Skyrim is the Fastest-Selling Steam Game Ever

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 10:13 AM PST

skyrimSkyrim is a technical and artistic masterpiece, but you don't need us to tell you that. The title is expected to pick up just about every game of the year award up for grabs in the next few months, but more importantly for Bethesda, the game also appears to have been a huge financial success as well. According to Valve's Jason Holtman, Skyrim is the "fastest selling title in Steam's history". And just to be clear, Steam has quite a bit of history having launched officially all the way back in 2003.

In addition to the millions of digital sales, Bethesda also claims to have shipped (not sold) 10 million retails copies of the game. Given the success of the series I think it's safe to say at this point we can expect another Elder Scrolls game in a few years. 2013 can't come soon enough.

Western Digital Cuts Hard Drive Warranties – Seagate Follows Suit

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 09:39 AM PST

seagateWestern Digital and Seagate are leaders in mechanical hard drives to be sure, but I think we can all agree this time they are leading the industry in a very negative direction. Back in 2008 Seagate lowered the standard HDD warranty from 5 years to 3, and as expected, just about everyone followed suit shortly after. Now they are dropping the coverage period on some products to as little as one year depending on the model.

Here is what we've hammered down so far:

Western Digital

Caviar Blue, Green, and Scorpio Blue – Drops to 2 years.

Caviar Black, Scorpio Black, and external drives – Stay at 3 years.

Seagate

Constellation 2, Barracuda XT, and ES.2 – Stays at 3 years.

Barracuda, Barracuda Green, and Momentus – Drops to 1 year.

In addition to the consumer backlash retailers are also now put in the awkward position of, at least in the short term, stocking the same drives with two different warranties depending on serial number until old disks sell through.

Interestingly enough however Western Digital claims they will be offering an extended warranty program which will allow customers to buy back into the old three year warranty, but no pricing has yet been announced.

Below is a copy of the letter received by channel partners from Western Digital on the issue:

This new warranty policy will be effective for drives shipped from January 2nd, 2012. It is important that you take a moment to update your website(s) and collateral to reflect this change for effected drives shipped after January 1st, 2012.

All drives shipped to distributors prior to Jan. 2nd 2012 will retain the current warranty terms. Because of existing inventory in the distribution channel there will be a short period of time when some drives with a 3-year warranty will be sold at the same time as drives with a 2-year warranty.

If you have any doubt about the warranty of a drive you purchased, you can go to support.wdc.com, select Warranty and RMA Services and proceed to the Warranty Check page.

With sky high pricing due to the flooding in Thailand, and now warranty cuts, these guys are doing a great job pushing users over to SSD's these days.

AMD Radeon HD 7970 Reference Board Design, Specifications, & Benchmarks Leak

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 09:05 AM PST

7970

With a rumored December 22nd launch of the AMD Radeon HD 7970 just around the corner, details as expected are starting to leak out. A series of slides obtained during a press briefing have confirmed a few additional specifications in addition to what we already knew, and even a few internal benchmarks

Cooler

Perhaps the most immediately apparent change in terms of the cards appearance is that AMD is finally going to be capable of offering up a high performance single-slot card for those willing to go with water cooling. Previous generation parts from the HD5000 and HD 6000 series had issues with the dual DVI connectors spilling over into a second expansion slot, making four-GPU configurations rather difficult in all but the most mammoth of cases. A second slot is still consumed by the 6th generation vapour chamber if you stick with the stock configuration, however the extra space to dissipate the air should also make the 7970 much quieter than we've seen in previous high end parts. The design of the vapor-chamber looks promising, however with a 4.3 billion transistor Tahiti GPU and 12 GDDR5 memory chips pumping out heat like a furnace, it remains to be seen if it's any quieter in reality.

OCing

Of course if board design isn't of much interest to you, perhaps the above slide on overclocking headroom will get your attention. The leaked specifications already confirmed a 925 MHz core clockspeed, however AMD now appears to be openly advertising that the Radeon 7970 will have lots of extra headroom, allowing users to push it to 1 GHz and beyond with the reference air-cooler.

Performance

Lastly, a final slide shows a few internal benchmarks which I caution you, most certainly can't be verified at this point. While it doesn't really tell us much in comparison to the competition, it does claim an average improvement of around 50% when it comes to tessellation performance vs. the Radeon 6970. Since DX11 performance against NVidia has always been an issue, it's great to see performance levels in this area finally starting to catch up. We will have to wait and see when it comes to DX9 performance, as well as how the 7970 will stack up against NVidia part's following release.

So is this the next generation GPU you've been waiting for? Let us know in the comments below.

Intel Prepares To Launch Core i5-2550k Quad Core for LGA1155

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 07:55 AM PST

Core i5The Intel Core i5-2500k and i7-2600k processors were revolutionary when they launched. Offering amazing value for both mid-range and high end PC's, these parts overclocked so easily on air you'd be crazy not to. Recently Sandy Bridge-E has moved in to draw away the attention of the high end enthusiasts, while those on a budget of $300 or less for a CPU have been more or less stuck with the 2500k. Never wanting to miss an opportunity to upsell you to the latest and greatest, Intel is preparing to launch the Core i5-2550k for those who want something slightly better than the 2500k, but can't quite scrape together enough coin for the 2600k/2700k.

If we've managed to peek your interest keep an eye on the retail channel number BX80623I52550K, or for the OEM variation CM806230121300. The exact specifications of the chip haven't yet been published, but if the 2600k/2700k can be used as an example, then a 100Mhz bump to 3.40 GHz sounds likely. It is also expected the chip will feature 256 KB L2 cache per core, 6 MB shared L3 cache, and a TDP of 95W. If you're still saving up for the 2500k on the other hand don't fret. The i5-2550k will likely sit at a price point just above it somewhere below $250.

MMO Weekly News #65 – Aion, Grand Chase, Dragon Nest, & More

Weekly MMO News summary for the week ended December 18 (Dec 12 – Dec 18). A quick look and discussion for every major announcement and update during the week! This week we discussed updates from the following games: Aion, Grand Chase, Luna Online, APB Reloaded, Dragona, Elsword, Sudden Attack, Silkroad-R (New Silkroad Online), Dragon Nest, World of Tanks, Jade Dynasty, Darkeden, War of the Immortals, and Brawl Busters. Lots of news this week – but the bit about Aion 2going free to play is definitely the most interesting bit. The game is scheduled to go free to play sometime in February 2012 in Europe through GameForge. The NCSoft (North American) version of the game hasn’t announced anything as of this video yet, but I suspect even that version will go free to play. Rise and Shiny recap: Pocket Legends and Star Legends

This week my job was a bit harder than it usually is. This week I had to revisit Pocket Legends and Star Legends, the entirety of the Spacetime Studios lineup, in order to catch the updates and differences since both games were recently adapted to play within the Chrome browser.

See, the device that you play an MMO on does make a difference. While I haven't found many players who have an issue with moving up to a finer machine with a larger screen, I almost always receive a few comments in any of my mobile MMO columns about the lack of fun involved with playing anything on a screen that will fit in your hand. While I understand the difficulty in downgrading your monitor size, the mobile market's reception of Pocket Legends surprised even the developer. People are playing it, for many hours, on screens that are very small.

But now we have the ability to play it in our browser. Does it make a difference in the experience? Click past the cut and I'll let you know.

The Daily Grind: Do you try to grab names on launch?

      Posted: 18 Dec 2011 05:00 AM PST

Now and forever, it is I that will be known as Steve!
Early access for Star Wars: The Old Republic started earlier this week, and that meant that Tuesday evening saw me taking part in a time-honored tradition, namely speeding through the character creator several times in hopes of getting the names that I wanted. I got pretty lucky; out of the eight names I was hoping for, six were available and two were available with just a slight tweak, which was pretty good all around.

Of course, these are all characters that I plan on playing in the very near future, but it was still a big batch of character names right out of the starting gate. Do you do the same? When a new game comes out, do you rush to nab the names of characters you already know you want to play? Do you wait and see if you can get certain names or try to grab the same ones? Or are character names just not that important to you in the long run?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The timing is probably purely coincidental, but EverQuest II's transition to free-to-play is coming at the best time of the year in Norrath: Frostfell! EverQuest II has always done a lovely job tying together seasonal events with the larger lore of Norrath, but Frostfell is the biggest event of the year. Now, everyone can check it out for free, and it's a great way to get acclimated to the game and get some really nice (and valuable) items in the process.

In this week's Tattered Notebook, we'll cover the must-sees for Frostfell. From snowball fights to snow cloud mounts to heavy-breathing Gigglegibbers dressed as Santa, this is a list you'll definitely want to check twice.

The Mog Log: Forward impressions of patch 1.20

As I write this, patch 1.20 is not actually live just yet. All I have to go on is a monster list of patch notes and the various previews we've been given thus far. Of course, by the time you're reading this, the patch will have released, and I have no doubt that some people will have played through everything it has to offer a couple of times over. So I'm working at a bit of a disadvantage.

In some ways I'm actually not in that terrible a spot. The last two patches have done great things for Final Fantasy XIV, and the patch notes are long enough that I can at least make some reasonable guesses about how things will play out. So I'm going to do precisely that, with the obvious caveat that I might be punching at the wind. Long story short: I'm confident about this patch; only a few bits irritate me.

Illyriad keeps players on edge with new live event

Who says MMOs don't have live events anymore? Triple-A titles, listen up: Your F2P brethren are doing what you won't. On Thursday, the citizens of Illyriad awoke to find that a massive rift had opened in the Northern section of the in-game map. A forum post later detailed the events and told of a mage from the Circle of Five who had recently been tampering with magical uses for the body parts of animals. Soon after, a blast was "felt by all for hundreds of miles in every direction." Scouts, armies and caravans were dispatched from curious cities. The next night, skeleton armies poured from the rift and attacked the investigators.

Illyriad is a free-to-play MMORTS that features city-building, resource management, deep strategy, free-for-all PvP, and a player-driven market. Thanks to HTML5, it works on any device. If dynamic live world events sound interesting to you, check the game out at the official site.

The Road to Mordor: Treasure hunting!

It's not been an insignificant week for Lord of the Rings Online, as Turbine rolled out its big holiday patch: Update 5. With it came all manner of goodies, from an instance finder to another book in our epic quest across Middle-earth. Cooks got coffee (have you had a cup of joe yet?), and I reveled in the ability to expand my sorely taxed wardrobe beyond 100 slots.

But amidst all of the excitement and analysis of the new features slid in something surprising. The night of the update, Turbine opened up its long-promised treasure hunting mini-event for a sneak peek. I joined the throngs of curious lookie-loos who made a beeline for Ered Luin and some mysterious patches of glowing soil that promised riches galore.

Treasure hunting was originally supposed to hit the game much earlier this year, but for reasons unknown, Turbine pushed it back until a later date. Personally, I was psyched that another non-combat event was on its way, so when I saw that there was an actual sneak peek of the event, I cast aside all of the shiny new content of the update to see what this was all about. While I came away with favorable impressions, it was with a slight bitter aftertaste of something not quite palatable. What could it be? Well, you're just going to have to keep reading these here fancy words to find out!

It was the best of times in The Old Republic, it was the worst of times. Even though BioWare's freshman MMO has yet to officially launch, so-called "credit farmers" are already hard at work setting up operations to sell in-game currency via third party sources. Shacknews identified one company, IGXE, as spearheading the assault on SWTOR's economy, although that company certainly is not alone in attempting to bypass the EULA.

On a brighter note, the Collector's Edition of the game has already shipped to many (but not all) customers, and Darth Hater has a massive 20-minute unboxing video to show off all of the physical goodies that come inside. If you're curious or are still waiting for your own CE to arrive, you can view the action-packed video after the jump.

Retrospective: The Five Secrets of Suikoden's Success

Suikoden's simple formula for a great RPG has seemingly been lost to the ages.

By: Jeremy Parish December 17, 2011

In December 1996, Konami did something unprecedented, at least for them: They released a role-playing game in the U.S. The company was no stranger to the RPG genre, with both traditional variants (Super Famicom's Madara) and action-based iterations (King Kong for Famicom) under its belt, but those games had never escaped the irresistible gravity of the Japanese market. This new effort, Suikoden, was the company's bid to develop an international RPG presence. Launched in the early days of the PlayStation, Suikoden arrived in the fallow period between the Super NES's RPG pinnacle and Final Fantasy VII's explosive debut.

While Suikoden wasn't a runaway hit, it did well enough that Konami turned it into a steady franchise, releasing four direct sequels and almost half a dozen spin-offs over the following decade. Its sweeping sense of history and enormous cast of characters earned the series a modest but passionate fanbase. Though the series has become something of a footnote these days -- a PSP spin-off is due in Japan in 2012, though its prospects for Western localization are grim due to the platform's effective demise here -- the games still command a loyal fan base who look back at Suikoden's heyday and remember all it did right. On the occasion of the original game's 15th anniversary, let's look back at what made Suikoden both great and unique among its peers.
