Posted: 17 Nov 2011 03:54 PM PST

Nothing speaks to the power and flexibility of the PC platform quite like game modding. Dedicated groups of hardcore fans toil for months on end to bring us a massive offering of new gameplay modes, tweaks, rebalances, texture packs, content packs, and total conversions that improve, expand, and transform the games we love.

Ok, so 90% of mods are still about furries, 3d porn, and sticking Mario's head on Darth Vader's body. But when not about lust or rampant copyright infringement, mods offer some of the most unique and interesting content in gaming. Here are some of our favorite mods from recent gaming history.

Have a favorite mod/tweak/total conversion you'd like to share? Let us know in the comments!

Third-Party Apps On Nook Tablet Are Just A URL Away

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 03:02 PM PST

nookThe Nook Color and its new brother The Nook Tablet have been more or less locked down in the Barnes and Noble provided interface. That says nothing of custom ROMs and the like, but for user that don't want to go so far there is another option on the new Tablet. According to some industrious users, the web browser can be used to download apps. The process is far from perfect, but it's better than nothing.

The option to install third-part apps is initially hidden, but attempting to install an app will bring it up. After that, users are able to grab APK packages from the web to install. Adding the Amazon Appstore makes the whole process easier, and as a bonus it is an affront to everything the Nook stands for.

Most third-party apps won't show up on the home screen, but can be searched for with the "n" hardware button. Users report varying levels of success with third-party apps, but getting a custom home screen on the Tablet apparently makes the things easier and faster. Hit the link above for full instructions.

Report: Amazon Phone Coming In Late 2012.

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 02:45 PM PST

amazonIt's good policy to take analyst predictions with a big lump of salt, but a new projection from Citi Research jives with the seeming direction of the mobile market. According to the report, Amazon is actively preparing to design a sell an Android phone. However, the report goes on to state that it isn't expected to arrive until late 2012.

Amazon will reportedly work with several companies involved in Kindle production to design and manufacture the device, which will use Qualcomm radios and TI OMAP processors. The report calls out OMAP4 as the chip of choice, but in a year's time, OMAP4 will be positively ancient. The report could not confirm Android as the OS, but we have to assume it would be Amazon's specific flavor of Android. Amazon is rumored to be looking at a $150-170 build cost, which is in line with other vendors.

The place Amazon could make an impact is in consumer pricing. If the company is willing to lose money on each device, it could be a big seller that gets users into its ecosystem. Amazon would make up the loss on the back end, just like on the Kindle Fire. What say you? Real, or bunk?

Android 4.0 Asks Users To Join Google+, Add A Credit Card

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 02:32 PM PST

icsNow that users are getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in their hands for the first time, one change has caught everyone's attention. When booting up an ICS phone for the first time, the device no longer just asks for a Google account sign-in. Android 4.0 will offer the user an opportunity to join Google+ and add a credit card to Android Market right there.

This could be huge for Google, which is seeing over half a million Android activations each and every day. Even though the number of ICS devices at first will be small, that's a lot more users getting hooked on Google+ right away. While users have been inputting billing details into the Android Market since paid apps first went live, this new method will get people into the ecosystem right away.

It's taken time, but Google has built a tightly integrated ecosystem of services on Android. Users can do their social networking, music purchasing, and video viewing within Google's cloud. Do you think this is going to work in Google's favor, or will users be put off by Google's insistence?

AMD Tweaks Processor Prices, Introduces New Socket FM1 Processor

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 01:00 PM PST

Oh, AMD, you wiley stage magicians. While the company was busy showing off its Opteron 6200 and 4200 enterprise processors with one metaphorical hand earlier this week, the other metaphorical hand was secretly tweaking prices on several of its processors while everyone was distracted. Heck, they even introduced a new quad-core processor and next to nobody noticed! Penn and Teller, eat your hearts out.

In a somewhat unusual move, AMD raised the price of its dual-core A4-3300 and A4-3400 APUs by a couple of bucks apiece. It wasn't all bad news, however: the tri-core A6-3500 dropped down to $85 – a $4 decrease – while the six-core FX-6100 saw a full $10 shaved off of its price, bringing it down to $155.

The new addition to the CPU lineup, the quad-core, 3GHz Athlon II X4 651, comes in at $92. Each of the cores has a 1MB L2 cache, and CPU-World.com (which broke the story) points out that it is "the highest clocked model for socket FM1." No word yet on when you'll actually be able to buy it, though.

Past and Present Geek Heroes: 8 Innovators and Legends

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 12:20 PM PST

The adventures of Sherlock Holmes have been wowing us with his fierce intellect, uncanny forensic prowess and rampant drug abuse since 1887. In 1939, Batman hit the scene, filling the criminals of Gotham with dread thanks to his highly developed detective skills, an encyclopedic knowledge of multiple sciences, wicked gadgets and a deep grief-fuelled psychosis. Montgomery Scott —Scotty—the beloved Chief Engineer of the U.S.S Enterprise: Thanks to his knowledge of particle physics, warp theory and a lifetime's worth of hands-on experience, he was able to pluck his crew mates from the clutches of a fiery death countless times. Sadly, he too had his faults: routinely lied to his superior officers about repair times and spent his off-hours soaking himself in scotch, whiskey and something green? Yeah…

Don't we geeks deserve a better class of hero? If our heroes are flawed, can't they at least be real people? We'd like to think so. There have been so many scientists, innovators and educators throughout history that deserve to be elevated higher than the fictional ideals we idolize and talk about on a daily basis. To give you an idea of what we're talking about, we've put together a short list of eight real-life geek heroes who, while never doing battle with the Klingons, jumped from rooftop to rooftop or solved an crime that confounded Scotland Yard, still managed to make the lives of thousands—even millions of people in some cases—a little bit brighter.

Bill Gates

Love him or hate him, there's no denying that William Henry Gates was one of the most influential thinkers and industrialists of the  20th century. Gates is, despite his decades in the public eye something of an enigma: a man so intelligent that through his genius he was able to nurture Microsoft into one of the largest corporate entities the world has ever known, yet for all of his intellect has never managed to find a flattering haircut. Gate's passion for technology and aggressive business tactics led to Microsoft powered products being baked into the desktop and portable computing hardware in the world today. While there were certainly a few missteps under Gate's watch of the company (Microsoft Bob? Windows ME? We're looking at you), and the odd BSOD there's no denying that had it not been for his influence and vision, the computing world might well have been a much less user-friendly place than the one we all take for granted today.

Even before Gates decided to slowly phase himself out of from his position as Microsoft's Big Kahuna in 2006, the nerd armour he'd worn while storming the ramparts of Silicon Valley for close to three decades had given way to a surprisingly soft pair of philantrophic footie pyjamas on several occasions.  In 1994, he sold a good chunk of his Microsoft stock and used the money to found the William H. Gates Foundation. Six years later, Gates and his wife Melinda opted to combine their charitable efforts and create the cleverly named Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which with it's $37 billion endowment has done a tremendous amount of work to provide healthcare and education to the impovershed. Today, their Foundation is the largest transparently operated charity in the world. Anyone wishing to contribute to the foundation are encouraged to check into how their money will be spent and are given the means to do so.

Bill Gates is a Geek Hero in the most basic of terms. With his burning passion for technology, and the occasional hankering for a game of bridge, Gates is most assuredly a geek. What makes him heroic aren't his material passions, but his passion for something much more important: The improvement of mankind, a cause he and his spouse are so dedicated to, they were willing to invest their own fortunes in an effort to see notable change in the fortunes of thousands of men, women and children in their own lifetimes. Let's see Batman pull that off.

Dr. Frederick Banting

Sure, Canada might be best known its Tim Hortons Coffee, lousy winters, and snipers but for diabetics around the world Canada is also the country the gave birth to their salvation. Frederick Banting was born in a small rural town 37 miles north of Toronto in 1891, and by 1916, had graduated from medical school. Banting joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps and served overseas during the First Wold War with the 4th Canadian Division in France where he spent two years trying to save the lives of wounded and dying soldiers. While operating on a patient, Banting himself was wounded by shrapnel from an exploding German shell. Just like Honey Badger, Banting didn't care—he just kept on working. For his efforts, Dr. Banting was awarded with the Military Cross.

While working as a part-time university instructor in 1920, Banting stumbled upon his life work while reading an old medical journal. After reading about the pancreatic secretions, he remembered that in medical school it had been discussed that the organ oozed a substance that was thought to regulate the amount of sugar in a body's blood stream. With the aid of student research assistant by the name of Charles Best, Banting set to work to unravel the organ's mysteries. By 1921 Banting had proven that insulin could control diabetes found in dogs. That same year, with the aid of a bio-chemist, Banting moved to human trials of the drug. Their first test subject was a 14 year old boy dying of diabetes. Using an insulin extract that Banting's research team had pulled from the pancreas of an ox, the patient recovered, proving that their research had been a success. Since then, Banting's discovery has not only saved the lives of millions of diabetics around the world, but also improved the overall quality of their lives.

Now there's a geek with some tight science that's worth looking up to.

Galileo Galilei

Depending on who you ask, Galileo is credited as being the father of modern physics, the father of the modern science, or the father of modern observational astronomy. That's a whole lotta baby daddy action for one man. Born in 1564, these days he's best known for his belief in heliocentrisim—the belief that the earth, along with the rest of the planets in the solar system, revolve around a stationary sun.

Back in Galileo's day, that was dangerous crazy talk. The Catholic Church had the last word in most matters back then, and as the Bible stated "the Lord set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved" it was their view point that the Sun and the rest of the universe rotated around the Earth.  The Church wasn't thrilled to have anyone, no matter how intelligent they were, try to prove otherwise. In the face of an angry Pope, and an investigation by the Roman Inquisition that led the church to try him for suspicion of heresy in 1633, Galileo still maintained that his theory of a heliocentric solar system was correct. Due to his beliefs, Galileo was found""vehemently suspect of heresy", which in an era where the Catholic Church held a substantial amount of political power, was a bad thing. Galileo was sentenced to life in prison by the Inquisition, but later was communed to living under house arrest where he remained until his death in 1642 at the age of 77. Despite the fact that his belief in heliocentrisim was proven to be correct, it wasn't until 400 years after his death that Galileo received an apology for how he had been treated by the Vatican.

For his unflappable faith in science even in the face of serious social and personal repercussions, we're declaring this telescope-loving science geek a hero. May he serve as a fearless example of dedication in the face of adversity to us all.

Louis Pasteur

Born as the son of a leather tanner in 1822, Louis Pasteur grew up to be an super geek of epic proportions. After a brief dalliance as a professor of physics in France, Pasteur became a professor of chemistry at the University of Strasbourg, where he - along with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch - came to be regarded as one of the founders of microbiology.

After watching three of his five children die of typhoid, Pasteur allowed the pain of his loss to drive him to find treatments and cures for a number of sicknesses and diseases like anthrax and Puerperal fever, as well as diseases in a wide variety of animals, and a vaccine for rabies. Additionally, Pasteur discovered that by heating foods like wine, beer, or milk to a specific temperature and then immediately cooling it, it was possible to slow the growth of harmful microbial growth. This process, which has come to be known as—you guessed it—pasteurization, not only ensures that the foods subjected to the process sour at a much slower rate but also are much less likely to contain viable pathogens which could harbour disease.

When he wasn't busy curing what ails us, Pasteur also managed to find the time to write a doctoral thesis on the polarization of light, proved that the germ theory of disease was correct and, if you believe what True Blood has to say, became a vampire, who in 1982, was hard at work trying to create a synthetic blood substitute which would allow vampires to finally forego feeding on their next door neighbours. If all that doesn't have Geek Hero written all over it, what does?

Shigeru Miyamoto

You don't have cure anything or take sustain a shrapnel wound to be a hero (that said, it doesn't hurt). We chose to add Shigeru Miyamoto to this list for what he has managed to provide to humanity in his geeky lifetime: Joy. Responsible for creating some of the most popular video games in history, Miyamoto has kept the thumbs and fingers of gaming fanatics raw and sore for over 30 years.

While the first arcade games he was involved in enjoyed moderate success in Japan, Miyamoto will always be remembered as the man who brought stories to video games. As most folks know, Miyamoto's game Donkey Kong features a plumber (although he was originally imagined to be a carpenter, go figure), a woman and a giant gorilla. What you might not know is that they started off their lives, in Miyamoto's head, as a reworking of Popeye, Bluto and Olive Oyl, and the love triangle the three characters had long suffered through in the Popeye comic strips and short films. As thin as the game's back story was, it was more than anyone had ever attempted before.

Until the advent of Donkey Kong, video games were typically built first and given an explanation and a name later. Thanks to Miyamoto, developers were forced to up their game and provide a reason for why what was happened in their products was transpiring—a move that helped to transition a quarter-eating curiosity into the entertainment phenomenon that it is today. After completing Donkey Kong, Miyamoto took the game's protagonist along with him, and transformed the pixelated little fellow into the most successful, and best loved characters in gaming history: Mario. Since then, Miyamoto has gone on to either create or produce well over one hundred other video games, many of which are considered to be amongst the finest ever made. If that's not enough to prove his geeky worth, when he's not hard at work finding new ways to let us stay at play, Miyamoto spends his time playing the mandolin and banjo, breeding dogs and, just for fun, attempting to guess the size of random objects.

For everything he's done for the geeks who play, develop and generally love video games as we know them today, Shigeru Miyamoto is an unabashed real life Geek Hero.

Larry Ellison

Thanks to the success of Oracle, the enterprise software company he co-found and currently sits as CEO of, Larry Ellison is the third richest person in the United States (he's estimated to be worth roughly $33 billion dollars). An intelligent and outspoken individual, Ellison is known for his love of tennis, expensive sports cars, pricey personal jets, insanely expensive watercraft, and of course, in response to hearing that Hewlett Packard had fired Mark Hurd, stating ""The H.P. board just made the worst personnel decision since the idiots on the Apple board fired Steve Jobs many years ago."

But did you know that, much like Bill Gates, he's also responsible for shovelling massive amounts of cash into charitable causes? Looking past the fact that Ellison was ordered by the courts to pay $100 million dollars to charity as a penalty after being caught up in an insider trading scandal, in 2004, Forbes reported that he donated $151,092,103 to various charities. He also pledged to provide Harvard University with a $115 million dollar endowment, which he took back… and then offered again. On top of all of this, Ellison also signed on with The Giving Pledge—a campaign designed to convince the most affluent individuals in the United States to give up 50% or more of their fortunes in the name of philanthropic causes.

In Larry Ellison's case, it's not the fact that he decided to dish out cash to those in need that makes him a geek hero—it's the fact that based on his past behaviours, he gave the money against his better nature. In doing something wonderful despite himself, he serves as an example to us all.

Salman Khan

No, not the actor, the other guy. With three degrees—a BS in Mathematics, another in electrical engineering and one in computer science—from M.I.T., it goes without saying that Salman Khan is a pretty smart guy. Khan's career in education began back in 2004 when he began tutoring his cousin to help her with her math. He was so good at it that, in no time, friends and other members of his family were asking him to help their children with their educations as well.

By 2006, Khan elected to set up a YouTube account so that anyone who needed his help could have it, bringing Khan's easy to understand video lessons about Math science and physics into the mainstream. At the time,  Khan was working as a successful hedge fund manager but in late 2009 he found that he received such a degree of satisfaction from teaching, he quit his job and founded the Khan Academy.

Today, Khan's educational videos receive thousands of hits on a regular basis and help students from around the world to better themselves through a more through understanding of subjects they once found vexing. Khan has expanded the Khan Academy's curriculum to include a wide variety of topics including biology, American civics, calculus, history, chemistry, computer science, and finance. Best of all, the Khan Academy's 2400+ videos are available to students and educators from around the world free of charge, making the gifts that only an excellent education can provide something everyone can possess.

A master of multiple academic disciplines who shares the wealth? Yeah, that's a geek hero in our books.

Leonardo Da Vinci

One definition of the word 'geek' is someone who has chosen concentration rather than conformity. Such an individual becomes so knowledgable and passionate about a given topic that they stand outside of the mainstream of society. With this in mind, there's never been a bigger geek than Leonardo Da Vinci.

During the Renaissance, Da Vinci was a Renaissance man's Renaissance man, with passions and aptitudes for mathematics, music, engineering, science, art, cartography, writing, architecture and invention. Five hundred years before they were ever brought to life, Da Vinci conceptualized the manned tank and helicopter, and envisioned methods by which men could fly like a bird that are echoed in design of many aircraft to this day.

Also considered by many to be the finest painter and sculptor of his era, and it shows: One look at the Mona Lisa or The Last Supper and you know that when it came to paint, the man had it going on. Da Vinci brought his artistic skills to bear on his scientific ventures as well. His notes on anatomy and sketches of the many devices he envisioned were a thing of beauty — so much so that the 13,000 pages of his notebooks are considered to be works of art in and of themselves.

What makes Da Vinci a geek hero? His vision and passion for the world around him. For Da Vinci, being a part of the world was not enough. He needed to understand it and improve upon it. That desire to make the world a better place is the mark of a true hero, geeky or otherwise.

Sapphire Introduces World's First Single Slot, Low Profile Radeon HD 6670

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 12:13 PM PST

Looking for a single slot, low profile Radeon HD 6670 graphics card? Up until now, your search would have been fruitless – there wasn't one. Today, there is, thanks to Sapphire. The company claims that the newest edition to its HD 6600 lineup, the Sapphire HD 6670 Low Profile, is the first graphics card ever created that fits that bill.

Now for the specs: the Sapphire HD 6670 Low Profile has (in addition, of course, to its low profile) 480 Stream Processors, 24 texture processing units and 1 GB of DDR5 RAM. That memory is clocked at 1000MHz (4GHz effective) while the GPU clocks in at 800MHz. Port-wise, there's dual-Link DVI, HDMI and VGA connections. It has both standard and low-profile back plates, so it'll be right at home either in a typical desktop or a home theater PC.

"As the core technology is low power, no external power connection is required, making this series ideal for system upgrades or mainstream PCs that do not have high end power supplies," Sapphire points out helpfully in its press release. What they don't point out is pricing or release date details. The rest of Sapphire HD 6670 cards come in at around $100 or less, though.

Browser Extension of the Week: Clearly

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 11:29 AM PST

clearlyWhen it comes making data readily available to the connected masses, the Internet's a champ. Never before has our species enjoyed so much access to information. Unfortunately, the way in which that information is typically presented--on busy, oft-times poorly designed web pages-- is often found lacking. Fortunately, the folks from Evernote have a solution: It's called Clearly, and it's our Browser Extension of the Week.

Available for a wide variety of browsers and devices, Evernote's Clearly is designed to take the dog's breakfast of ads, background imagery, and text that constitute the makeup of most webpages and translate it into a smooth, minimalist reading experience designed to sooth the savaged soul of even the most haggard web surfer. By doing away with a site's superfluous crud, Clearly makes reading online a pleasure. Aside from it's transformative qualities, Clearly also comes fully loaded with a wide range of other options and customization features. Users can tinker with the size of Clearly's on screen text, send Clearly-rendered pages to their Evernote accounts to read later, select from three different pre-rendered reading themes or even go so far as to create their own.

We're sure you'll agree that's a healthy amount of functionality for a browser extension.

Be sure to check back with us every Thursday for another edition of Maximum PC's Browser Extension of the Week.

New BitFenix Spectre Pro Performance Fan Series Really Blows

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 10:59 AM PST

Case fans are in the running for the least appreciated PC component. They're not often glamorous or sexy, but without fans, your big and burly desktop system is little more than a vertical oven for your hot running PC parts. Even if fans don't get the attention they perhaps deserve, there's still some innovation going on by those who build them, like BitFenix, which just announced its new Spectre Pro Performance Fan Series.

"After we released the Spectre Series last year, users looking primarily for a silent build were floored at just how good silent fans can be," says BitFenix Product Manager David Jarlestedt. "Now with the many unique features and design elements that we've implemented into Spectre Pro, I believe that the performance crowd is going to be even more impressed."

Using specially designed fan blades and a unique cage design, BitFenix says these fans are built to blow large amounts of air in a focused column and maintain high air pressure without being overly noisy. What's the benefit of directing air into a focused column, you ask? According to BitFenix, this minimizes diffusion and allows cool air to move past obstacles and reach critical system components to knock out your system's hotspots.

The Spectra Pro Performance Series sport Fluid Dynamic Bearings (FDB) and are available in a variety of colors and sizes ranging from 120mm to 230mm, with or without LEDs. No word on price.

The nations have banded together to build a new weapon, the Caelium Cannon, with the power to drive away these fiends – but only if it can be finished in time! Players must defend the cannon from the raiding Zerecan forces and escort it safely to the enemy's stronghold to end this threat to Karena at last.

Despite the danger, Arcan's warring factions continue to fight amongst themselves for the greatest glory, and the game's massive PvP system receives its latest upgrade with an overhaul of the popular Relic War System. Now powerful relics, including several new ones, will be more difficult to acquire but easier to upgrade, so that great risk leads to great reward. Each nation can now upgrade their relics to level 3 and take advantage of the most powerful buffs to defeat their foes – at least as long as they can defend the relics they have captured from the organized assaults of rival nations.

Pick your pran and join the fight today!  Visit the official Aika site for more information on the epic battles to come.

Eligium announces closed beta

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 04:32 PM PST

Frogster revealed today that Eligium – The Chosen One will begin its closed beta testing on December 19.

In addition, details about the mount system in Eligium were released. Mounts are initially cared for by purchasing an egg from a vendor, and then raising it. Once they reach adolescence, mounts can offer stat bonuses, but cannot carry players until they are full grown. Once full grown, these mounts can also be equipped and offer greater stat boosts. Players will be able to fight from the backs of their mounts in battle, making mounts valuable companions.

Frogster also publishes Runes of Magic.

Raise Your Mount, Soon!

Closed Beta Date Announced and First Glimpse at the Mount System

As Frogster gears up to the launch of ELIGIUM – The Chosen One, it can today unveil the starting date for the closed beta and reveal more information on one of its many features; preparing fans for their pursuit to become the chosen one.  On December 19th the closed beta will get underway, so to sign up just head over to the official website, www.eligium.com.

More information on the game's mounts has also been released, as well as a collection of artworks from the developer, which promise to add a unique twist to the much loved feature.

My Kingdom for a Horse!
Every mount's primary function is to bring its rider to their point of destination, without the arduous task of walking across mountains to get there. However, in ELIGIUM players can also ride their mounts straight into the heart of battle, without having to worry about dismounting. Of course, in order to make the most of them, players should take care to properly develop their mounts, such as by feeding them, otherwise a victorious charge could well turn into a painful embarrassment.

The process of raising your first mount begins with an egg; obtained from the many vendors found littered throughout the world.  Once your mount has grown to adolescence it will give a boost to its owner's stats, but is not yet able to carry its master.  But once fully grown, mounts can take part in battles alongside their owners, becoming extremely powerful allies, and by equipping mounts with powerful items certain attributes can grow stronger.

Age of Enlightenment coming to Luvinia

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 01:22 PM PST

Luvinia Online has announced its first major expansion, the Age of Enlightenment, which will be released on November 30.

The expansion will introduce the second tier of subclasses for all primary classes, adding twelve new roles. These classes become available at level 80 after traveling to the Knowledge Pagoda, and introduce further specialized skills for each class to master.

The Knowledge Pagoda is one of the new areas coming to the expansion, and serves as the hub for players to begin their personal quest for a new subclass. More will also be coming with the release, including the raising of the level cap and new dungeons.

Luvinia Online is published by Outspark, which also publishes Fiesta Online and Project Powder.

Luvinia Online Expansion Ushers Age of Enlightenment

As expansive as the universe that houses the stars, an expansive mind shines with knowledge

SAN FRANCISCO – November 17, 2011 – Luvinia Online, the newest MMORPG from Outspark, is getting its first major expansion, the Age of Enlightenment. The new expansion brings a plethora of new features to the game, including a level cap increase, two new and massive dungeons, exciting new maps to explore, and plenty of new quests and content to discover that help further the exciting Luvinia storyline.

Perhaps the most anticipated feature coming in the patch is the inclusion of the 2nd tier subclasses. This new set of subclasses unlocks 12 unique roles for the game, available to the player at level 80. This new level of subclasses allows even more specialization and sometimes hybridization of a character, such as the Warrior class being able to pick the Paladin subclass. Additionally, the Paladin offers a variety of supportive and offensive buffs along with the defensive abilities of its parent class.

The new subclasses will require players to transverse the new Knowledge Pagoda which will be released with the expansion. In the floors of this seemingly giant book depository, players will partake in quests and acquire the items necessary to advance to the subclass of their choice. This new area will challenge players and advance the rich and elaborate personal storyline that develops as players immerse themselves in the game.

"We've been working hard with the developer, Shanda Entertainment, to get this anticipated expansion ready for our players," noted Philip Yun, CEO of Outspark. "We are committed to keeping Luvinia Online full of great content to engage both new and veteran players of the game and we know that the Age of Enlightenment is the first of many great expansions to come."
The expansion is currently scheduled for release on November 30th as part of the normal server maintenance for the game. As the launch day comes closer, there will be more information released on the new dungeons and the level cap raised, along with a few more details about new subclasses.

Eligium dates closed beta, goes toe-to-toe with Jedi and Sith

Eligium
Hey, do you have plans for December 19th? We didn't think so. Good thing that Frogster is here to save us from holiday boredom with the closed beta for Eligium!

That's right -- Eligium is heading into closed beta on the 19th, which is pretty gutsy considering that a majority of the MMO community might have something else on their mind come that date. Then again, the allure of Panda Monks might overcome gamers' curiosity.

Players interested in testing this fantasy MMO need to head over to the official website to register for the beta and then cross their fingers that a key will be sent their way. Frogster is limiting the size of the beta to test the servers and game mechanics properly. Also, the company has also said that, yes, as with most betas, Eligium's closed beta characters will definitely be wiped at some point.

[Thanks to Piaskowy for the tip!]

The Secret World - templar girl
Want to know more about The Secret World's Templar faction? Aside from reading up on everything related to Templar Week, the best thing you can do is tune in to Funcom's next Facebook developer Q&A session.

The shindig happens tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. EST, when lead content designer Joel Bylos and writer Ben Schroder will be fielding your Templar-related questions. Funcom's press release says that interested gamers are free to submit their questions in advance, but the devs may not be able to answer everything.

Thus far Templar Week has served up some new screens, art, and a few mission details, and the dev Q&A looks to be the icing on the cake. Funcom also notes that the Illuminati faction will be getting a similar week-long publicity treatment in the near future.

Star Trek Online - captain's viewport
Cryptic executive producer Stephen D'Angelo has posted another Star Trek Online Path to F2P dev diary. For the 23rd installment (yes, 23!), D'Angelo outlines a near future roadmap for the game as the business model transition continues.

D'Angelo says that STO will boast a Featured Episode Replay event for the remainder of November on the live server. The first week of December should see a new game build migrating to the live shard from the Tribble test server. This update will feature "new content, new systems, and many gameplay improvements," and D'Angelo characterizes it as a "significant" release.

How significant? It includes new Borg content (the Invasion of Defera), the new duty officer system, and several new events and dailies. There's more to read at the official STO website (including an upcoming Featured Episode series focused on the Dominion!), so check it out by following the link below.

Glitch dev lashes out against Zynga's business model

    Glitch
Not all social games developers are in love with Zynga's business model. Some are bucking against what Tiny Speck's Stewart Butterfield is calling a "scorched earth policy" that will do far more harm in the long run than what helps the industry now.

Butterfield is the co-founder of Tiny Speck, which recently launched the sleeper MMO hit Glitch. While both Glitch and Zynga's games are browser-based and use microtransactions to fund the titles, the similarities end there. Butterfield says that he is adverse to how Zynga creates artificial walls in its games: "The fundamental design of the game became 'Here's a stop sign in your gameplay, you can stop now and come back in a day, or you can keep on playing and it will cost you three bucks, or a buck, or ten bucks, or whatever it is.'"

Butterfield called Zynga's approach "unsavoury" and said that it leads to burned-out players and a "lame future" for the genre where gamers are unwilling to return. Ultimately, he predicts that people will forget Zynga's efforts entirely: "They won't be as into it as someone who's playing WoW is in to WoW, or someone who's playing EVE is into EVE, or even someone who's playing Civilization IV is into Civilization IV. It's a much lighter touch."

For more Stewart Bufferfield goodness, make sure to check out our interview with him on Massively Speaking!

Luvinia Online - caster in the forest
Outspark's gearing up for Luvinia Online's new expansion, and according to the company's latest press release, there's quite a lot to be excited about. The patch is called Age of Enlightenment, and it includes a level cap increase, two new dungeons, new explorable maps, and a generous helping of new quests and content.

Oh, and let's not forget the new second tier subclasses which unlock 12 new roles for level 80 players. Obtaining a new subclass will require a bit of effort, as Outspark says that players will need to "traverse the new Knowledge Pagoda" which is basically a "giant book depository" filled with quests and various items required for advancement.

How soon can I get my hands on this new expansion, you say? November 30th, according to Outspark, and the new content will go live during the regular server maintenance period.

RIFT opens the Ember Isle to players with a new trailer

      Posted: 17 Nov 2011 06:00 AM PST

Either they're communing with spirits, or it's time for an impromptu version of The King and I.
It's time to head off for an island adventure in RIFT. The heavily anticipated patch 1.6 has hit the servers, and that means players will be off to the brand-new Ember Isle, a massive zone that's stated to be twice the size of anything else. But that's not the only thing coming along with the patch -- there are new zone events, a new set of Planar Attunements, new group content (both a dungeon and a raid), and a new warfront mode.

Not quite enough to pique your interest? Then take a look at the trailer just past the cut, which gives an overview of the lore driving players to explore the island. There's more to the story than simply "the spot where the Kelari used to live," and the trailer shows it off in all its glory. Take a look past the break to watch it, perhaps while you fire up the game's launcher and get down to the brass tacks of updating.

World of Warcraft is doing quite well in China, thank you very much

        WoW
Earlier this month we heard the news that World of Warcraft's subscriber base took yet another substantial hit, although Blizzard was quick to say that most of these losses were coming from eastern countries like China. It's odd then that we've just received word that World of Warcraft is on the rise in China following an extremely profitable third quarter.

NetEase, which operates World of Warcraft in the region, announced that its Q3 earnings were actually up over the same time last year. Both revenues and profits for WoW in China are on the upswing, marking a 39.8% increase year-over-year. NetEase said that it pulled in $308.3 million in revenues, out of which $128.2 million is pure profit.

Subscriber hit or no, WoW continues to be a major force in the Asian market, and with numbers like these it's hard to imagine it going away any time soon.

There was a lot of backlog, naturally, but there were also some curious new game-related tie-ins that caught my eye. In addition to Arkham City and DC Universe Online: Legends titles, I also picked up installments one and two of Star Wars: The Old Republic - Lost Suns, which is apparently a five-issue special that offers a bit of backstory for BioWare's upcoming opus.

Multimedia crossovers are nothing new, of course, but this was the first time I'd seen MMO comic book products outside of a collector's edition box. What about you, Massively folk? Are you a sucker for MMO novels, comics, figurines, or other extra-game collectibles?

As it's Thanksgiving weekend in the US, it's fitting that BioWare is giving players something to be thankful for: one last, giant beta test of Star Wars: The Old Republic. So if you're interested in seeing if the hype matches the game, make sure you stay out of any turkey comas following Thursday!

According to SWTOR's Twitter, the test has been scheduled for November 25th through the 28th. This represents the largest beta test for the soon-to-be-released title yet, with hundreds of thousands -- perhaps millions -- of players invited to stress-test the servers.

The test might not technically be "open" beta, but it's pretty hard at this point not to get into it. Any player who registered for beta testing prior to November 11th is automatically included, and those that didn't can grab one of the thousands and thousands of keys floating out there -- including from us!

If you have questions about the beta test, it might behoove you to check out SWTOR's FAQ on the event.

All right, folks, it's that time again. No, not happy hour. That's not until later. It's Choose My Adventure time, so take a swig of the most potent nearby beverage and sit tight. Last week, you folks voted for me to give Final Fantasy XIV's dungeon-crawling a go so that I could have a sample of party mechanics and do something that wasn't a levequest.

However, after standing around for a couple of hours on Sunday and a few more hours on Monday, screaming my lungs out in Ul'Dah asking for a group, I came up empty-handed. The vast majority of parties I saw being advertised were for higher-level content (mostly level 30 to 40+), and I'm still sitting pretty at level 10 and change. So what did I do with my playtime instead? Well, I took the first runner-up (botany and alchemy) and went with that. And what did I glean from choppin' trees and mixin' chemicals? Well, just follow along past the cut and I'll tell you.

We're still in the dark about many of the mechanics behind Eligium, the upcoming fantasy MMO from Frogster, but we now know a bit more about who players can be within the context of the world. Two races have been unveiled on the official site: the Human race, with the classes of Warrior and Mage, and the Viridis, who can become Druids. The classes are locked to given races, meaning that each individual class says a great deal about the race as a whole.

Humans are the only race who appears to get two different classes, with Warriors as heavily armored wrecking balls and Mages as long-range purveyors of destruction. The Viridis, meanwhile, are a green-skinned people who formerly studied under the Elves before breaking free and mastering the art of nature magic. The first preview of basic Druid abilities is also available, which should help potential players get an idea of what they want to play when the game starts up.

MechWarrior Online developers answer forum questions

The future of warfare looks a lot like the rush hour of Detroit.
If you're looking forward to the future of warfare today, you're probably keeping a close eye on the development of MechWarrior Online. And the developers are no doubt aware of this, as they've just posted a lengthy set of answers on the game's official forums, covering a broad range of topics from update speed to character development. While the answers confirm that at this point the software is still yet to see an alpha test, there's still a great deal of information therein.

Aside from a few answers that are likely to prove discordant come launch (such as plans for biweekly update patches), the team is aiming at starting off with a strong PvP environment with persistent world elements in a similar fashion to MAG. PvE will not be in at launch, but it is on the table for later release. That's only the barest summary of the information in the full set of answers, which should keep any intent pilot eagerly anticipating his or her personal 'Mech.

It's patch day in Martial Empires, and gamigo has a hellish road in store for fans of the free-to-play action MMO. The Path to Purgatory update features a new survival mode challenge that pits players against hordes of monsters as they carve their way through 32 levels of a gigantic tower.

There's also a big nasty waiting at the end of the challenge, and that's only part of the package. The update also features various mounts and battle pets, guild research functionality, and a new quest series that stretches from level one through 55. gamigo is also planning a number of in-game events, according to its latest press release, and you can learn more about Martial Empires on the game's official website.

MMO Family: First Impressions of Project Exonaut

                Project Exonaut
Lately, I've been moving away from my "sword and board" mentality and instead checking out some MMOs that have faster gameplay, such as Vindictus' physics-based, arcade-style combat and Global Agenda's jetpack shooter battles. But while I've had fun grabbing gnolls by the throat and crushing them against the wall in Vindictus and fending off waves of zombies and chupacabras in Fallen Earth, the content isn't necessarily kid-friendly.

I wanted to find a game that had action, fast-paced combat, and jetpacks but still touched on all the things that make for a good family game. I stumbled on Project Exonaut, made by Cartoon Network, and decided to check it out. It's a browser-based, free-to-play game that pits you against other players in a futuristic setting. It's not quite an MMO and would probably fall under our Not So Massively heading, but I decided to try it out. Read on for a look at the game and my first impressions!

The Secret World - Templars in the forest
Templar Week continues at Funcom, and this time the firm is teasing fans of The Secret World with bits and pieces of the game's factional missions and mythology. Today we get a look at a rogue agent mission within what is ostensibly the world's oldest (and definitely its most well-known) secret society.

Funcom's dev diary paints the Templars as an uncompromising bunch, and players interested in joining the ranks of these ancient smiters of evil will travel to London, where they'll "feel the weight of thousands of years of history in the great arches of Temple Hall." They'll also be chasing a defector across the globe and even into some sort of alternate hell dimension, and you can read all about that and more at MMORPG.com.

[Update: PC Gamer's got a preview of bunch of spooky TSW monsters too!]

Luvinia Online has only been officially launched for a couple of months, but already there's a new expansion on the way. The update, Age of Enlightenment, brings with it the game's second tier of subclasses. One such subclass is the Bishop, an offshoot of the Priest archetype, and Massively has an exclusive blurb on what players can expect from the new healer. So click on past the cut for a short bio on the Bishop, and prepare for the Age of Enlightenment expansion to go live on November 30th.

GamesCampus is raising the level cap on its Scarlet Legacy MMO, and players can now strive for level 55 while toodling around the martial arts title's fantastical setting.

The game's latest content update also boasts 35 new skills, a new story quest line, and more than 400 new items (including epic gear that is designed to do away with cookie-cutter avatars). GamesCampus has also added more than 130 new crafting recipes and several new maps. Windy Cliff and Windy Valley are designed for players between levels 51 and 55, and the new Altar of Wind dungeon is ideal for folks between 47 and 50. Oh TERA, forever teasing us with new press releases about BAMs in lieu of meaty gameplay details (or heaven forbid, a release date). The latest blurb comes courtesy of Frogster, the fantasy title's European publisher, and it features three new videos that provide a sneak peek at three more of the game's ubiquitous big-ass monsters.

Each video runs for about a minute and each gives future denizens of Arborea a good look at the ovolith, the teralith, and the kumas BAMs in their native environments. Whether you're into creepy spiders, giant rock dudes, or beer-bellied behemoths that shoot death rays out of their stomachs (really), you'll probably find something to your liking in one of Frogster's new clips. Head past the break to see them all.

Sharpen your blades and hone your spells, Telarans. RIFT's patch 1.6 goes live today, and it brings a ton of new content for players to experience. The new Ember Isle zone gives players a variety of new quests to complete, and the addition of sourcewells to the Island will allow players to fight off invasions on their own terms. Social players looking for a challenge will find just that in the form of the new non-linear instance (known as Caduceus Rise) and new world boss mobs.

And of course, what is new content without new ways to progress your character? The second tier of planar attunement is now available, allowing players to further customize the way their characters play. For the full details, check out the patch notes over on the RIFT official forums.

Mortal Online players are going to have to wait a little bit longer for the game's The Dawn expansion, but in the meantime, Star Vault is busily working on the game's newly added territory control system. The newest addition to the system is a political map and a feature the team calls Chronicles of Nave.

The political map allows players to track which territories are under whose control in real time, so they always know where the fights are raging. The Chronicles of Nave, on the other hand, is a ladder ranking system, which ranks players and guilds according to a variety of statistics. The current system displays players' stats and builds, though there is an option to turn this feature off in case a player would rather keep his build a secret. Both of these features are still in beta, so players can expect them to be updated with expanded functionality. For the full details, check out the forum post over at the Mortal Online official forums.

As part of a refocusing on developing EVE Online, CCP Games has recently taken us on a video tour of its art, features and core technology departments. This week it's the turn of the customer relations and Virtual Worlds departments as CCP Guard finds out what makes EVE tick. In his visit to the den of GMs, he finds that important stuck queue petitions are answered on average in 15 minutes, a response time much improved compared to a few years ago.

Guard chats to several people from CCP's Virtual Worlds department, which is responsible for keeping all the EVE server clusters online and improving performance. CCP Hunter discusses what goes on during EVE's daily downtime and reveals that the once hour-long period has been reduced to only nine minutes per day. We also find out about recent hardware upgrades and the infamous "supernode" deployed for large-scale nullsec wars.

Dr. Evil says one meeellion testing hours is quite a lot
If it seemed like everyone and their dog got in on last weekend's Star Wars: The Old Republic beta event, well, they did. BioWare invited tens of thousands of Star Wars fans to the TOR testing party, and probably a few Star Trek fans and the blue glowy spirits of dearly departed Jedi Knights as well. The mass invites are designed to strain the servers prior to the game's December 15th launch date, and BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk says this is just the beginning.

"One crazy number is we had over a million hours of testing over the weekend. It was a huge test, and there are even bigger ones coming. The key thing is for us to take those learnings, apply them and make the service really stable. We're happy with the game," Zeschuk told Eurogamer.

Zeschuk and his BioWare cohorts aren't exactly raising pinkies to lips like an overconfident supervillain, though. "Everyone's cautiously optimistic. We're all very paranoid," Zeschuk said, before going on to explain how BioWare will carefully control TOR's launch availability to ensure a smooth experience.
