. Unlike the countless tech companies that came before it, Facebook doesn't offer anything tangible; rather it's simply a platform to help share our private information. This week however we've learned ultimately what the market valued this type of service at, and it's a staggering $75 billion right out of the gate

The fillings revealed that Facebook is still far behind advertising market leaders such as Google when it comes to monetizing the value of it's users, but Wall Street as we know doesn't only reward immediate financial performance, rather they consider what's possible given the platform. Facebook made about $3.2 billion in advertising revenue last year, which while accounting for 85 percent of it's total, is still only a small fraction of the $36.5 billion Google took in during the same period.

The big take away this week is that our personal information is worth a fortune in the right hands, and now that Facebook has finally gone public, you should expect them to start exploiting that value much more aggressively going forward. From the looks of it, they've only just scratched the surface.

LibreOffice Attracts Over 400 Contributors, Thousands of Code Commits

TDF

Google Docs and Office Web apps have gone a long way towards offering a compelling solution for storing our documents online, but for those in need of offline access, Open Office used to be the best free alterative to Microsoft around. Fast forward to 2012 however, and Open Office hasn't just fallen off the map, it has been lapped several times by a new community fork called LibreOffice

According to new statistics offered up by the community, LibreOffice monthly commits is now in the 1500-3000 range, with the vast majority of new code coming from TDF volunteers, as opposed to large corporations such has Red Hat, Oracle, or Canonical.

The LibreOffice community is also celebrating over 10 million users, a significant milestone for a project that only launched in late 2010. With version 3.5 just around the corner promising tons of improvements sometime next week, the future of LibreOffice is looking very bright indeed.

Yakuza: Dead Souls Wants to be Every Zombie Game

Posted: 05 Feb 2012 07:13 AM PST

When I was in junior high school (centuries ago), I always found the metalhead clique at my school intimidating. Rangy boys with long, oily hair and a collective uniform consisting of boots, black-washed jeans, and black T-shirts imprinted with art from album covers by bands whose names bore gratuitous double consonants and lent themselves to harsh, angular logo designs, the metalheads always hung out together at the side of gym class, discussing their heroes’ latest wailing guitar concoctions and glowering at the rest of the world. They sported the shifty desperation unique to 14-year-olds jonesing for a drag on a stolen cigarette.

It was all kind of alarming for us clean-cut students whose main ambition for gym class was to avoid notice by the jocks and dropouts while hanging out on the sidelines discussing the latest Zelda strategies with each other (dude, if you just keep going up when you get to that one spot in the mountains, there’s a dungeon there!). In hindsight, though, I realize that the metalhead kids were harmless. They never picked on anyone; they never caused trouble outside of skipping class to hang out and listen to noisy music. They were as geeky as the video-game-fixated A-students; the only difference between us was that their obsessions were wrapped up in an affected antisocial style. Their music may have been about volume and screaming and satanic posturing, but it was just that: Posturing. Underneath it all, those guys just wanted to do their own thing, and they wore their ragged Dokken shirts with pride because they sincerely thought that airbrushed zombie warriors chained to naked, guitar-wielding sex slaves was, like, so awesome.

Firefall

Posted: 05 Feb 2012 01:26 AM PST

(Beta signup) Yesterday, Shacknews posted a video interview with Red 5 Studios’ CEO, Mr Mark Kern on the company’s maiden MMO, Firefall (link). Earlier today, a 2nd interview video was posted (source), this time with the latest recruit to join Red 5, Morgan Romine. Assuming a role as the focus of Firefall’s e-Sports (competitive gaming), she is otherwise known as the founder of Frag Dolls, perhaps the most famous all-female gaming team in the industry. Check out the video on what she has to say!

Star Trek Online

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 06:56 PM PST

(Register now) Remember a few months back when Perfect World bought over Cryptic Studios (link)? Well, the transition has slowly but surely began, as the developer’s original games are now all Free to Play (F2P), with Star Trek Online the latest to join the bandwagon.

I guess I will be giving the game a shot early next week, as I have not played the game myself. Will it be worth the time, especially since I am getting on age and becoming extremely choosy? We shall see. For the differences between a paying and non-paying player, you can see the comparison chart here (link).

Cons: -Minimal character customization. -Poor interface. -Limited control over graphic options. -Clumsy controls.

ArchLord is a PvP heavy3D Fantasy MMORPG. The game was originally released as a pay to play game in North America in October 2006 and has since been re-released as a free to play game. The game originally released with terribly poor game reviews by nearly all large game critics upon launch, but the game has since evolved considerablly and is now well worth checking out. The is currently on it's third major content updated called 'Spirits Awakening' and there are surely more to come. The game's playable classes are:

Humans

Knight - Knights are the generic 'warrior' archetype. They are the most proficient melee characters and have the largest pool of hit points.
Archer - Archers are capable of dealing damage quickly from a distance but are vulnerable in melee combat.
Mage – Mages are the standard offensive spell caster in ArchLord. They are capable of dealing massive amounts of damage incredibly quickly but are extremely vulnerable to melee attacks, as they have the least hit points in the game.

Orcs

Berserker - Berserkers are similar to human knights, in that they are the primary melee class of the 'orc' race. Unlike knights though, they are better at dealing damage quickly, but they sacrifice some defensive capabilities for this benefit.
Sorcerer - Sorcerers are the 'mage' of the Orcs. They are capable of casting deadly spells and killing their enemies from a distance, but they are incredibly vulnerable to melee attacks as they have incredibly low hit points and low defense.
Hunter – Hunters are the 'Archers' of the Orc race. They are extremely agile and are capable of dealing damage from a distance with the use of a bow. They are however, vulnerable to melee combat.

Moon Elves

Elementalist - Elementalists are perhaps the most powerful 'magician' class in the game, as their spells tend to be a bit more powerful than their Human and Orc counterparts. But unlike the other two races, Moon Elves can only select two classes while the others can select three.
Ranger – Rangers are the equivalent of 'archers' for the Moon Elf race. They can deal damage quickly from a distance using their ranged weaponry, but they are vulnerable to melee attacks.

OS: Windows 2000 / XP / Vista
CPU: Pentium or Athlon 800 MHz

TERA's EU sneak peek weekend canceled due to unknown technical fault

TERA title image
Upcoming fantasy MMO TERA has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons, from controversial IP blocking to NCSoft's ongoing lawsuit against developers En Masse Entertainment. Today we add another story to the growing list of problems plaguing TERA as its European sneak peek weekend has collapsed due to unknown technical issues. Though a limited number of preview keys were given out for the event, the game and login servers broke down shortly after the preview got underway.

The event that fans were looking forward to has now been canceled, with no date for a restart yet announced. The official TERA Europe Facebook page confirms that "The cancellation was not due to load problems caused by the large number of potential players," but was unable to shed any light on what caused the fault or when the sneak peek event would resume. With the game's US launch set for May 1st and its European launch shortly after on May 3rd, we can only hope that these problems are ironed out soon.

[Thanks for the tip, Phil!]

The Daily Grind: Do you think there's too much group mentality in MMO discussion?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2012 05:00 AM PST

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, IMMERSION IS DEAD, TRAMMEL WAS AN ABOMINATION, TALLY-HO AND ALL THAT!
When it comes to MMO design, people tend toward certain viewpoints. Some players think that immersion requires an open world, open PvP, and open targets; others think it just requires an interesting story and a player willing to invest. There are people who think that cash shops are a short step toward buying your way through content, and there are those who think cash shops are a great way to get some more gumballs for a game you like. In the broadest terms, there's a sense of an old guard and a new guard, but there's a lot of overlap and a lot that depends on personal viewpoints.

In some ways, this can be helpful for discussion -- knowing that someone really prefers old sandbox games like Ultima Online means that you know right off said person won't enjoy DC Universe Online, for instance. But it also means that we're far more likely to ignore the opinions of others because they dislike certain mechanics, even if they raise valid points. So do you think there's too much of a focus on "old guard" vs. "new guard" when talking about design?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Noria and gPotato release new Sevencore trailer

      Posted: 04 Feb 2012 05:00 PM PST

      Sevencore - dragon mount
Last summer we showed you a couple of trailers for a new Korean free-to-play import called Sevencore. The title is an interesting mixture of fantasy and sci-fi, and it is also the product of an alliance between development firm Noria and publishing partner gPotato. The game's Korean open beta is close at hand, and the two companies have released a new cinematic trailer to drum up some interest.

Click past the cut for your daily dose of fantasy violence, brooding male voiceovers, and orchestral action-movie music. There are also a few glimpses of Sevencore's unique mounts, including a fire-breathing dragon and some sort of swoop analog that we'd love to take for a spin.

The Mog Log: One year, two courses

The Mog Log header by A. Fienemann
Today does not quite mark the two-year anniversary of The Mog Log. That was back on January 24th, but I decided to run just a wee bit late with annual retrospectives. We're now close enough to the year mark for argument's sake, which gives me a chance to look back at how the past year of the column has shaken out, what's gone right, and what hasn't. That ties into the issue that one invariably finds when a single column covers two games: There's a split.

Whether or not you like Final Fantasy XIV, you can't argue that the past year has brought an onslaught of changes to the game. On the flip side, there's been less going on in Final Fantasy XI than in any of the game's previous years of operation. As a result, I've had a difficult dilemma to try to juggle: There's one game moving at high speed and one staying rather stagnant, but I don't want to give undue attention to one over the other.

Captain's Log: A year in review

        Posted: 04 Feb 2012 01:00 PM PST

        ESD @nd Anniversary
Another year has passed for Star Trek Online, and it can be described as tumultuous at best.

It was a year that contained very little story-based content provided by the developer, Cryptic Studios, as it was put through the proverbial ringer -- first by being sold off, and second by being purchased in the midst of what many believed was the game's most critical year.

With the focus that many players (including me) had on the lack of new missions in 2011, it was easy to gloss over what material did get released despite the challenges the strangle-held teams at Cryptic were facing.

The game has gone free-to-play, there are visibly more players than have ever been seen before, the development team seems to be settling in to a new owner's house, and the second anniversary is upon us, so it's time to take a good look back to see what was released over the course of the last year.

The Tattered Notebook: New executive producer, new wishlist

          Georgeson and Longdale
I was all set to sit down and talk about raiding and the big news of critical mitigation disappearing from gear, and then some even bigger news appeared. Executive Producer Dave "SmokeJumper" Georgeson has handed the reins over to Holly "Windstalker" Longdale. She is new to take the lead on EverQuest II, but she's not new to the team; in fact, she worked on EverQuest in the past under the name Vahlar.

What's the first thing to do when there's a new leader taking over? Form a wish list, of course! EverQuest II has come a long way since its bumpy launch, but there's always stuff that would make the game that much more fun. Let's look at a few ideas, and then you can add yours to my list.
