James Bond Never Wore Wi-Fi Enabled Cufflinks, But You Can

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 11:37 AM PST

James Bond is a badass because he's always prepared for whatever situation arises. The guy's had gadgets for everything, from exploding keychains to to a stun-gun cigarette, along with just about anything you can imagine. That is, unless you imagine USB cufflinks that double as a Wi-Fi hotspot dongle in a pinch. Unlike most of James Bonds' gadgets, Wi-Fi cufflinks actually exist.

Kudos to our friends at Engadget for turning us on to these things. Playing the part of Q, Brookstone has available polished silver oval Wi-Fi and 2GB USB combination cufflinks that allow you keep data on your person and remedy a bad router in a pinch. Just plug one of your cufflinks into a PC wired directly to the modem and you have an instant high-speed hotspot to work with.

Unfortunately, these things run $250, which borders on the ridiculous, especially since they don't triple as an explosive device. Ah well, file this one under 'cool, but not worth price.'

Asus P9X79 Deluxe Review

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 11:26 AM PST

A deluxe board with an enthusiast price tag

Let's be frank: If you're even thinking about buying into Intel's deliciously fast LGA2011 platform this early, you are an enthusiast—Enthusiast with a capital-freaking-E, since you can't even look at LGA2011 without buying a $550 chip.

So if you're jumping in, you might as well use both feet. Asus's P9X79 Deluxe certainly fits that bill, delivering cool features and a stout price tag: This X79-based board will set you back a cool $400.

"Deluxe" features on board include digital VRMs, Asus's trademark UEFI, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with a bundled smartphone app that enables you to remotely overclock and monitor your system. This board also has an all-new feature that lets you use a particular USB port to update its BIOS without a processor installed.

The P9X79 Deluxe offers top-notch performance and all the needed amenities.

The P9X79 is an eight-DIMM-slot board, not one of the weaker four-slot boards that limit your upgrade path. The eight-DIMM design will let you build a 32GB PC for less than $200 in memory cost. Doing that on any four-slot board will set you back more than $1,000. What do you do with 32GB? You set up a RAM drive, of course! We set up a RAM drive on this board using eight 4GB sticks of Corsair Vengeance RAM and saw read speeds of 4GB/s. Take that, SSDs!

But what you get in RAM, you lose in storage. The PCH in the X79 has the circuitry to support many more SAS and SATA 6Gb/s ports, but compatibility concerns caused board makers to "de-feature" it at the last minute. So instead of a board bristling with 10 SATA 6Gb/s ports, we get the standard Z68 layout of two SATA 6Gb/s and four SATA 3Gb/s. Asus tries to beef up the board's six standard ports (four 3Gb/s and two 6Gb/s) with a Marvell 6Gb/s controller that also does SSD caching. Few of us could afford to install that many HDDs given today's prices, of course, but that doesn't render the lack of native support any less of a letdown—this is a $400 motherboard, after all.

We fired up Intel's new DX79SI mobo to compare its performance to that of the P9X79. While we don't normally expect to see big performance deltas between boards based on the same chipsets, the Asus board generally produced better benchmark numbers, with one significant exception: Intel's board delivered much faster SATA 6Gb/s write speeds. We normally use OCZ's Enyo external drive to test USB 3.0 performance, but the P9X79's USB controller uses the new and speedier UASP protocol, so we also used an OWC SATA 6Gb/s drive inside a new Asus enclosure. With UASP, we saw USB 3.0 speeds climb to a nice 225MB/s read and 217MB/write. We would have liked to compare this to a USB 3.0 enclosure that doesn't support UASP, but our generic USB 3.0 enclosures don't seem to like any SATA 6Gb/s drives.

In the end, The P9X79 Deluxe gives you just about everything an enthusiast would truly want: SLI, tri-SLI, CrossFire X, PCIe 3.0, tons of overclocking features, lots of USB 3.0 ports, and truly fast performance (albeit only in comparison to the limited number of X79 boards we've seen so far). Now if only it had more SATA 6Gb/s ports and the price wasn't so painful.

So Long And Thanks For All The Fish, VGA/DVI

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 10:57 AM PST

Alas, poor VGA and DVI; we knew ye well. If those increasingly obsolete connection technologies hold a place near and dear to your heart, you might want to make it a point of going out and picking up a laptop or desktop sometime soon. It's looking like five years from now, DVI and VGA ports will join dinosaurs, VCRs and the Dodo in the pages of the history books, smothered by the more widespread HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces.

In a study cited by Techworld, NPD In-Stat says that both AMD and Intel will start phasing out support for VGA in 2015, and AMD plans on phasing out DVI at the same time. Why are HDMI and DisplayPort sticking around while their counterparts shuffle off into the sunset? It's all about the upgrade path, according to In-Stat's Brian O-Rourke.

"DVI has no roadmap to upgrade the specification; it is essentially the same as it was upon its launch in 1999. HDMI and DisplayPort, on the other hand, have made significant strides in a number of markets."

DVI isn't going quietly, though: In-Stat expects over 19 million DVI-sporting desktops to ship in 2012. Will you crack open a 40 for the dead ports walking, or have you already made the leap to HDMI and DisplayPort?

SOPA And PIPA Shelved Indefinitely

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 10:30 AM PST

Remember when your mom said whining never helped anything? Turns out she was wrong! Ever since the day the 'Net went dark, politicians -- ranging from Congressmen to presidential candidates to European Internet czars -- have been tripping over themselves backing away from the political hot potato. This morning, even more heartening events occurred: the lead sponsors behind the bills announced that both PIPA and SOPA have been shelved indefinitely.

Now, that doesn't quite mean they're dead -- SOPA and PIPA may just be sleeping until the collective herd forgets about the uproar -- but it definitely puts a damper on their odds of passage. Even if SOPA and PIPA die on the political vine due to widespread opposition and upcoming elections, don't expect this to be the end of things. IP theft is still a real issue and one that the government and big business alike take seriously, as evidenced by the closing line in an announcement released by the MPAA this morning:

"It is incumbent that (SOPA/PIPA critics) now sincerely work with all of us to achieve a meaningful solution to this critically important goal."

(Of course, he also took time to signal the shelving as a hammer-blow to the knee of America's interests. "As a consequence of failing to act, there will continue to be a safe haven for foreign thieves; American jobs will continue to be lost; and consumers will continue to be exposed to fraudulent and dangerous products peddled by foreign criminals.")

The sponsors of both bills still hope to reach a political tenable compromise with the 'Net in upcoming days: if we hear of SOPA stirring from its new-found slumber, we'll let you know.

Feds Take Down MegaUpload, Anonymous Nukes Everybody

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 10:02 AM PST

No one likes having their failures rubbed in their faces, and it looks like the U.S. government and the Hollywood lobbyist groups aren't any different. With the SOPA/PIPA blackouts barely over with, the government -- in collaboration with New Zealand -- shut down MegaUpload.com and arrested four of its employees on charges of copyright infringement and conspiracy to commit racketeering. Bad timing, eh? Anonymous sure thought so -- after the crackdown, the hacktivist went on a major DDoS binge that shutdown a whole host of major government and industry websites. Apparently, Anon doesn't like things rubbed in their face, either.

According to a statement by the group (and backed up by tons of publications, tweets and Facebook chatter), the websites for the Department of Justice, the U.S. Copyright Office, the RIAA, the MPAA, Universal Music, EMI, Warner Music, the FBI and French copyright authority HADOPI all bit the dust under a withering barrage from Anon's Low Orbit Ion Cannon and #OpMegaUpload. At times, Akamai's real-time Web monitor reported global Internet traffic spiked up to 14 percent above normal levels.

The sites are back up now, but TechCrunch is reporting that the files users stored on MegaUpload have all been taken down and are currently irretrievable, regardless of whether or not the files infringed any copyrights. Meanwhile, CNET's Molly Wood speculates that the government intentionally timed the MegaUpload takedown specifically to spit in Anon's face and get them riled up -- thereby erasing the goodwill generated by the SOPA/PIPA protests.

As a .com site, MegaUpload falls under U.S. jurisdiction, so the government can legally seize the domain. (Same with .org and .net sites.) Another interesting twist highlighted yesterday: MegaUpload's acting CEO is none other than hip-hop megaproducer Swizz Beatz. WTF? He wasn't one of the four arrested or the seven charged, however.

Longtime Nvidia Critics Says Kepler is "Clear Winner" Against AMD's Tahiti Architecture

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 09:52 AM PST

AMD might be in for a dogfight when Nvidia's Kepler architecture leaves the porch. Early reports suggest Nvidia has a real winner on its hands and that Kepler is such a strong performer, even Nvidia's mid-range cards will give AMD's high-end GPUs a run for their money. The information available is vague and scattered, but it all points to Nvidia stealing back the performance crown.

Charlie Demerjian, who has a long history of being critical of all things Nvidia, sang some high praise for Kepler over at SemiAccurate. According to Demerjian, Nvidia is going to "win this round on just about every metric" with its Kepler architecture, which will trump AMD's Tahiti "handily." Those remarks come after spending hands-on time with a pair of Kepler-based graphics cards and collecting "hard information," though he isn't allowed to share specific benchmarks just yet.

Demerjian's reveal jibes with information information leaked by Chinese website Inpai.com.cn, which is claiming Nvidia's mid-range cards will have the moxie to challenge AMD's higher end GPUs. According to Inpai, Kepler's GK104 architecture will sport a 256-bit interface, 2GB of onboard memory, and have a 225W TDP.

Sapphire's Overclocked Radeon HD 7950 Card Tipped Online

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 09:24 AM PST

AMD is expected to launch its Radeon HD 7950 graphics card in a little less than two weeks from now on January 31, 2012, for around $400 to $450, if the Internet rumors prove true. In the meantime, Sapphire apparently has an overclocked version in the works, with several official looking picture having been leaked to the Web.

Guru3D forum member "asder00" posted nearly half a dozen photos of Sapphire's overclocked card, and they appear to be legitimate press photos, including two that show the retail box. Unfortunately, eye candy is the only treat we're given; no word on specs, price, or release date for this particular model.

To help with the speculation, Turkish website Donanimhaber.com posted rumored specifications of the HD 7950. According to Donanimhaber, there will be two versions available, one with 1.5GB of onboard memory and one with 3GB. The stock clocked GPU will run at 800MHz and the memory at up to 1250MHz.

Computer Programmer Faces 10 Years in Prison for Alleged Source Code Theft

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 08:59 AM PST

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested a computer programmer for allegedly stealing proprietary software code from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FRBNY). Bo Zhang, the man accused of stealing the source code, worked at the bank as a contract employee assigned to work on further developing a specific portion of the Government-Wide Accounting and Reporting Program (GWA), software which is owned by the Department of Treasury to track government spending.

"As today's case demonstrates, our cyber infrastructure is vulnerable not only to cybercriminals and hackers, but also alleged thieves like Bo Zhang who used his position as a contract employee to steal government intellectual property. Fighting cyber crime is one of the top priorities of this office and we will aggressively pursue anyone who puts our computer security at risk," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.

According to the complaint. Zhang admitted to copying the GWA source code onto an FRBNY-owned external hard drive, and then connected the external HDD to his private office computer, his home computer, and his laptop. He used the code in connection with a private business he ran training individuals in computer programming. FBI Assistant Director in Charge Janice K. Fedarcyk said his intentions were "immaterial."

"Stealing it and copying it threatened the security of vitally important source code," Fedarcyk said.

If convicted, Zhang, 32 years old, faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison, a maximum term of three years of supervised release, and a fine of whichever is greatest: $250,000, twice the pecuniary gain derived from the offense, or twice the gross pecuniary loss to the victims.

Notebook Makers Ready to Strike with Thunderbolt

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 08:36 AM PST

In May 2011, Hewlett-Packard said it hadn't found a "value proposition" in Intel's Thunderbolt (formerly known as Light Peak) interface, and come to find out, Thunderbolt controllers are 10 times more expensive than USB 3.0 chips. Big whoop, HP's stance isn't getting in the way of other system makers jumping on the high-speed interface.

Acer, Asus, and Lenovo are all planning to launch Ultrabooks based on Intel's Ivy Bridge platform with Thunderbolt support in the second quarter of 2012, DigiTimes reports. In fact, Acer's already announced its Aspire S5 Ultrabook, supposedly the thinnest the world has ever seen, and the first to implement a Thunderbolt port.

It's not just for notebooks. DigiTimes claims to have heard from "industry sources" that Gigabyte will roll out a line of motherboards supporting Intel's high-speed interface around the same time as the next wave of Ultrabooks appear. Ivy Bridge also natively supports the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 spec, so it will be interesting to see if Thunderbolt can thrive alongside it.

Resident Evil 6 Editor Roundtable: Opinions, Analysis, and Conspiracy Theories

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 05:26 AM PST

For me, Mass Effect 3 happens to be a sort of déjà vu moment from nearly a decade ago. Specifically, this is the second time that BioWare has taken a consistent player character across three games. Back in 1998, I rolled a little half-elf ranger for Baldur’s Gate; by that game’s conclusion, I took special care to transfer the character save over to a 3.5-inch floppy. Holding onto said floppy proved handy for Baldur’s Gate II’s release in 2000, where I turned that scrappy half-elf into a ranger worthy of Strider/Aragon — able to lead a band of warriors, wizards, and animals into a victorious battle against a wizard who could bend time itself. And I rounded out this ranger’s tale with Baldur’s Gate II: Throne of Bhaal in 2001 — where he became a sort of god-king that could call in elementals and beasts when he’s not slinking in the shadows like some sort of forest ninja. So the idea of taking a character that I have slavishly developed over three games to a grand conclusion again is what excites me about Mass Effect 3 the most.

But what sort of Shepard am I playing for the conclusion to this crazy grand sci-fi saga? That ranger eventually retired to a quiet life in his cabin surrounded by wolves, rabbits, and other fauna. That was the last time I followed the “good” path in an RPG. Since then, I’ve generally played evil — I was the Devil in Fallout 3; and I grew horns and featured sickly skin in Fable 2. I reserved Jennifer Hale’s excellent acting for a proper heroic Paragon female Shepard, and in line with my “I play asshole fellows” mentality, I created a male Shepard. The result: while Jeremy played Yukiko Shepard with a healthy amount of meticulous thinking, Hobo Shepard (I also don’t take character names seriously) played fast and loose. For nearly every red dialog choice or Renegade interrupt, I promptly chose that option — with exceptions being in rare times where I personally didn’t want the result (more on that in a bit). Since Jeremy and I both played as Infiltrators, our general styles showed two sides of the sniper Shepard space coin.

Q.U.B.E Review

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 05:26 AM PST

It's pretty difficult to look at a screenshot from Q.U.B.E and not imagine Gabe Newell frantically gasbagging with his solicitor. A first person Q.U.B.E Reviewpuzzler set in a testing area with a sterile, sheet white aesthetic?

But wait! Appearances can be deceptive, and despite bearing a cursory resemblance to Portal, a few hours with Q.U.B.E and you realise it's no mere imitator.

For a start, Q.U.B.E is a much quieter game. There's no sultry homicidal AI accompaniment here, no British comedian being clumsily droll. All you've got for company is a cold, ambient soundtrack and a pair of nifty gloves.

These gloves form the crux of your progress through the game, as they're used to manipulate different coloured blocks in a series of increasingly complicated rooms.

For instance, red blocks can be raised out the floor to make columns, whilst yellow blocks can be turned into stair-like structures. Blue blocks meanwhile spring out whenever something is pressed upon them, whether it's another block, a sphere or even you, resulting in much fun as you catapult yourself around the environment.

Things become increasingly tricky when room spinning purple blocks are introduced, as well as green blocks that can only be moved by using the other (you guessed it) blocks.

If all that wasn't enough, coloured spheres, magnets and beams of light are thrown into the mix too. It's like a minimalist cerebral assault course, increasing in difficulty as it goes on.

It might sound awfully finicky, but it isn't. Q.U.B.E tests your patience and puzzling prowess in the best way. You'll get infuriated, and some of Q.U.B.E Reviewthe puzzle rooms become increasingly intimidating, but the feeling of accomplishment once you triumph is immensely satisfying.

Toxic games have also managed to eke out a good looking game with Epic's Unreal Engine. It's very Portal, but it also recalls the saturated, vibrant look of Mirror's Edge.

It gets particularly impressive once you begin to explore the pitch black bowels of the facility (illuminated only by the glow of the coloured cubes).

It's wonderfully atmospheric too. You're all alone in Q.U.B.E. and no plot is given away. In an age where exposition is thrown at us minute after minute, Q.U.B.E's reticence to explain what's going on is all the more disquieting and effective. Wandering around the shifting, overbearing facility is very unnerving.

It's not all perfect. Some of the ball physics seem a bit off. You might have the solution to something, but because the ball isn't doing what it's supposed you have to restart.

You can complete the game in about five hours too, with little incentive to return. Perhaps the developers will encourage further jaunts into the world of Q.U.B.E with new content down the line, but it feels a bit spartan as it stands right now.

However these niggles are well worth overlooking, as Q.U.B.E is a fine puzzler that deserves to overcome the 'Portal-clone' jibes that'll doubtless be thrown at it. It's challenging, yet oddly accessible and addictive. You'd be a blockhead to dismiss it. 8/10

All Things Red Dead Redemption Bundled Together for Game of the Year Edition

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 01:26 AM PST

Red Dead Redemption Game of the Year Edition

Red Dead Redemption won plenty of awards last year, including many Game of the Years — 1UP named it best action/adventure game, best expansion (for Undead Nightmare), and Game of the Year. A full year and a half after it was first released, Rockstar will finally bring out a Game of the Year edition that’s packed with content.

In addition to the game itself, the package comes with every bit of DLC that’s been released. That includes all of the big releases like Undead Nightmare right down to to the brand-new Myths and Mavericks bonus pack (available to RDR players now). It also contains the pre-order goodies you may have missed out on from before the game was released in May 2010.

You can count on getting one new thing: the hardcore single-player difficulty. Beyond that, those who have already invested a good deal of money in the game and its DLC won’t find much here, with the exception of 360 players getting the Solomon’s Folly gang hideout and challenges for the first time.

The GotY edition is set for release on October 11 in North America (October 14 internationally) for $49.99. The only thing missing from this announcement is some word about a PC port; the game continues to be console-only. Even Rockstar’s L.A. Noire, released just this past May, is already coming to PC.

Resident Evil 6 Editor Roundtable: Opinions, Analysis, and Conspiracy Theories

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 05:23 PM PST

TGS: Nintendo Press Conference Roundup: 3DS Games Galore

Miyamoto Zelda

By now, you’ve likely heard the big news out of the Nintendo 3DS Conference 2011, the company’s pre-TGS event: Monster Hunter 4 and a new Fire Emblem are coming to 3DS, the eShop and other aspects of the system are to be improved, and a pink system will be out in Japan next month. The lone bit of non-3DS news was Shigeru Miyamoto showing off The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword at the show’s beginning, mentioning that the game could provide 50-100 hours of gameplay. As for 3DS, there was no news about the second circle pad attachment or the rumored 3DS redesign; instead, Nintendo answered one oft-heard criticism — that 3DS doesn’t have enough games — by showing more than two dozen titles, many of which were new. (And many of which won’t make it outside of Japan.)

As far as first-party content goes, there were the usual suspects of Super Mario 3D Land (dated for November 3) and Mario Kart 7 (December 7). Keep in mind those and every other release date mentioned are intended only for Japan, so don’t get your heart set on any dates — although both of those games are expected out in November and December, respectively, in the United States.

Kid Icarus: Uprising had been planned to be out this holiday; it’s now scheduled for release in January, so it won’t be out this year as expected. Satoru Iwata talked about a Kid Icarus anime of some sort that will be produced and released on 3DS worldwide through the Nintendo Video app.

Animal Crossing

A number of games we already knew about — Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansions 2, and Mario Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games — will all be out at some point in 2012. Mario Tennis was announced and that, too, is slated for 2012. The previously announced Shinrei Camera was shown. A new Girls Mode (a successor to what was released in North America as Style Savvy on DS) is a fashion game where you can coordinate bags with outfits, your hair with accessories, and so on; it will be out in 2012.

Nintendo also announced a new Tomodachi Collection (pictured below), a sequel to the DS life simulation game that sold quite well in Japan. Like its predecessor, don’t expect it to make it out of Japan. Other new Japan-focused games from Nintendo included an online soccer game, and a new Culdcept card game.

As for third-party games, there was plenty there, too. Resident Evil: Revelations will be out in early 2012, with Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai set for March. The latter, if you’re not familiar, is a new rhythm game in the series with a very Otaku-style cheerleader; in other words, we won’t be seeing it in North America. The same can also possibly be said for Girls RPG: Cinderellife from Level-5 and a new Love Plus dating sim (coming on December 8).

Tomadachi Collection

After we got a glimpse of Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy earlier today, a winter release was attached during tonight’s event. Iwata also said that “fans should expect more Final Fantasy,” so if you’re a 3DS-owning Final Fantasy fan who doesn’t care for rhythm games, you may yet be in luck.

More third-party games included Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D (winter), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime 3 (November 2), SD Gundam Generation 3D (December 22), Bravely Default: Flying Fairy (a Square-Enix JRPG coming in 2012, pictured below), True Dynasty Warriors Vs. (featuring four-player multiplayer), Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble (winter), and Tekken 3D: Prime Edition (winter).

There was a lot shown and, as noted elsewhere, Nintendo plans on releasing 3D trailers for all of it through the Nintendo Video channel — at least for those in Japan. And as I mentioned several times, a handful of these games will never see the light of day in North America and Europe without importing; be sure to check out 1UP’s new cover story on Japanese games being made specifically for a Japanese audience to dive more deeply into that subject.

Some Assembly Required: A look at EQII's dungeon maker

Some Assembly Required - architectural banner
So you're an armchair game designer, eh? Well, EverQuest II invites you to put your money where your mouth is -- at least as it relates to dungeon creation.

While Sony Online Entertainment's venerable fantasy title is no stranger to player-generated content given its spectacular player- and guild-housing mechanics, this winter's Age of Discovery expansion upped the ante a little bit in the form of the new dungeon maker toolset. The system is a bit rough around the edges, but it's nonetheless a fantastic first iteration that adds a lot of fun and replay value to an MMO that was already chock-full of both.

Minecraft guild creates massive world to help educate children

      Massively Minecraft Miner's Guild
Yes, I know that Minecraft isn't technically an MMO, but with multiplayer servers, you can have up to 999 players connected simultaneously in the same space, which is ironically more than many MMOs. But I digress!

Massively Minecraft (no relation) is a community of Minecraft players dedicated to the education of children on a massive scale through the popular indie sandbox. Created by virtual world vet Jokaydia, Massively Minecraft is "a Guild based learning community for kids aged 4-16 who are interested in developing digital media skills, exploring their creativity and developing online social skills." Of course, in an environment like that, there's an application process to get onto the multiplayer server's whitelist, so safety is a priority.

You can learn more about how the Massively Minecraft community operates by visiting their website.

Not pictured: looking up from this point on the map to see several docked battlecruisers. It's unexpectedly impressive.
Whether you're a longtime World of Warcraft player or someone who's just recently tried the game and fallen in love with it, you're probably aware that there are other MMORPGs out there. Recently, the game that's been getting the most press is Star Wars: The Old Republic. And if you've sat down and tried it out as a veteran on World of Warcraft, you probably had some idea of what was going on when you started playing, with the only initial speedbump being the lack of an auto-attack feature.

But there's more to the game than combat and more things that might trip you up in the long run. So Eliot Lefebvre and Matt Daniel are here to help you out with a massive guide to coming into TOR when you're accustomed to the environment of WoW. Take a skip past the break to find out almost everything you'll need to know when converting from the world of Azeroth to the galaxy of Star Wars: The Old Republic.

It's time for the next big World of Warplanes reveal, and this time around, Wargaming.net is focusing on its fearsome collection of German fighters.

Following on the heels of its American fighters release, the company is showing off its German tech tree, a new screenshot gallery, and a new trailer. The tech tree boasts 19 flyable models which are broken into two groups -- fighters and heavy fighters. Notable aircraft include the Bf109 and the jet-powered Me262, both marvels of World War II-era German engineering.

World of Warplanes' German fighters feature "fast altitude climbs and power dive attacks," and you can get a preview of each machine via the gallery below and the trailer after the cut.

With 2011 locked in as a highly profitable year for Trion Worlds, the studio is eager to prove that it didn't pull off a one-trick-pony with RIFT by leaping into 2012 with guns blazing. Scott Hartsman emphasized that the studio's emphasis on having a responsive live team that quickly and decisively acts on player feedback is a key element in what makes RIFT special. "We want to make greater strides for 2012," he said.

Hartsman also opened up about Trion's plans for 2012, starting with the Return to Telara free play weekend that's currently active. The team is preparing to unveil plans about major improvements to the PvP system, including ways to lower PvP wait time, improve the PvP soul system, increase rewards, and perhaps have a form of open-world PvP that isn't limited to factional combat.

Other areas of improvement for the year he mentioned include giving players tools for social gatherings and tweaking the crafting system.

Revamps, redesigns, and restructuring are facts of life when it comes to MMORPG fandom, and if you play these games long enough, sooner or later you'll encounter a portion of your favorite game that has been altered significantly.

Often these alterations take the form of class, skill, or ability changes, but occasionally a dev team will up and decide to remake part of the game world itself. Such was the case last month with EverQuest II's famed Freeport locale, and the sprawling capital city now features new textures, new quests, and seamless transitions between its various quarters (i.e., no more loading screens).

The lengthy list of Freeport changes comprise one of the best revamps I've experienced in many years of playing MMOs, and I can't wait to see what the EQII devs have in store for Qeynos. What about you, Massively folk? What's your favorite zone revamp?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

With Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning just around the corner and Project Copernicus waiting in the wings, 38 Studios is fattening its golden website for the upcoming feast. The studio has expanded the site devoted to the world that both of these games inhabit, and those looking for hints and portents of the studio's upcoming MMO would do well to seek lore within its pages.

Describing the website expansion as a "treasure trove" of new info, 38 Studios has added new landing pages, navigation features, and information about one of the game's races: the Gnomes. The Gnomes are described as "an enigmatic people. They bestow wondrous gifts of knowledge, medicine, and magic to befriend the other kingdoms, yet seldom reveal their plans or intentions to outsiders." It's interesting to note that the Gnomes are divided up into three casts, which does tempt the mind into thinking the word "classes."

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is the single-player RPG that's meant to fill the role of a prologue -- in both real-world and in-game time -- to the much larger Copernicus MMO.

Finally, Casey touches on the patch delays suffered by Star Wars: The Old Republic, excusing the tardiness by suggesting the promised dates are more like guidelines, and besides, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes."

Wind has been one of the most frequently requested powersets since Heavy Weapons hit the game, and I was excited to play around with the set. Does the Wind powerset meet the expectations players had for it? This week on Behind the Mask, I set out to find the answer to that question.

Blizzard continuing to make big mechanical changes to Diablo III

In the next patch, perhaps these will all be bunnies.
While there's still no release date set for Diablo III, it seems the release may be further off than some players were guessing, judging by the latest round of sweeping system overhauls. A new post by game director Jay Wilson goes over several major changes being made to the game, starting with the fact that Scrolls of Identify are gone. You have a short casting time to identify and item and that's it, with no need to carry around a separate item.

The latest changes also remove the Mystic artisan, the Cauldron of Jordan, and the Nephalem Cube. The latter two were removed due to the inclusion of a Town Portal button, making trips back and forth far easier, while the Mystic artisan lacked a sufficiently defined role amidst other item modifications. There's also a major stat overhaul, which reduces the core attributes to Strength, Dexterity, Intellect, and Vitality. They're far-reaching changes, and only time will tell how much their impact might slow the game's release as the team tests the altered systems.

It's safe to say the past two days haven't been the best for the nascent Star Wars: The Old Republic, with its bugs, breaks, and bearish concerns. That doesn't mean that BioWare is packing it in and heading for the hills, however; the studio has just put out a new video detailing the content slated for the game in the coming months. Director James Ohlen lays out several new additions planned for the near future, several of which are features players had been asking for.

PvP will see the addition of a new Warzone as well as an overall ranking system for avid PvP players to track personal progress. UI customization is also coming, starting with a fully resizable and reconfigurable layout. And the Legacy system is being rolled out in full, complete with the promise of new races being available as Legacy rewards for the factions. So if you're a Star Wars: The Old Republic fan and have been feeling a bit down with recent news, this might help perk you back up.

[Update: A reader named Jon has tipped us off to an article on Gamesradar in which BioWare's Daniel Erickson confirms that the character in today's video is "definitely a Miraluka Sith," which suggests that the Miraluka may be ported cross-faction as part of the Legacy system rewards.]

The dream is over. EVE Online's dev teams -- formerly known as Team Best Friends Forever and Team Pink Zombie Kittens -- are breaking up. Fortunately, this is because there are so many devs at this point that CCP is reorganizing its devs into three new teams: Team Super Friends, Game of Drones, and Five 0.

Along with the news of the team reorganization, CCP brings us word of an upcoming patch arriving January 24th. The update will include a rebalance of null ammo and assault ships, buffs to modules, better search options, new calendar notifications, and the ability for alliances to join faction warfare.

Even if you don't play EVE, these patch notes are both highly entertaining and informative, especially if you enjoy seeing devs unhinged and dispensing advice for mosquito repellant.

The company's shares fell by almost 3% to $17.75 US this morning after a stock analyst working with Brean Murray Carret & Co. "cut his price target on the stock to $22 [US] from $28 [US]." In a note to his clients, analyst Todd Mitchell wrote that he felt some "creeping concerns" regarding The Old Republic's performance so far; he added that "initial sales appear to be below expectations, and casual observation of early play is causing us to rethink our churn assumptions." Now we just get to sit back with some popcorn and see whether BioWare can get its business together in time to make a recovery, so take a seat.

Guild leaders are often easily identified because they're the ones running around at a frantic pace, trying to micromanage every last detail. It's no surprise that few people actually want to be guild leaders because the way the role is described, you're almost expected to take on a second job.

But sometimes guild leaders make things harder than they need to be. Part of that is from a desire to take on too much, but part of that is because there have traditionally been certain things we all assume have to be done. Whether you're a brand-new guild leader or someone who's been running the show for years, it's worth stepping back and questioning whether we really need to be doing all of the things we're doing. Let's put on some Bob Marley and look at a few ways to cut down on the busy work.

If I haven't mentioned it before, looking up cats on Wikipedia is dangerous for me because I love cats. I know that the above is a small group of feral cats, but my first instinct is to try to individually cuddle each and every one of those cats. Really, if I could afford more cat food, I'd basically have a home stuffed to the brim with rescued cats. So let's just all look at cat pictures and possibly get up from the computer to say nice things to your own cat.

Or dog, if you just have a dog. I don't have the same degree of affection toward dogs.

But you're not just here for cute animals, are you? You're here for this week's installment of Ask Massively. This week, we're answering yet another question about Star Wars: The Old Republic and the terminology of expansions. If you've got a question you'd like to see answered in a future column, leave it in the comments below or send it to ask@massively.com. Questions may be edited slightly for brevity and/or clarity.
