iPhone Banned in Syria

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 03:23 PM PST

iphoneAs peaceful protests continue in Syria, the regime of president Bashar al-Assad had what must have seemed like a bright idea in the heat of the moment. As of today, Syria has banned the iPhone from the nation. Customs inspectors in the country will no longer allow shipments of the device in, and current users are strongly encouraged to stop using the iPhone. Take that, democracy.

Syrian protesters are obviously using more devices that the iPhone to plan and report the happenings there. However, it turns out that it is a surprisingly popular device among the crowds in the streets. Several iPhone apps have been used heavily to disseminate news on the brutal Syrian crackdown. This is hardly the first time a regime has gone after technology to stifle protests, but it could be the most shortsighted.

No other mobile devices have been affected by the new rules, so we don't imagine this is going to have a significant effect. Still, this could be one more reason for security forces and police to detain protesters. Despite the governments best efforts, people are still managing to access social networks to keep their movement alive.

Piracy Remains Legal in Switzerland After New Study

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 03:04 PM PST

jollyThings work a little differently in Switzerland. The Swiss copyright laws allow people to download copyrighted material for personal use, which has had the entertainment industry up in arms for years. Amid all the claims of billions in losses, the Swiss government undertook a study to find out to affect of piracy on entertainment sales. The results? Well, let's just say that the Swiss won't be changing their permissive copyright laws anytime soon.

The study does stipulate that the internet is a totally different kind of distribution mechanism that allows users to access a raft of copyrighted content. However, the study goes on to explain that in Switzerland, piracy appears to have no negative impact on the amount of money people spend on entertainment. A Dutch study was also cited which shows that pirates often spend more money in the long run.

The Swiss appear fine with the reality that one-third of the adult population engages in piracy. The report says this is just the price that must be paid for progress. The entertainment lobby also got a stern warning of things to come from the Swiss report. "Winners will be those who are able to use the new technology to their advantages and losers those who missed this development and continue to follow old business models," it said. Burn.

ARM-Based Windows 8 Tablets Could Lose Desktop

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 02:50 PM PST

win8According to Microsoft-watcher Paul Thurrott, Microsoft may be working toward a future where Windows 8 tablets ship without the Windows desktop. Users of these ARM-based devices would be limited to the Metro interface. This would be a significant departure from Redmond's previous "no compromises" strategy that would have provided users both operating environments on ARM systems.

If true, Microsoft will have essentially bifurcated the Windows 8 product into two completely different lines. The x86 users would have Metro and the regular desktop, but could ARM users get by in just Metro? it is unclear what this means for convertible tablet devices, but it's probably still going to come down to what chip a device is running.

Removing the Windows desktop from ARM devices could allow them to be marketed differently. They would be the iPad competitor that Microsoft has been thus far unable to deliver. It would also have the added benefit of simplifying user interaction with the device. Do you think a Windows 8 tablet without the desktop will compare favorably to the iPad?

EFF Seeks DMCA Exemption for Console Modders

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 02:01 PM PST

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is urging the U.S. Copyright Office to renew and expand exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that were granted last year in response to EFF's requests to protect certain modding rights. Specifically, EFF played a critical role in making it legal to "jailbreak" smartphones, and the organization wants the DMCA to grant the same freedom for electronic tablets and videogame consoles.

"In the exemption requests filed today, EFF asked the Copyright Office to protect the 'jailbreaking' of smartphones, electronic tablets, and video game consoles – liberating them to run operating systems and applications from any source, not just those approved by the manufacturer," EFF said in a statement. "EFF also asked for legal protections for artists and critics who use excerpts from DVDs or downloading services to create new, remixed works. These exemptions build on and expand exemptions that EFF won last year for jailbreakers and remix artists."

EFF Intellectual Property Director Corynne McSherry criticized the way the DMCA is written, saying it's "supposed to block copyright infringement. But instead it can be misused to threaten creators, innovators, and consumers, discouraging them from making full and fair use of their own property." Modder Geroge Hotz knows this all too well. Hotz is a notorious iOS modder who got himself in hot water when he hacked a PlayStation 3 console and then posted root keys of the PS3 on his website. He essentially figured out a way to jailbreak the PS3, which would have been legal on a smartphone. He settled a subsequent lawsuit with Sony and later landed a job with Facebook.

If EFF gets its way, the simple act of modding a console would not be illegal, though using a jailbroken console to circumvent copyright would still run afoul of the law.

"Technology has evolved over the last three years, and so it's important to expand these exemptions to cover the real-world uses of smartphones, tablets, video game consoles, DVDs, and video downloads," EFF Senior Staff Attorney Marchia Hofmann said in a statement.

Carrier IQ Controversy: Your Phone Is Spying On You, And Your Wireless Carrier's To Blame

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 11:44 AM PST

Have you heard about that nasty little bit of software called Carrier IQ? A security researcher by the name of Trevor Eckhart discovered the mysterious software running on his Android phone earlier this month, dug deeper into things, and found Carrier IQ, a monitoring program that comes preinstalled on several phones, tracks all kinds of data – including HTTP requests, GPS location and app usage information – and in many cases, can't be turned off. Millions of phones are affected. Carrier IQ's been found on phones from Samsung, HTC and Apple– but wireless carriers could be the real force behind the rootkit-like software.

Carrier IQ has been found on a bunch of HTC phones, and when ZDNET – who is maintaining an excellently updated article on which companies are using Carrier IQ, and which aren't – asked them about it, HTC basically fingered the blame at wireless providers.

Carrier IQ is required on devices by a number of U.S carriers so if consumers or media have any questions about the practices relating to, or data collected by, Carrier IQ we'd advise them to contact their carrier.

Well, that sucks. Which companies, exactly, are among those "number of U.S. carriers" that force smartphone manufacturers to include Carrier IQ? Again, ZDNet has the answer. AT&T and Sprint have both owned up to using data provided by Carrier IQ to "improve wireless network and service performance" and "understand device performance," respectively. Apple also said they include Carrier IQ in the iPhone, although they say they "stopped supporting Carrier IQ with iOS 5 in most of our products and will remove it completely in a future software update."

On the other hand, Verizon Wireless, RIM, Nokia, Google and Microsoft have all come out and said flat-out that they have no affiliation whatsoever with Carrier IQ, either the company or the software. T-Mobile has yet to comment on the situation.

In related news, Senator Al Franken is demanding that Carrier IQ (the company) fork over details about the program, and a class-action lawsuit has been filed against HTC, Samsung and Carrier IQ in Missouri earlier today.

Head to Head: Chromebook vs. 'Jolibook'

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 11:36 AM PST

The Chromebook is nice, but is it $500 nice? Is it really better than spending a few bucks to upgrade an old netbook into a comparable browser-based portable PC?

We took a year-old Samsung NF310 netbook with a dual-core Atom CPU, upped the RAM to 2GB, and replaced its hard drive with a 20GB Intel Larson Creek SSD, then installed Joli OS 1.2. We pitted our creation against a Samsung Series 5 Chromebook to see whether a homebrew 'Jolibook' can hang.

Round 1: Hardware

The build quality of the Samsung Chromebook is excellent, with a bright, 12.1-inch screen, powerful (if tiny) speakers, a comfortable keyboard, and a classy look. Netbook hardware varies, but the NF310, with its dual-core Atom processor, is one of the nicer 10.1-inch netbooks we've tested. Besides upgrading the RAM to 2GB, we dropped in a 20GB SSD to create a level playing field with the Chromebook's 16GB internal flash storage. The Chromebook is heavier at three pounds, four ounces (compared to the NF310's two pounds, 13 ounces), but the Chromebook's battery life is better.

Every key on the Chromebook's keyboard maps to a specific Chrome OS function (or a normal keyboard key); not so with the NF310, whose function keys we couldn't get working in Joli OS without downloading obscure Debian packages.

Winner: Chromebook

Round 2: Software

Chrome OS works flawlessly on a Chromebook, while Joli OS works to varying degrees on a huge number of devices, albeit with some quirks. For example we couldn't adjust the screen brightness on our Samsung NF310 no matter what we tried.

Chrome OS is the Chrome browser with a rudimentary local file tree and some media playback support. All apps are either browser extensions or web apps. Chromebooks currently lack support for many third-party plugins, like Microsoft Silverlight, Sun Java, or the Unity Web Player.

Joli OS includes a build of Chromium, so it has everything Chrome OS has. But it's built on Linux, so it also supports true local apps like OpenOffice—or any Ubuntu app, as long as you can dig into the OS's substructure to find the package manager.

Winner: Jolibook

Round 3: Performance

Performance is a tricky metric, and on systems like these—where we can't exactly run our Far Cry 2 benchmark or even Quake III—feel is more important than raw numbers. Here the Chromebook excels perhaps because it tries to do so much less. The Chromebook boots in around 10 seconds and resumes in three. Our Jolibook took 20 seconds to get to the login screen, and another 20 past that to load the Jolicloud desktop.

Using the Chrome browser, pages loaded more snappily and we could work with more tabs without slowdowns in the Chromebook than in our Jolibook—though, of course, we couldn't do anything else. The Jolibook's local app performance didn't feel particularly zippy, but it's a netbook, after all. What it can do, the Chromebook can do fast. What it can't do, it can't do at all.

Winner: Chromebook

Round 4: Flexibility

A Chromebook is a Chromebook. If you spring for the 3G version (or have a smartphone with a tethering plan), it can be a Chromebook anywhere, but it'll never be more than that. A Jolibook could conceivably have a 3G radio in it (if your original hardware supports it), and you can always dual-boot Joli OS with Windows 7, swap out the hard drive for a different one, change your operating system, use Bluetooth accessories, etc. You can also keep your Jolicloud desktop synched to the web and use it from any computer as a sort of personal start page. That's a nice touch (though you can do much the same thing with Chrome Sync).

Winner: Jolibook

Round 5: Price

You can get a 12.1-inch Samsung Series 5 Chromebook for $430 (without 3G) or $500 (with 100MB of 3G data per month). Acer's 11.6-inch AC700 Wi-Fi Chromebook is just $350. Each of these models ships with 16GB of local storage, 2GB DDR3 RAM, and a dual-core Atom processor. If you already have a netbook, you paid your $350-$500 last year or the year before, in which case, your cash outlay is limited to $20 for a 2GB RAM SODIMM, $100 for a 20GB or 40GB SSD, and a few bucks for a flash drive to put the Joli OS installer on. Not bad for giving a netbook a new lease on life.

Winner: Jolibook if you have an old notebook and are pressed for cash; Chromebook otherwise

And the Winner Is…

After using both the Chromebook and our homebrew Jolibook for several weeks each, we have to give the edge to the Chromebook. Its instant-on boots and resumes, excellent battery life, and sheer minimalism make it our note-taker of choice. And the 3G radio on the $500 model is handy in a pinch. Joli OS is a fine way to spruce up an old netbook, especially if you're short on cash, but the Chromebook spoiled us and we don't want a cobbled-together alternative.

Verizon Gobbles Up Cable Companies' Wireless Spectrum For $3.6 Billion

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 10:52 AM PST

Wireless spectrum: it's what powers mobile communications and wireless carriers have an insatiable taste for more, more, MORE of it. The need for more spectrum is the reason Sprint keeps bailing Clearwire out of financial hot water and why AT&T is pushing so hard for a merger with T-Mobile. Verizon has pretty much been the only major carrier that hasn't engaged in major spectrum-related deals this year – until now, that is. Today, Verizon announced it has reached a $3.6 billion deal to gobble up 122 spectrum licenses from three major cable companies.

Time Warner, Comcast and Bright House networks each own a portion of SpectrumCo, the company selling Verizon the spectrum licenses. The deal isn't straight up cash-for-spectrum, either; Verizon Wireless and the cable companies will be able to sell each other's products, too. In addition, CNET reports that both Comcast and Time Warner, who currently offer wireless broadband services that tap into Clearwire's network, will be cutting ties with that company over the next six months and switching whole-hog over to Verizon's network.

Verizon isn't being coy what it wants the spectrum for, either. "Spectrum is the raw material on which wireless networks are built, and buying the AWS spectrum now solidifies our network leadership into the future, and will enable us to bring even better 4G LTE products and services to our customers," CEO Dan Mead said in the press release.

Of course, the sale still has to be approved by the FCC, and if the FCC's recent slap-down of the AT&T – T-Mobile merger is any indication, that approval may fall under heavy scrutiny by regulators.

Browser Extension of the Week: Add to Amazon Wish List

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 10:47 AM PST

wishlistThe holiday season is upon us, and with it comes the horror of holiday shopping. At this time of year, thinking about others and spending your hard earned dough on them is pretty much requisite. While this might paste a look of joy on your nearest and dearest, every gift you purchase means there's a little less coin in the coffers for the stuff you want. This means that instead of being able to buy what you want when you want, you're gonna have to wait. Fortunately, Add to Amazon Wish List for Chrome will help you to keep your backlog of personal indulgences in check.

Available for Chrome, Add to Amazon Wish List allows users to build a list of material needs and desires from any site on the internet. See a hat on Etsy that your head simply can't live without? Just click the Add to Amazon Wish List located in your navigation bar to capture that lid's details as well as any notes you'd like to include for future reference.

To review your wish list at any time, simply visit an Amazon website, click on the Wish List link in the site's button bar and BOOM, you're ready to engage in a bit of lustful capitalism.

Be sure to check back with us every Thursday for another edition of Maximum PC's Browser Extension of the Week.

AMD Issues Another Incremental Graphics Driver Update (Catalyst 11.11c)

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 10:30 AM PST

AMD has released another performance driver (yes, again) for its Catalyst 11.11 package. And once again, improved performance in Elder Scrolls: Skyrim takes center stage. New in Catalyst 11.11c is better CrossFireX performance scaling for AMD Radeon HD 5000/6000 series cards in Skyrim, 2-7 percent better performance in single GPU configurations, and a resolved corruption issue when enabling MSAA on Radeon HD 6970 cards.

Catalyst 11.11c also addresses other popular games, including Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Batman: Arkham City, Rage, and Battlefield 3. In addition to improved performance, AMD packed quite a few bug fixes for Rage, everything from missing shadows to geometry corruption that's sometimes seen in the Bash TV entrance.

Netgame releases their newest game called Rise of Dragonian Era, also known as R.O.D.E.

R.O.D.E. is a fantasy game of mystical characters and creatures where dragons hold the symbol of great power. It takes place in a world separated by two lord dragons, Firean (representing the West) and Azurian (representing the East).

Both nations have four distinct classes; Warrior, Rogue, Cleric, and Mage. Warriors are skillful in using melee weapons like one or two handed swords. Rogues are built for the strength of range attacks using bows. Clerics in the other hand, cast spell using their books. They use elements of earth and air to both attack and shield themselves during chaos. Lastly, the classes of Mage are worshipers of the dark side. They are skilled in summoning spells using their crystal ball. They use dark magic to create continuous damage which effectively leaves enemies with endless pain.

R.O.D.E. also features significant mounts throughout the game. These mounts are both crawling and winged creatures made with 3 different types; Ground, Aerial, and Dragon type. With specific mounts and/or levels, players may enjoy various systems within the game.

One specially designed system is called the Dragon Riding System where players can take part in aerial combat as they ride their dragons in the sky.(See Attached screen shots)

Flying a dragon is controlled by players and dragon has the highest travel speed in game which makes them the most popular.

Other systems include, Castle Siege, Devilo System, Complex Class System, Quests, Auction House, Region War (PvP battling between the two nations), and many more exciting plays.

The world of R.O.D.E. delivers pain, agony, and destruction.  But adversity brings perseverance and unity to those who stand on a common ground and suffer the same fate. This marks the beginning of a new era.

Conquer Online's "Invasion of Pirates" Expansion Introduces New Class, New Skills, a New Map, and Much More!

HONG KONG – December 1, 2011

NetDragon WebSoft Inc. announces a new expansion for its popular free to play MMORPG, Conquer Online. Coming soon in January 2012, "Invasion of Pirates" will introduce a brand new map, new monsters, new quests and most importantly, the new Pirate class, which offers an entirely new play style with an all-new set of weapons and powerful pirate skills.

A piece of mysterious land has been recently discovered by Conquer's adventurers, with countless treasures long buried by the ancestors deep down in the dark sea. Bands of pirates have moored their ships at the shore, threatening to disturb the peace and take what they claim is theirs. They have said that they are here for the ancient treasure, guarded by monsters only spoken of in myths and tales that children fear. The land has been thrown into panic. No one knows where these pirates have come from, or where they learned of this hidden treasure, but they seem to have a deep connection with the land, especially with the strange monks from the mountains. There must be a darker secret hidden beneath all this…

Said to be the most devastating force that's ever appeared on the shores of Conquer, pirates are strong enough to destroy whatever stands in the way of making their fortune. Guns and pistols are their tools, looting and pillaging is their nature! Although they can easily take down the enemies from a distance without being hurt, they are not indestructible. Will the holy powers be able stop this evil force's invasion?

The time is coming for you to choose your side. Will you fight for treasure or will you defend against aggression? The time to make your decision is now!

Prepare yourself for the arrival of this scourge from the high seas!

Expect more details soon about the "Invasion of Pirates" expansion for Conquer Online.

Tribes: Ascend adds Team Deathmatch

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 12:31 PM PST

Tribes: Ascend is still in closed beta, but new gameplay has launched for its gunners.

Team Deathmatch is now available in the game, currently on two maps: Drydock Night and Crossfire. After the first death in the match, a flag spawns, and teams earn bonuses for each kill made while the team holds that flag. A new challenge, “First Win of the Day,” grants additional XP and token bonuses for players’ first victory each day, and a new call in, “Orbital Strike,” has been introduced. Several balance changes and bug fixes were also implemented.

Tribes: Ascend is published by Hi-Rez Studios, which also publishes Global Agenda.

EA-BioWare acquires KlickNation, rebrands it BioWare Social

All the cool kids are into social gaming these days, so it should come as no surprise when some of the bigger gaming firms start testing the waters. BioWare looks to be next on that list according to a report at GamesIndustry.biz that details Electronic Arts' acquisition of KlickNation.

KlickNation operates social games including SuperHero City and Six Gun Galaxy, and while the company's monthly active user base has declined from 1.3 million to 400,000, EA and BioWare see it as a growth opportunity. KlickNation's expertise in building innovative and compelling RPGs for social platforms makes them a seamless tuck-in with the BioWare team at EA," says Ray Muzyka.

The new unit has been renamed BioWare Social, and thus far the company has not announced any concrete plans relating to new or existing titles.

EverQuest II drops Age of Discovery's NDA

Here's the invisible key: You can unlock and unzip your lips to finally talk freely about the next EverQuest II expansion, Age of Discovery. Sony Online Entertainment has released us from our pinky swear promising to keep mum on the project, and now everyone is free to share their experiences.

There are a couple exceptions to the NDA dropping, however. Testers still may not share anything that's being posted in the beta forums, and no screenshots taken during the testing period may be made public.

Age of Discovery is launching on December 6th. and includes many new features to the game, including the Beastmaster class, the Freeport revamp, and the dungeon maker tool. Oh, and there's also a small matter of the entire game going free-to-play, but you knew that already. Because you didn't zip your ears closed.

He's snarky, he's tough, he's got a tank-busting missile, and apparently he's got thigh-high red go-go boots. Seriously, look at that picture above and tell us that Iron Man's not getting his fashion tips from the runway.

In any case, Marvel Universe Online is proud to reveal its next major superhero in the game's line-up, and Tony Stark is proud that you're giving him your full attention right now. MUO's Iron Man looks similar to the latest movie version, with the triangle chestpiece and ribbed design. If you're a fan of the character, comics, or movies, then this should be a thrill for you! Just try not to think about how small his waist must be to fit into that techno-armor.

This marks the latest reveal of the Marvel lineup for the game by Gazillion, which has been slowly rolling out the classic characters for a couple months now.

The Firing Line: Getting into Global Agenda

The Firing Line - header with various shooter avatars
OK, so you've heard about this whole Global Agenda thing, and you've talked yourself into giving it a shot. It's completely free-to-play from start to finish these days, and the Unreal graphics, sci-fi setting, and strange mixture of hyper-competitive PvP and ultra-accessible PvE have always held a certain appeal.

You're not sure, but you think it's kind of an MMO, given that it has persistent territory control, lots of quests, and plenty of progression-based gameplay. Maybe you're a pro skillz baller, or maybe the extent of your shooter knowledge is which end of the gun gets pointed at the bad guys.

Either way, you'll likely have a good time in Hi-Rez's spy-fi action title, and you'll have an even better time if you understand a few key points about the game prior to diving in.

If you've got a gamer on your Christmas list, congratulations. With the proliferation of digital download titles and services like Steam and Good Old Games, it's never been easier to put a smile on the face of your favorite geek.

This week on The MMO Report, Casey covers South Korea's Cinderella Law, Firefall's attempts at class balance, and World of Warcraft's 4.3 patch. He also suggests that "it's beginning to look a lot like riftmas" in RIFT (groan) before announcing that in honor of Minecon and Minecraft's 240 million logins per month, he will soon begin work on "Schreinercraft, a graphically minimalist, open-source game where players build, create, and customize virtual beards for their avatars." He notes that he doesn't "have any programming experience, start-up capital, or a business plan," but he "love[s] money and would enjoy having more of it." Don't we all!

Finally, he dives into Uncle Casey's Mailbag and asks readers to mail him the story of their first MMO experience for possible inclusion in a future show.

Star Wars Galaxies updates players on the end

And yet somewhere, even after the servers shut down, a twi'lek will be dancing.
December 15th. That's not the end of the world -- it's the end of multiple worlds because it's the day that Star Wars Galaxies will have its last hurrah followed by silence. But there are still a couple of weeks left, and considering that one of the game's big pushes has been the Galactic Civil War, we think it's only fair for the ending of the game's service to be accompanied by the ending of the war with a decisive victory.

On December 14th, at 9:00 p.m. PST (midnight EST), the Civil War scoreboards will close, with a final winner declared overall. This will be accompanied by server restarts, followed by a number of optional battles and skirmishes in the 15th. So spend the next two weeks getting ready for the last push to grab all the marbles because when the shutdown comes on December 15th, the war will be over... for good.

Bethesda and Interplay continue to sling stones over Fallout Online

Please stand by for a very, very long time.
There's exciting news about Fallout Online today, assuming that you think that the latest installment of the ongoing legal battle between Interplay and Bethesda qualifies as exciting news. Yes, the two companies are still at it, with Bethesda filing a new complaint against Interplay after the last victory. And as usual, depending on which company you want in charge of the game's future development, one of the companies is completely out of its mind and the other is trying to defend what it rightfully owns.

Bethesda's complaint, in essence, argues that Interplay's complaint blocked testimony that would have established Bethesda as being the party in the right beyond a shadow of a doubt. Whether or not this is accurate will be established when the companies have their date in court on December 5th, which should put an end to this mess once and for all... although if previous events show anything, it's that both Bethesda and Interplay will fight this out to the bitter end.

        Featuring the tallest geese possible.
If you're a fan of the Gundam franchise, you can definitely argue that the heart of the franchise has nothing to do with giant robots blowing one another up -- it focuses instead on the human impact of large-scale war. But if you're playing SD Gundam Capsule Fighter Online, then yeah, it's all about giant robots blowing one another up. And the new gameplay trailer embedded just past the break is meant to show off that focus to full effect.

The game is quite fittingly action-based, and the trailer shows off several of the franchise's more iconic mecha in their SD form. Also shown off in full detail are the many, many ways for players to unleash rocket-powered death upon the poor cannon fodder Zakus wandering through the map, which is somewhere between endearing and almost mean. If you're looking forward to the game when it fully launches later this month, click on past the break to check out the trailer.

Watch yer booty, mateys! No, I meant your treasure, you freaks. Jeeze. NetDragon WebSoft has announced a new expansion for its free-to-play MMORPG, Conquer Online. This update does what it says on the tin: Invasion of Pirates. Players will find themselves on a brand-new map, facing off against new monsters, discovering new quests, and playing the Pirate class.

The new class brings an entirely new playstyle with new weapons and abilities to use. And players will need every bit of firepower they can get, as bands of evil pirates arrive upon a newly discovered island in search of a dark and mysterious treasure. Of course, it's up to players to ensure that the pirates do not succeed in their mission. The expansion will go live in January 2012, so you've got plenty of time to head over to the game's official site and sign up.

Over the past year, we've touched on several tricky topics regarding guild management, yet we've never waded into the topic of actually removing someone from the guild. Granted, some of the issues we have discussed can lead to lots of frustration for guildmates, and understandably, the comments section usually contains at least one reply suggesting that a swift guild kick is the best solution.

But removing someone from the guild is a pretty big decision, and it can have a ripple effect throughout your roster that might lead to further unhappiness and drama. When is the right time to boot someone from the guild? In this week's Guild Counsel, we'll take a look at what to do when you think it might be time for a guild removal.

Trion Worlds is currently known first and foremost for RIFT, but that's not the only game the studio is working at. End of Nations, the upcoming MMORTS, has been quiet for a while, but the development team is kicking things back into motion with the launch of the "Warfront" webcast, designed to highlight news and updates about the game. And it kicks off with an appropriately exciting piece of news for fans of the game -- beta signups are now available.

Fans will need to sign up for the End of Nations newsletter before being eligible to sign up for beta testing, but that likely won't deter anyone who's followed the game this far. There's also an announcement of new previews to be found on the game's official Facebook page, with the usual social media request that you head over and throw out a "Like." While the video is fairly short, most fans have probably absconded as soon as they heard they could sign up for beta -- but if you'd like to see the full webcast first, jump on past the break.

Behind the Mask: Are grab bags a scam?

Everyone's heard of the "gift box" phenomenon. It's a common theme in F2P MMOs to release an item that doesn't have guaranteed contents and instead has a random selection from a pool of items. Sometimes there are rare bonus items inside; other times there are things the buyer didn't really want. Champions Online has taken its second foray into this territory with the Service and Cursed Grab Bags, a pair of C-Store items that grant a chance at a variety of tradable goodies.

Gift box items sell to a variety of people. Some find the idea of chance more fun, and others absolutely must have the rare items and will spend lots of money trying to get them. Are the grab bags a scam, though? After the jump, we'll look at just why that is and hopefully give you enough information to come to your own conclusion.

If you're looking for a reasonably short video primer on the history of MMOs, look no further than a series of clips recently uploaded to YouTube. According to some genre heavyweights, though, you shouldn't take all the info presented at face value. Former sandbox (and current social games) developer Raph Koster weighs in on the clips at his personal blog, and he offers up a laundry list of "oddities, errors, and omissions."

MUD pioneer Richard Bartle shows up in Koster's comment thread, and he's even more direct. "I wonder why so few of those who make this kind of documentary actually ask the people they're talking about whether what they're saying about them is factually correct? It's not like we're dead or anything," Bartle muses.

Why watch the vids, then? Mainly for the exposure to pre-2004 MMORPGs, according to Koster. The clips are "worth a look, even if only to get a rare glimpse of actual video footage from some of the older games that many folks today don't even know existed," he says. Check out all three installments after the break.

It's finally December, which means that I can go into a store and not fly into a rage when I discover that it's already playing Christmas music. It also means that it's time for Fallen Earth's December State of the Game letter. This is the first State of the Game since the title's change to F2P last month, so can you bet your hide there's a lot to cover. Marie Croall begins by talking about some of the "less sexy but ultimately critical things" that the team has been working on since the transition. Lots of bug-fixing has taken place as the Fallen Earth team works to iron out some of the kinks that arose during the F2P transition.

Meanwhile, the town of Embry got a bit of a makeover. The art team went into the city and "replaced high-poly, high-batch buildings with newer ones that will improve performance and the overall aesthetic appeal of the town." The team is also working hard at developing new content and features, such as world events, farms, and the upcoming augmentation system. Croall closes out the post with some dates: Territory control, the revamped map, new world events, and New Embry will be added to the game in mid-December, while everything else will have to wait until next year. For the full details, head on to the game's official blog.

May the score be with you: SWTOR releases one music track a day until launch [Updated]

                  SWTOR
A long time ago in a boombox far, far away... your MP3 folder was growing dusty from disuse and laughable with its lack of coolness. The IMPERIAL COMPOSERS of BioWare stepped in to quash your pitiful musical rebellion by offering you a FREE soundtrack piece every day until launch. Also, the evil gangster JABBA THE HUTT is immune to Jedi mind tricks, FYI.

This is true: As a special treat to its fans, BioWare is doling out one music track from its Star Wars: The Old Republic score every day, starting today and going until the December 20th launch. These tracks are available on both on the SWTOR Facebook page and official YouTube channel.

The first track is called The Mandalorian Blockade and is composed by Mark Griskey, Wilbert Roget II, Gordy Haab & Lennie Moore. Give it a listen after the jump!

[Update: It looks like music is not the only thing the BioWare folks have in store for you in the lead up until launch. Apparently, the team is doing at least one more round of beta testing starting tomorrow, so check your inboxes!]

The Perfect Ten: The upcoming contenders

                  Perfect Ten
While I'm on board the Star Wars: The Old Republic train (at least until SOE's Star Wars: The New Republic comes out in 2014 and forces SWTOR to shut down), I can certainly sympathize with the frustration that non-fans are feeling right about now. There are few things more annoying than not being into the latest craze -- or hating it outright -- and yet being unable to escape it.

So I'm here to say to you today that, like World of Warcraft, SWTOR isn't the be-all, end-all of the MMO field. It's a part of it, but just one part, and there are many, many others in the works as we speak. Mama always told me never to put all your eggs in one basket anyway, so I'm spreading my eggcitement across many cyber-nests.

This is the bone I'm throwing to all of you this week: a list of 10 Midichlorian-free MMOs that have me -- and should have you -- extremely buzzed about their development. In putting together this list, I realized that there are so many promising prospects that I divided them into two groups. This week I'm presenting the strongest contenders that should make it to launch with a solid product, while next time I'll list promising prospects that may be more of a long shot. I'm 47% confident that I will not forget your most-anticipated title.

CCP expands EVE's asset search functionality

EVE Online - asset search update
If EVE Online is truly spreadsheets in space as some of its detractors (and even fans) have surmised, thus far it's been a spreadsheet with fairly limited search capabilities. Now thanks to the efforts of CCP developers, finding your random crap spread across the cosmos in various New Eden station storage facilities just got a lot easier.

The latest EVE Online dev blog has the details on the asset search functionality updates, and they include new keyword searches and a complete listing of keyword values. "There [is] definitely more we can do with this in the future but we started this rather late and [we] didn't want to add lots of broken functionality, but rather a few simple options that work and cover the basics and a bit more," the dev blog explains.
