DMCA Exemption for Jailbreaking Set to Expire, EFF Needs Your Help

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 07:51 PM PST

ip barsBack in 2010, the Library of Congress issued a rulemaking statement that exempted jailbreaking, rooting, and otherwise unlocking mobile devices from DMCA anti-circumvention laws. For all intents and purposes, this made these activities completely legal, and stopped Apple from making all those threats against the jailbreak community. In 2012, that exemption is set to expire unless it is renewed, and the EFF wants to make sure that it is.

The DMCA technically states that bypassing any kind of encryption of copy protection is illegal, but the Copyright Office in the Library of Congress periodically reviews things and allows exceptions as it did in 2010. If the ruling is not renewed, jailbreaking and rooting will again become a shady underground activity, and could be suppressed by manufacturers. The EFF is asking people to submit statements in support of the exemption before it's too late.

In addition to renewing the smartphone/tablet rules, the EFF is seeking to have video game consoles added to the list of exempted devices. We all remember the case against noted modder GeoHot brought by Sony after he successfully jailbroke the PS3. Are you going to go out on a limb and support the DMCA exemption?

Rumor: Quad-Core Samsung Galaxy S III to Hit Store Shelves in April

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 04:21 PM PST

Millions of smartphone users around the globe swear by Samsung's Galaxy line, with the original Galaxy S and it's dual-core successor Galaxy S II boasting combined lifetime sales of over 30 million units. Considering the fact that the S II made its international debut around nine months back and its U.S. debut as recently as late September, there does not seem to be a very strong case for a successor at this time. However, Samsung is widely expected to unveil the next phone in its flagship smartphone family in the near future, something that makes sense given the launch history of the Galaxy series.

To further build on those expectations, we now have a fresh rumor that hints at a Mobile World Congress (MWC) unveiling for the S III (or whatever it will be called). This rumor comes to us all the way from Russia. Eldar Murtazin, a Russian tech blogger known for being well connected, has tweeted about the S III having HD resolution, 12MP camera, software tweaks and Android 4.0. He also claimed that the device has a 1.5-1.6GHz quad-core processor. If he is to be believed -- a difficult thing considering his track record, then the Galaxy S III will be unveiled next month at MWC in Barcelona, with the device making its commercial debut in April.

As far as the specs are concerned, there is nothing that we haven't heard before. As for the MWC launch, most people would probably say the same if they had to make an educated guess. But since nothing has been confirmed as yet, we would advise you to take it with a grain of salt.

HP Begins Releasing webOS Source Code

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 02:49 PM PST

hpTrue to its word, HP has officially started releasing the webOS source code. The company said late last year that it would open source the mostly-failed platform so the community could continue to work on it. HP itself has pledged to continue contributing to the project as well. Today's release included the Enyo application framework, and the rest of the platform will be released over the coming months, with a few surprises along the way.

The version of Enyo released is actually the new 2.0 build. This version is browser independent, allowing developers more freedom in application design. Enyo 1.0 was tied to WebKit. The PC maker plans to apply th Apache 2.0 license to the source code later this month. Next month HP hopes to get The JavaScript core of webOS out, and a standard Linux kernel for webOS in March. Switching to a standard Linux kernel like Android uses will expand device compatibility down the line. The core apps and system manager will be out sometime this summer, culminating with the final Open webOS 1.0 release around September.

HP also says it is still looking at all existing webOS devices to see if updates are feasible. The TouchPad seems sure to live on, but perhaps even Pre, Pixi, and Veer owners have a shot. What do you see in Open webOS' future?

Motorola Sues Apple Over iPhone 4S, iCloud

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 02:35 PM PST

scalesMotorola filed a new patent infringement suit of its own against Apple today, and it targets the iPhone 4S and iCloud. Motorola cites six patents that it has used against Apple before as proof of Apple's infringement. Interestingly, Google's merger agreement with Motorola prohibits the later from filing any new patent suits without getting permission from Google first. Presumably, this means Google gave Moto the go-ahead to sue Apple.

The patents cover various bits of cellular technology, including hidden antenna design, data filtering, and "pager status" sync. The last technology, related to cellular radios, has been at the center of Motorola's German infringement suit. This patent is seen as very strong, and has been upheld in the German case. Motorola also successfully defended itself in the ITC from a recent Apple lawsuit.

Motorola could be looking to make a quick buck while the Google acquisition continues to worm its way through regulatory agencies. In the not too distant future, it might be Google and Apple themselves at war as the Motorola proxy is absorbed by Google.

Symantec Investigates Stolen Source Code, Recommends Disabling pcAnywhere

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 12:19 PM PST

Less than three weeks ago, security firm Symantec publicly downplayed the theft of a portion of its source code and said the stolen bits were from a 2006 enterprise version of its software. The message at the time was that the theft didn't affect Symantec's Norton products for consumer customers, nor were enterprise users as risk. In other words, chillax. Now Symantec is making the unusual recommendation of telling people not to use its pcAnywhere software.

In a white paper (PDF) published today, Symantec indicated that users of pcAnywhere are at increased risk, and the risk goes up for customers not following general security best practices.

"General security best practices include endpoint, network, remote access, and physical security, as well as configuring pcAnywhere in a way that minimizes potential risks," Symantec stated in its white paper. "At this time, Symantec recommends disabling the product until Symantec releases a final set of software updates that resolve currently known vulnerability risks. For customers that require pcAnywhere for business critical purposes, it is recommended that customers understand the current risks, ensure pcAnywhere 12.5 is installed, apply all relevant patches as they are released, and follow the general security best practices discussed herein."

H.D. Moore, chief architect of Metaspolit, a platform that helps IT professionals identify security issues, told Reuters that it's "pretty much unheard of to just say 'Stop using it.' Especially a vendor as large as Symantec." Be that as it may, the temporary halt Symantec recommends is a temporary measure until it can roll out a patch, presumably soon.

Future Tense: 3DTV Redux

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 12:15 PM PST

I saw my first 3D movie in 1953. It was House Of Wax, starring Vincent Price, Phyllis Kirk, Carolyn Jones, and featured a pretty scary newcomer named Charles Bronson. It was directed by Andre de Toth, who ironically only had one good eye.

To this day, it remains one of my favorite 3D movies, and I wish Warner Bros. would get off their butts and release it on 3D Blu-Ray, perhaps a double set with Phantom Of The Rue Morgue, starring Karl Malden. I'd also like Universal to release a box set of The Creature From The Black Lagoon, Revenge Of The Creature, The Creature Walks Among Us (not in 3D) and It Came From Outer Space.

There are a lot of other classic films made in 3D that deserve to be released on Blu-Ray: Kiss Me Kate, Dial M For Murder (directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Grace Kelly and Ray Milland), Money From Home (Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis), The French Line (Jane Russell), Miss Sadie Thompson (Rita Hayworth, Jose Ferrer), and more.

Most of the negatives still survive and a set of good Blu-Ray transfers would find a home on the shelves of many 3D enthusiasts. A lot of the 3D films made in the fifties were pretty miserable, nothing more than hasty exploitation efforts, but there are still some that have earned a place in history as an important artifact of the time. I'd include Cat Women Of The Moon and Robot Monster on that list—particularly Robot Monster which is arguably one of the worst movies ever made, but its 3D was some of the best. Go figure.

Over a year ago, I wrote in this space that 3D TV is inevitable in the home theater market. I still feel that way, and I'll explain why—

But first let me acknowledge the inevitable complaints that are going to show up in the comment thread. "I can't see 3D" "It's a gimmick" "It's just another way for the big corporations to loot my wallet" "It's a fad" "I don't like it" "It's too expensive" "It doesn't work well" "It gives me a headache" "I don't like the goofy glasses" and "I don't want to be bothered." "The technology isn't perfect yet." These complaints show up in every comment thread about 3D TV and they will probably show up here as well.

I'm not dismissing the complaints. They are real for the people who are complaining. Nevertheless, many people do like 3D TV and despite many justifiable objections and concerns, 3D TV is inevitable.

First of all, any TV with a refresh rate of 120hz is 3D capable. You might not buy a TV for its 3D capability, but all the high-end sets now have refresh rates of 120hz or 240hz. Some manufacturers are even flirting with 480hz. Plasma sets have 600hz refresh rates. It costs little for the manufacturer to add an emitter and advertise the set as 3D ready. You might not want a 3D set, but when you buy your next big screen TV, the top of the line models will all be 3D capable, and that feature is steadily working its way down the product line, with more and more sets having that capability every year.

There are two kinds of 3D TVs, passive and active. Passive sets use circular polarized glasses, the same kind you'd use for a Real-3D presentation. But such sets interleave the scan lines, so odd-numbered scan lines go to one eye and even-numbered scan lines go to the other. On a 1080P set, you're only getting 540 scan lines to each eye, half the hi-def resolution. Some people can see the scan lines, others sit far enough back and don't notice them.

More common are sets that use active-shutter glasses. These glasses are a little heavier and need to be recharged every 70 hours. The TV alternates left and right eye images and the glasses are synchronized by an RF or infra-red emitter, so each eye sees the correct eye image at 60 frames per second.

There is some light loss in both systems, but not significant, and you can always pump up the brightness. Polarized sets are less prone to ghosting or double-images. Active shutter sets have greater resolution.

A justifiable concern for any 3D fan is that source material remains limited and some of it just isn't worth the effort. And some of the travelogues have artifacts where the depth effect gets confused if there is fast sideways motion. I suspect it has something to do with the way the image is encoded and delivered. I also expect that this will eventually be resolved as the technology continues to improve.

Most 3D Blu-Ray movies look good on a home screen, several have been spectacular.  DirecTV has five 3D channels. They repeat a lot of the material, but they're also increasing the variety every month. DirecTV has also been showing 3D movies on a pay-per-view channel.  So if you're a 3D enthusiast, you do have an increasing menu of films to watch, with more being released every month.

If you're going to get a new set—3D or not—get the biggest screen you can afford, especially if you want a theatrical experience. The bigger your screen, the more dramatic the effect—especially for 3D. 1080p 3D projectors are also becoming affordable and would allow you to fill a whole wall. So far, these are all active-shutter. (There are companies that will set up two projectors in sync so you can use polarized glasses too.)

Right now, 3D TV is mostly in the homes of early adopters and enthusiasts. Given the state of the economy, it's likely to remain that way for another year or two, maybe even longer. But that gives manufacturers an opportunity to continue improving the technology and studios to expand the number of available films in release. The big studios have recognized that having a 3D release of a film can add as much as 40% to the box office gross. A 3D film is kind of like going on a dark ride at an amusement park, it has an "event" quality. So most of the major pictures planned the summer season and the holiday season will have a 3D release.

Remember, the studios, the theaters, and the TV manufacturers have invested billions into 3D technology. The box office numbers justify continuing that investment for the theaters. It's going to take a lot longer for the home market to catch up because the operative equation is always the availability of content and the availability of hardware on which to view the content, but as more and more event films have 3D releases on Blu-Ray, as more and more Blu-Ray players and sets arrive in homes, 3D capability will continue to spread.

As long as 3D requires "the goofy glasses" it will exist in its own kind of specialty niche—the same way laserdiscs existed in the eighties. The laserdisc never became mainstream, but it had a strong enough customer base to justify a large library of releases. 3D TV that requires glasses will never replace HDTV as we have it today. But having a set with 3D capability will make it more likely that you will watch "event television" and selected movies in 3D.

Titanic and Star Wars are being re-released in 3D. The next Star Trek movie is (allegedly) planned for 3D. Those audiences will turn out and they will very likely buy the 3D discs for their home libraries as well. Someday the Super Bowl or the Rose Parade will be broadcast in 3D and you can bet a lot of people will pull out their 3D glasses for that. Perhaps hit shows like Glee or Big Bang Theory or Hawaii Five-O will someday shoot special episodes in 3D and fans of those shows will turn on their 3D channels just for that.

After nearly eight years of success in the theaters and with a growing number of 3D films released every year, and many more scheduled, I think it's fair to say that 3D has found its audience and become a mainstream format in its own right. I expect that the same audience that loves 3D movies will also embrace 3D for the home-theater experience. It's just going to take a while.

Nokia Lumia 900 Reportedly Shipping March 18, Aggressively Priced at $100

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 11:52 AM PST

It's not unusual for a high-end smartphone to command $300 on a subsidized contract, and there are certainly a great number of powerful devices priced at $200. Word on the Web is that Nokia's upcoming Lumia 900 smartphone will run just $100 at AT&T with a two-year service agreement, and if that's true, kudos are in order for both Nokia and AT&T for such an aggressive launch.

Boy Genius Report first broke news of the release date and $100 price tag after supposedly receiving a portion of AT&T's 2012 roadmap from what it considers a "trusted source." Those seem to be a dime a dozen on the Web these days, but its information was corroborated by CNet, which is reporting the same information, which it obtained from "sources with knowledge of the launch."

This could be a big deal for Microsoft and the Windows Phone platform. Nokia's Lumia 900 is arguably the first WP device to really get excited about. It has a 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED screen, 16GB of internal storage, 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, 4G LTE, and a first-class 8MP camera with Carl-freaking-Zeiss optics, all of which will come wrapped in Windows Phone 7.5. At only $100, and perhaps even less on sites like WireFly, this could be the shot-in-the-arm Microsoft needs to push its mobile OS further into the mainstream.

BlizzCon Benched in 2012, Will Return to Action in 2013

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 11:35 AM PST

We have some bad news to relay to raucous gamers who were looking forward to running wild at BlizzCon this year. Blizzard Entertainment today announced there will be no BlizzCon 2012 because it's so "heavily focused on getting Diablo III, Mists of Pandaria, and Heart of the Swarm into players' hands as soon as possible." BlizzCon will, however, return in 2013.

The cancellation of BlizzCon was really just a footnote to Blizzard's announcement of the 2012 Battle.net World Championship. It's slated to take place in Asia toward the end of 2012 and will host this year's StarCarft II and World of Warcraft Arena World Championship tournaments, Blizzard said in a blog post on Battle.net. Specific dates and locations will be revealed in the coming months.

While fans of BlizzCon will understandably be bummed about the no-show in 2012, if it means Diablo III will finally see the light of day, then perhaps it's well worth it. It's fair to say Diablo III is one of the more anticipated titles of 2012, which will ship when Blizzard is good and ready.

WikiLeaks Founder Promises "Controversial Voices" On Upcoming TV Series

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 11:31 AM PST

Love it or hate it, you have to admit one thing about WikiLeaks: trying to read hundreds of thousands of leaked documents can sure put a strain on your peepers.  Leak lovers won't have to battle eye strain for too much longer, however. WikiLeaks recently announced that Julian Assange, the controversial man behind the controversial site, will host a ten episode TV show about "The world tomorrow" starting in March.

"(As) a pioneer for a more just world and a victim of political repression… Assange will draw together controversial voices from across the political spectrum - iconoclasts, visionaries and power insiders - each to offer a window on the world tomorrow and their ideas on how to secure a brighter future," the announcement crows.

WikiLeaks is (somewhat ironically) keeping mum about the finer details of the show for now: there's no word on who's making the show or which channels will air it. However, each episode is slated to be a half-hour long, and WikiLeaks claims that "Initial licensing commitments cover over 600 million viewers across cable, satellite and terrestrial broadcast networks."

How to Sideload Android Apps

Posted: 25 Jan 2012 11:22 AM PST

You've found that hot new app on the Android Market, and you can't wait to click the Install button. But you're getting the message that the app isn't compatible with your device. Being the good Maximum user that you are, you'd rather find out for yourself. Those messages are sometimes wrong, after all. Or perhaps you want to take advantage of the daily giveaways in the Amazon Appstore. Or, if you're one of the millions of Kindle Fire owners, you may want more choices than the limited Amazon Appstore provides. All of the above comprise sufficient reason to start sideloading apps to your Android device.

Step 1: Get Some Apps to Sideload

The reason you sideload apps in the first place is because you're sourcing them from a place other than the sanctioned method, which is usually the Android Market or some device-specific boutique app store. Android Apps come in the form of .apk files. You can procure such files from a prior device backup, straight from a developer's website, and of course from… the Internet (you know the deal).

Next, transfer those .apk files from your PC to your Android however you like: on a microSD card (image above), through a cloud service such as Dropbox, via a USB transfer, etc. Just remember what directory those files end up in, so you don't have to root through too many folders looking for them later.

Step 2: Tweak Applications Settings

The default setting in Android is to not allow the installation of non-Market applications. Fie on that! Go to your Android device's Settings, and under Applications, check the "Unknown sources" box (image below), allowing you, in effect, to sideload. Some unfortunate souls may have tyrannical devices that have modded the Android OS to not allow sideloading at all, in which case they'll have to look into rooting the device or installing custom Android ROMs. But that's a whole other How To.

Step 3: Install the Apps Through a File Manager

To install your .apk apps, you essentially launch the files through a file manager app. Many Android devices come with a file manager preloaded. For the rest, there are tons of file managers out there and a good handful of high-quality free ones. If you have access to the Android Market, like most Android users, we like Metago's Astro File Manager or Rhythm Software's File Manager HD for Honeycomb tablets. For folks locked into the Amazon Appstore (users of the Grid10, Kindle Fire, etc.), we prefer ES File Explorer.

Because you heeded our warning to remember what folder your .apk's are in, you just need to launch your file manager and find them (image above). If they're on a microSD card, you'll probably need to hit the file manager's Up button a couple of times to find the "Removable" directory. Touching an .apk icon will open the Package Installer, where you can touch the Install button to finish the deed (image below). Now that app, whether it will function properly or not, is ready to launch. Enjoy the sweet freedom of the gray market!

Age of Conan's Craig Morrison talks conquest vs. competition

Age of Conan concept art
PvP is a naturally contentious subject, particularly when focused on its various flavors in the MMO space. Everyone thinks they know best, and whether they're arguing for a three-faction system, full loot, or open-world objectives, the discussion often devolves into verbal throw-downs every bit as violent as their in-game counterparts.

Age of Conan game director Craig Morrison recently waded into the fray via his personal blog, and he says that defining PvP in an MMO context involves separating the wish for conquest from the wish for competition.

Morrison touches on several interesting aspects of MMO PvP, including a bit of history relating to the arenas and battlegrounds that are usually reviled by hardcore player types. "The needs of accessibility dictated that designers try and find a way to accommodate the appeal of the conquest style of play while also retaining the fairness of the competitive desires of the players," he explains.

Ultimately, Morrison offers a bit of hope for those who prefer open-world conflict. "It's great to finish a great story and storm the castle and beat the bad guy. It is something else altogether to get to keep his castle, and for you to become the bad guy for the next would-be hero to try and conquer," he says.

Fans of GSC Gameworld's S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series got a tad bit excited this morning as new gameplay footage from the IP surfaced on YouTube. As it turns out, the video is from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Online (yes, really), which is an MMO being developed by CyberTime Systems using its proprietary BigWorld game engine.

Apparently the title has been in the works for a while, and an ongoing open beta phase is currently available in Russia. VG24/7 reports that there is a multi-language pack in the works, but until it's ready you'll need to bone up on your language skills if you want to participate.

For the uninitiated, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a series of post-apocalyptic single-player titles that mix first-person shooter action with sandbox RPG elements. Head past the break to check out the gameplay footage.

War Thunder: World of Planes - PBY Catalina
Gaijin has renamed its forthcoming aviation-centric World War II action MMO. The title was formerly called World of Planes (not to be confused with World of Warplanes), but will henceforth be known as War Thunder: World of Planes.

The official website has been redesigned to reflect the change, and most interestingly, Gaijin states that aviation is no longer the title's sole focus. "This name change is significant because the online multiplayer universe Gaijin is developing has evolved beyond pure aerial combat. The massive historical battles featured in War Thunder cannot be fought with aviation alone -- World of Planes is only the beginning," the site says.

What this means is anyone's guess, since Gaijin has not offered any details regarding ground- or sea-based combat as of yet. The company has released a new screenshot gallery, though, and you'll find that and more at the new official site.

Choose My Adventure: I fell into a burning ring of Ryzom

Yes, I'm trying to spruce up the header a bit. Mixed results.
After an intensely close vote, the winner for my destination in this round of Choose My Adventure is Ryzom! And I do mean intensely close; up until the polls closed, it looked very possible that the vote would end in the favor of Lord of the Rings Online or even a straight-up tie. But the readers have spoken, and my destination is set to the world of Atys and its inhabitants. Meanwhile, Johnny Cash handily won the bonus poll, so it's time to spin up song songs by the Man in Black while I write this.

For those of you who don't know what in the world Ryzom is, you can sort of be forgiven. It's one of those games that seems to be uniquely brilliant while managing to fall off the radar altogether, which is a real shame. So this week I'm going to discuss the game in an overarching sense, outline what I'm looking forward to, and of course give everyone a chance to vote on the character that I'll be making for the next six weeks of exploration.

    RIFT - Telaran wedding
Want to help Trion set a Guinness world record? You'll need a copy of RIFT and a significant other, as the firm is aiming to make video game history by setting the record for most virtual marriages in a 24-hour period.

The event will take place on February 14th at noon eastern, and there are no restrictions with regard to character race, class, or sex (opposing faction nuptials are a no-no, however). Trion is also offering up an exclusive Valentine's Day character title (Tier of Knots) to each wedded character.

RIFT's marriage mechanics will go live in the 1.7 update in early February, and they include rings, a wedding planner book, and wedding instances that support up to 200 friends. More info is available on the RIFT forums.

Riding into Rohan: LotRO maps out 2012

      Riders of Rohan
In the words of Frank Sinatra, 2011 "was a very good year" for Lord of the Rings Online. Executive Producer Kate Paiz and Director of Communications Adam Mersky sat down with us to talk about the future of the game, but before they got to the juicy details, they wanted to give a quick recap of the previous year for the game and the studio.

The big emphasis for LotRO in 2011 was the unifying of the global community and the release of the game's third (and best-selling) expansion, Rise of Isengard. While the aforementioned unification of the NA and EU sides of the game presented many challenges for the team including localization, it paid off in spades. Turbine plans to continue to add more payment options for those used to methods other than the ones currently available. The team was most proud of unveiling Saruman "in all of his glory" and the inclusion of free players into the sphere of Monster Play.

"The game definitely grew last year," Mersky said in response to a question about the current number of players. He noted that the playerbase has changed somewhat in the past two years, becoming more casual in some respects.

But it's time to move forward! Turbine is prepared to take LotRO players on a dizzying chase around the wilds of Middle-earth with a few significant changes and additions to the game -- and the release of the brand-new expansion later this year, Riders of Rohan. Mounted combat, ho!

BlizzCon skipping 2012 due to 'jam-packed schedule'

Sorry Blizzard fans, you're going to have to go without your BlizzCon fix this year.

Our sister site WoW Insider spotted the word on the World of Warcraft forums, in which a community manager posted a brief update on the popular convention: "In light of our jam-packed schedule, we've decided to hold the next BlizzCon in 2013." Currently the studio is working on Diablo III, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and its top-secret Titan MMO project.

BlizzCon has been held yearly since 2005 with only one exception: The studio declined to hold it in 2006. The convention was notorious for being the venue in which Blizzard announced its major upcoming projects.

The absence of BlizzCon this year may be offset by the announcement of the 2012 Battle.net World Championship to take place in Asia toward the end of this year.

Turbine responds to LotRO store armor controversy

Following the community uproar over the selling of premium armor with stats in the Lord of the Rings Online store, Turbine has posted an official response to the matter in the form of a Q&A post on the forums.

Community Manager Sapience says that Turbine is "very aware of the controversy" and wanted to address specific points of concern. According to the post, Turbine said it never intended to promise that it would abstain from selling statted gear to give low-level players a boost, but the studio promised that this would not happen with endgame armor. The company admits to being "too generous" with the stats in question, and may adjust the item's power levels or possibly remove them from the store after further observation.

The studio took the opportunity to clarify its "convenience not advantage" stance. "Anything that's compulsory to be competitive in ranked play or achieves something by degrading another player's experience. We have not and will not make that part of our F2P offering," Sapience writes.

He concludes by promising more transparency going forward: "We'll take this as a sign that we need to do a better job in clear and open communication. In the future we will take more time to explain why -- not just what we're doing."

Massively previously reached out to Turbine for an interview on the subject but the studio declined to participate.

The Daily Grind: What vanity pet would you like to see in your favorite MMO?

Last week Turbine announced all sorts of huge updates for Dungeons and Dragons Online in 2012. Among exciting talk of expansions, Druids, and level cap increases, one little item may have slipped under some folks' radar. Vanity pets are coming to DDO in 2012 -- specifically, "fun and cute DnD critters," according to Executive Producer Fernando Paiz.

Justin and I chatted a bit about that on this week's Massively Speaking, and Justin put forth the awesome idea of a tiny Beholder pet. I loved the idea and it set me to thinking. Vanity pets in MMOs are such a frivolous little thing, yet they're such fun to so many people, and it seems like everyone has a wish list of "wouldn't it be cool if..." vanity pets.

So what's yours? Would you love a little Beholder in DDO? Would you love to see Fallen Earth offer a prairie chicken pet to go with your mount? Tell us what vanity pet you'd love to see trailing along behind your character!

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

League of Legends update bringing sharper AI, new bots

League of Legends is well known for its challenging team-based gameplay and its rather steep learning curve, leading many users to play co-operatively against AI in order to hone their skills. In addition, co-op vs. AI is "the primary game mode for a surprisingly large percentage of users" according to senior producer Mark Norris. In light of this, Riot Games is bringing a huge new update to League of Legends' AI matches.

For starters, Riot will be introducing AI bots for a whopping 40 of the game's champions, allowing players to test their mettle against a wider variety of opponents. In addition, the AI itself is in for an update that will allow bots to behave more like their human counterparts by utilizing predictive targeting for skillshots (such as Ashe's ultimate) and employing a great deal more strategy than the current bots. Of course, there are still some things that bots can't do (such as intelligent jungling), but Norris suggests "that's actually a huge advanced area that we do want to look at and get into, that we're in the the real rudimentary stages of trying to figure out right now."

          Hyperspace Beacon: Roleplayer's rant

          Hyperspace Beacon: Roleplayer's rant
I don't like to rant. Really! Usually, ranting is full of emotionally charged rhetoric, and oftentimes it's riddled with inaccurate statements. I especially don't like to rant about something that I like a lot. For instance, Star Wars: The Old Republic has, by far, exceeded my personal expectations for any MMO; however, some missteps in production have tainted its perfection. (No, I'm not going to talk about Ilum again.) Of course, we are all looking for our version of perfection in an MMO, right? Unfortunately, no MMO will live up to that expectation. In fact, if I did find my version of MMO perfection, I would probably be the only one playing it. But I do believe I have ideas that those in my community could latch on to. They are also relatively simple. Yes, yes, I know nothing is ever as simple as it seems, but indulge me for a few moments.

As many of you know, I enjoy roleplaying in my MMOs -- character creation, really. I'm not one of those roleplayers who hang out in a pub all day never experiencing any gameplay. Although there's nothing wrong with that, I find it a be a waste of $15 a month.

I have complied what I believe will make the experience of SWTOR more enjoyable for those who enjoy playing the game like I do, and I think that those of you who don't necessarily like to roleplay per se but do like to create unique characters in the MMO space will agree that these are a must. I did set some personal criteria when compiling the list. For instance, I didn't want to break BioWare's general vision for the game. I also wanted to use existing items in the game so that my expectations were realistic -- no guild capital ships or image design system. And all of these items have been mentioned in print someplace before, so I'm not the only one who believes these should be implemented.

Max Schaefer talks Torchlight II development, potential MMO plans

It's up to you if you find Torchlight's somewhat exaggerated, cartoony style more or less grating than Diablo's insistence on layering black paint over further black paint.
There are a lot of people eagerly anticipating Diablo III, but there are also several people looking forward to Torchlight II, the followup to the hugely successful spiritual sequel to Diablo. A recent interview with Max Schaefer, co-founder and CEO of Runic Games, discusses the development of the sequel including some of the contrasting points between it and Diablo III -- including the lack of any sort of virtual item shop. As Schaefer puts it, the team wants to put together a good game that stands on its own, and if it's successful the developers will look in the direction of an expansion rather than a straightforward shop.

Schaefer also discusses a potential MMO coming out of the studio, something that's long been among the studio's plans -- one of the big reasons that Runic partnered with Perfect World Entertainment was due to its expertise with running an MMO. He claims that it's definitely still on the table, but it would be a big change for the studio, since the company has focused on staying small and launching an MMO is a very long-term commitment. Somewhat sad news for those hoping that Torchlight II's launch would spearhead MMO development directly, but the possibility certainly remains.

It's been in the making for months now, but the wait is almost over. On February 2nd, Star Trek Online will release the latest in the line of Enterprises, the Odyssey-class (Enterprise-F) starship. Players are invited to do more than gawk at its power and majesty, as Cryptic is inviting all players level 5 or higher to take one for a test drive... and then take one home on the house.

Cryptic notes that the new Odyssey will be available for only a limited time at the start of the month, after which it will disappear from the game for an indeterminate amount of time. Players who cannot fly the top-tier starship can nevertheless earn it for use at a later date.

The Odyssey (and its corresponding Klingon Vengeance-class starship) giveaway is just the first part of STO's second anniversary events. From February 2nd through the 5th, the mischievous Q will challenge players to complete tasks in exchange for mystery prizes.

BioWare wants to let you know that Star Wars: The Old Republic is sorry it hasn't been as responsive to your needs lately, and that after weeks of counseling (and back-room coding), its fledgling MMO is prepared to make up with you.

Principal Lead Combat Designer Georg Zoeller announced today that the infamous ability delay should be clearing up nicely, thanks to an overnight 1.1.0b patch. He says BioWare didn't want to wait until the next big patch to roll it out, opting to instead deliver it as quickly to players as possible.

However, Zoeller also notes that the team "is not done improving combat responsiveness" and has several other tweaks and fixes in the work for patch 1.1.1. Other areas of improvement that BioWare is investigating include UI clarity, making cast bars more accurate, and rectifying timing differences for specific abilities and animations.

The Game Archaeologist's World of Warcraft confession

            WoW Concept Art
As you may well know by now, I wasn't an early adopter of the MMO scene apart from a brief exposure to BBSes in the '90s and Anarchy Online and Final Fantasy XI in the early 2000s. To be honest, I found that MMOs were as intimidating -- and fascinating -- to me as pen-and-paper RPGs. You see, in high school I started buying RPG manuals and devouring them cover-to-cover, but I could never find friends or like-minded people with whom to play. The genre was a spectator sport for me; I was looking in from the sidelines and imagining what would happen if I actually got to be part of a D&D session.

Likewise, MMORPGs in their earlier forms appeared as user-friendly to me as that house on the block with overgrown shrubs, a rusty iron fence, and a mangy, ever-barking mutt in front of it. Maybe it was really cool inside, or maybe it was a death trap from whence there was no escape, but I never had the courage to find out. Let me put it this way: I purchased and read the entire Star Wars Galaxies Prima Guide three times over without once signing up for the game.

I'm sharing this with you because I always want to remember that what we take for granted today -- that MMOs are friendly, fun, engaging, and a downright natural part of many of our gaming lives -- isn't always true for those curious lookey-loos who feel intimidated by the scope, busy UIs, subscription fees, or the often bizarre attitudes that long-term MMO players exhibit. For me, it took one game that tore those barriers down to extend a welcoming hand to me, guiding me into these awesome games.

Of course, that was World of Warcraft. And even though my geek cred would be so much higher if it were something earlier or, well, not so mainstream, that wouldn't be the truth. So today I'm going to share my story of how I got into MMOs and why the early days of WoW were some of my most treasured gaming memories.

It may not be a full-blown expansion, but don't let the decimal point throw you off: EVE Online Crucible's 1.1 patch is a beast of an update, and it's roaring onto the live server today.

Crucible 1.1 "enhances and updates" many of the key features of the game, starting with a customizable NeoCom (user interface) that can be tweaked to the player's desire. The update also contains adjustments to Tech 2 modules, balances to blaster ammo, and the ability for alliances to enter into factional warfare.

As a result of a significant change to how player-owned structures use legacy fuel -- as in, they won't any longer, but they will be switching over to fuel blocks -- CCP is urging customers to pay attention lest they log in and find themselves in the dark.

You can get the full skinny on the update by either reading the full patch notes, reading through the list of major features, or listening to the grizzled voice of CCP Soundwave going over the 1.1 highlights after the jump.

Sometimes the bird flies away, and sometimes you unchain it and smack it in the head and then complain that it left.
Disclaimer: The Soapbox column is entirely the opinion of this week's writer and does not necessarily reflect the views of Massively as a whole. If you're afraid of opinions other than your own, you might want to skip this column.

With all of the other crises hitting the gaming world, it's easy to have missed the fact that Lord of the Rings Online has started selling statted gear in the cash shop. It's not endgame gear, of course, and it's mostly there for low-level players to get a minor boost. Really, as has been said by others, it's not something all that unusual, nor is it game-breaking in the slightest. It's just a convenience thing.

It's also something that Turbine promised would never be done.

I don't have an issue with the sale of low-level armor with stats on it, in Lord of the Rings Online or in other games. What I do have an issue with is the matter of credibility, the one currency that every company starts with and loses over time. Credibility is something you have to spend carefully, and every so often, a company spends it wrong. And the results, in the long term, are never pretty.

If you're playing Final Fantasy XI on your PlayStation 3, you might want to head to Gamer Escape to get the details on an upcoming hardware tweak.

The website reports that sometime in February, Sony will release a system update for the PS3 that will increase the hard drive space necessary to run the PlayStation 2 version of FFXI. PS3 models that feature 60GB and 20GB drives are the only units being affected, but it's worth noting because the FFXI client will require an additional 9GB of space after the patch (21GB total).

The PS2 version of FFXI isn't changing, nor is the Windows version, so don't sweat it if you're not playing the title on your PS3. If you are, though, the source article is worth a read. As of press time, Square-Enix hasn't divulged a reason for the space increase.

[Thanks to Andrew for the tip!]
