German State Declares Facebook Like Button Illegal

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 02:34 PM PDT

likeFacebook's pervasive web presence can be a little creepy at times, but one German state is apparently fed up with Zuckerberg's shenanigans. Thilo Weichert, head of the Independent Centre for Privacy Protection of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, says that the 'Like' button is illegal and sites based in the state must remove it or be fined up to 50,000 Euros.

The objection Weichert cites is the data transmission and tracking that Facebook does when users click the Like button. Facebook uses Likes to build profiles of people for use in advertising. Weichert says this practice is illegal because the user is not sufficiently informed of this.

Sites that are found to be using the ubiquitous Like button after the end of September face possible legal action. This only applies to Schleswig-Holstein, but we have to wonder if other regions will follow.

Wordpress Powers 15% Of Websites, Makes Freelance Developers Millions of Dollars

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 11:37 AM PDT

The state of the union may not be looking so hot, but the State of the Word couldn't be brighter. No, we're not talking about "Sexting" being added to the Oxford English Dictionary; we're talking about Wordpress founder Matt Mullenweg's annual State of the Word address. The blogging platform continues to dominate the Web, and hey – if you're one of those un- or underemployed individuals who've been hit hard by the recession, you may want to consider becoming a Wordpress developer.

Mullenweg reports that Wordpress now powers 14.7 percent of the top million sites on the Web – a six percent increase over last year – and 22 percent of all new domains in the US run on the platform. Impressive numbers, sure, but we can already hear you asking "How's that help me get that paper?"

You see, Wordpress also conducted a user and developer survey, and over 18,000 people responded. Of those 18,000 respondents, over 6,800 people were self-employed Wordpress developers responsible for the creation of 170,000-plus Wordpress websites. That's a lot of CMS ninja-ry. The better part? Those 6,800 freelancers charged an average hourly rate of $50. Mullenweg helpfully points out that if each site took 3 hours to create, that's $29.5 million worth of work. With numbers like that, we may stop tuning in to the State of the Union and focus on the much more positive (and apparently job creating!) State of the Word.

Report: Intel To Delay Cedar Trail-M Netbook Platform, Atom CPUs

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 11:07 AM PDT

People talk about tablets signaling the death of PCs – heck, look at HP shopping around its PC operation if you want a hot, fresh example – but the segment that's really getting kicked in the family jewels are netbooks. The iPad and its Android brethren have just decimated netbook sales. Intel may be delivering another bit of bad news for the small-form laptops; reports say the chip maker's delaying the launch of the new Cedar Trail-M netbook platform and pushing back the release of its new Atom CPUs.

Cedar Trail-M was originally supposed to ship next month, but DigiTimes and its as always anonymous sources say that graphics driver problems and delayed Windows 7 certification has lead Intel to push back the launch date back until November. The Cedar Trail-M platform includes two new Atom CPUs (the N2800 and N2600) that pack integrated GPUs and DirectX 10.1 support.

The netbook-friendly Atom D2700 and D2500 CPUs are also rumored to have been pushed back to November. DigiTimes' sources don't seem to think the delays are a big deal, since netbooks aren't really selling and AMD offers netbooks with similar capabilities. To be honest, we'd kind of forgotten about Cedar Trail-M thanks to all the Ultrabook news Intel's tossing around these days.

Firefox 7 (And Its Improved Memory Usage) Hits Beta Channel

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 10:38 AM PDT

"Leaner and meaner" are two terms you may use to describe a malnourished lion suffering through a drought, but the same phrase also applies to a cornered Firefox. Google's Chrome took a bit of the luster away from Mozilla's star browser. Rather than simply shrug their shoulders, Firefox's developers rolled up their sleeves and got hard at work on the MemShrink program, an initiative to reduce the browser's horrible memory leaks. Members of the team have reported great successes; now, with the release of Firefox 7 Beta, you can check out the memory improvements for yourself.

The Future of Firefox blog says it achieved the reported 20 to 50 percent memory improvement using a couple of different tactics:

  • Optimized Memory Use: Reduces memory use and improves performance areas including responsiveness, startup and page load time, even in complex websites and Web apps
  • Improved memory management: The JavaScript garbage collector works more frequently to free up memory and improve performance when you have many tabs open or keep Firefox running for a long time

Firefox 7 Beta also includes a number of additional tweaks and changes. Most of them help back end work, but everyday users should noticed faster Firefox Sync times and quicker HTML5 Canvas-based animation rendering.

Intrigued? Want to help test drive Firefox 7? Head over to the Firefox Beta Channel to give the browser a whirl. The final release is expected to launch September 27.

Canonical's Ubuntu Server 11.10 to Flex ARM Support

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 09:56 AM PDT

Canonical hasn't been bashful about backing ARM, injecting support for the alternative processor into its desktop Ubuntu platform nearly three years ago before tablets and 1GHz smartphones made ARM the talk of the town. Now comes word that Ubuntu Server 11.10 will support ARM processors and ship simultaneously with x86 and x86-64 platforms.

"With Ubuntu Server becoming the de-facto standard for cloud infrastructure and big data solutions, we recognize that power consumption is key to efficient scaling. Building on four years of working with ARM, we are now taking the step of supporting Ubuntu Server on ARM. We expect these processors to be used in a variety of use cases including microservers," Chris Kenyon, VP of OEM services at Canonical, said in a blog post.

Kenyon says the base image of all three releases will be the same regardless of architecture, with all three versions sharing a common kernel baseline. And lest anyone thinks Canonical is simply dipping its server toes in ARM's waters, the open source software maker intends to make the ARM architecture part of the long term support (LTS) version of Ubuntu Server in 12.04 and other future releases.

HP Explains Decision to Shop Its PC Business

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 09:28 AM PDT

Hewlett Packard created more waves than a tsunami yesterday when the OEM confirmed rumors that it plans to dump its PC business, yet still managed to surprise industry analysts by announcing the end of operations for webOS devices, and specifically the slow selling TouchPad and webOS phones. Now that the the dust has settled, it's time to look at why HP thinks reinventing itself is a good idea.

In one of several press releases issued late yesterday, HP said it has the full support of its board of directors to evaluate "strategic alternatives" to its Personal Systems Group, "including the exploration of the separation of its PC business into a separate company through a spin-off or other transaction." In the same breath, HP makes the claim that PSG is the leading manufacturer of PCs in the world with revenues topping $41 billion in 2010. If that's the case, why even consider moving away from PCs? The answer, according to HP, is evolution.

"The personal computing market is evolving with new form factors and application ecosystems," HP explains. "Given these realities, HP believes it is in the best interests of the company and its shareholders to explore ways for PSG to position itself to address these rapid changes and maintain its technological and market leadership positions."

With tablets and smartphones and who knows what else threatening the PC landscape, HP is betting big on software, so much so that it's spending billions on Autonomy, a major player in infrastructure software for the enterprise.

"In March we outlined a strategy for HP, built on cloud, solutions and software to address the changing requirements of our customers, shaped heavily by secular market trends that are redefining how technology is consumed and deployed. Since then, we have observed the acceleration of these market trends, which has led us to evaluate additional steps to transform HP to meet emerging opportunities," said Léo Apotheker, HP president and chief executive officer. "We believe the acquisition of Autonomy, combined with the exploration of alternatives for PSG, would allow HP to more effectively compete and better execute its focused strategy."

In sort, HP is threatened by the move to mobile devices, and in particular tablets. In speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Apotheker said, "The tablet effect is real, and sales of the TouchPad are not meeting our expectations." Had the TouchPad sold better, or been able to sell at all, perhaps HP could have held onto its market share lead for mobile PCs (which includes tablets), but it yielded the No. 1 spot to Apple. On top of it all, WSJ reports that even though HP's PC division still makes a profit, it's a low margin business.

Rather than wait until things get really bad, HP would rather shop around its PC business while it still has value, and expects a deal to be done within the next 12-18 months.

Gelid's Tries Rearranging Heatpipes in New GX-7 Cooler for Gamers

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 08:44 AM PDT

Gelid believes the key to improving air cooling performance lies in the orientation of heatpipes. The company's latest cooler, the GX-7 (or CC-GX7-01-A, if you prefer), falls under Gelid's Gamer branding and utilizes seven heatpiples arranged in a way the company claims facilitates better heatflow than most traditional heatsinks.

"Traditional heatpipe arrangement of high-end heatsink heatpipes are usually soldered on one row. Therefore the heat absorption capacity of the outer heatpipe will be negatively affected when there are more than 5 heatpipes," Gelid explains. "To solve this problem a special array of heatpipes was used on GX-7 to take full advantage of all 7 heatpipe heat transfer capacity. On GX-7 two heatpipes were soldered on top of three middle heatpipes."

In addition to clumping the heatpipes together (see our photo gallery below for a visual of what Gelid's talking about), Gelid talks up the V-shaped aluminum fins used in the center of the GX-7. According to Gelid, this allows air to reach the heatsink more evenly and eliminates the creation of hotspots.

The GX-7 comes with a single 120mm fan and optionally supports a second one. Like everything else about the GX-7, Gelid talks up the included fan, pointing out that the "fan blade winglets were designed to achieve larger airflow and greater static pressure."

You can purchase the GX-7 for $65 effectively immediately.

On the Hunt for New Blood

Three new dungeons open up their gates in Dungeon Fighter Online's August content update, new Monster Metamorphosis event teaser video now available

Three new dungeons are opening up their doors in Dungeon Fighter Online, the side-scrolling MMO brawler from Nexon, along with a monster metamorphosis event. The update, dubbed Act XII: New Blood, is due on August 24.

Dungeon Fighters will soon be able to traverse all new areas opening up in Hill Vale and Antwer Canyon. Southern Dale, which will be open to players of all skill levels, will introduce Bahol Callow, a new NPC that used to be the most respected commander of the de Ios Empire.  Along with Callow's guidance, dungeon fighters will battle through Southern Dale to face its three Boss Monsters, Bogut the Giant, Warlock Firan and York the Nightmare.

It is here in Southern Dale that players will be able to participate in the Metamorphosis event. By picking up Cryptid Elements and participating in specific quests, players can morph into one of several monsters for 90 seconds, including a Goblin Shooter, Dorniar RTX-1 and Mecha Tau.

Players level 59 and above will face new enemies in the North Ghent Gate and Ghent Battlefield dungeons. Players will need to band together in an effort to defeat Field Commander Babylon, the mechanically adept commander of the Kartel Army in Empyrean, and Machine-Arm Warjack, a feared and diabolical general – part man, part machine.

Additionally, the new update will introduce changes to DFO's Guild system with an updated UI, guild level expansion and other new functions. Players will soon be able to apply to the guild of their choice, and the Guild Master – along with his or her designees – can pick and choose which Dungeon Fighter to invite among their ranks. Furthermore, new guild functions such as the "Featured Guild Member" will grant more benefits for guild members when they party up. The max guild level will also be raised from 10 to 17, meaning more stat and EXP boosts will be generously awarded.  A Guild Safe will also be introduced, wherein a portion of the communally amassed gold will be deposited for future guild-related actions, such as leveling up. Finally, bonus EXP will be awarded to guilds who promote stellar attendance and dungeon participation.

Act XII: New Blood will feature the Friend Referral System, which awards unique prizes for those who recruit new friends into the world of Dungeon Fighter Online. Both the Dungeon Fighter Recruiter and their friends will benefit from the system with HP and MP multipliers, valuable items and more.

Dragon Nest adds PvP

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 01:57 PM PDT

Today’s update for Dragon Nest adds player versus player arena combat for players above level 10.

Two game modes, Rounds and Respawn, kick off PvP in Dragon Nest. Rounds is a kill-all style game, where the winning team is the one which eliminates the entire opposing team. In Respawn, players respawn after death, and kills tally up points for each team, with the winner reaching the score mark first. Both modes support from 2 to 16 players (1v1 to 8v8).

Competing in PvP lets players gain Arena EXP, ranks, and medals, the latter of which can be exchanged for crafting materials and luster pouches. A ladder system will be added in a future update.

Dragon Nest is published by Nexon, which also publishes Vindictus and Combat Arms.

Nexon releases first PvP content update for Dragon Nest

Nexon America released a Dragon Nest content update today, adding award-winning player versus player combat to the popular action MMORPG. Two PvP game modes and five distinct maps are now available for players level 10 and higher.

Rounds and Respawn are the two game modes now available, and additional modes are planned for the future. In Rounds, a given team wins by eliminating all opposing players. In Respawn, opponents continue to respawn after they are vanquished, and a point is earned for every kill. The first team to reach the designated score wins. Teams can consist of one, two, three, four, six or eight players each for both game modes.

From the Arena lobby, players can form a team and choose a game type, or they can jump into the action immediately with the quick join option. Players can also join into battles that are already underway if there is space available.

As a reward for engaging in PvP, players can earn Arena EXP and achieve prestigious Arena ranks. Players also earn medals which can be exchanged from the Arena PvP vendor for valuable crafting materials and luster pouches. A PvP ladder system is also in the works for Dragon Nest, where players can track their PvP performance in detail and compare themselves to other players.

Overview

Drakensang Online Overview

Drakensang Online is a free-to-play fantasy themed MMO version of the PC game called The Dark Eye: Drakensang. The original series created by Radon Labs is based on the German tabletop RPG hit with the same title. Today, it's still acknowledged as a favorite among D&D fans and gamers alike. In this revised edition players join the fight against the dark realms and its inhabitants invading the lands of Grimmagstone to Shorefolk. Similar to the classic Diablo 2 or Runes of Magic heroes have to explore various dungeons and kill off hordes of monsters. Embed powerful spells into weapons for additional strength in battles and challenge others in the PvP Arena to showcase your skills. There are two primary classes that players can choose from are Dragonknight and Spellweaver.

Classes:

Dragonknight – Armed with an assortment of heavy artillery these knights are ready for war. This class of fearless warriors has incredible strength. They drink the blood of magical dragons for an edge on the battlegrounds. Rage and sheer skill is their secret to victory.

Spellweaver – These mages tap into the elements and their own spiritual powers to destroy opponents. They have high levels of intellect which aids them in mastering some of the most difficult spells that have been passed down through the centuries. Mana and various enchantments make Spellweavers worthy rivals or allies.

Drakensang Online Full Review

By Ange Perdu

Drakensang Online is a 3D medieval browser-based fantasy themed MMORPG where players enter a world in utter turmoil. Heinous monsters from the dark realm have broken free and are wreaking havoc in neighboring territories. The prince has disappeared and rumors are flying that the mighty Dragon is going to return to destroy the human race. A war between beast and man has begun. Players step into the role of a heroic Dragonknight or Spellweaver on a mission to end the chaos. Complete quests, kill challenging creatures, explore dungeons, and participate in PvP arena battles. Become part of history, as the brave warrior that saved mankind from extinction.

Gremlin Ambush, the Gameplay

Players start out with several lengthy quests to tackle. NPCs stationed throughout little villages will often give heroes multiple tasks to accomplish within each mission. Quests usually involve acquiring items, relaying messages, and monster killing. Collect fish by slaying sluggish Bog Beasts in Darbmoor or find pleat-cutters through the elimination of pesky gremlins. The combat can be intense. Warriors are usually ambushed by 30-100 monsters while trekking through various terrains. The creatures in this world are aggressive. Similar to Diablo's hack-n-slash style users are constantly clicking to fight off droves of skeletons, slimy ogres, magic wielding vultures, and devilish gremlins. Although the combat is fast-paced killing the same creatures for different tasks can feel repetitive at times. There are also a large number of item retrieving tasks. Gather water from the well, picking grumble cabbage, or collecting the ale from the tavern in the Northwest require players to click and interact with certain objects instead of traditional monster slaying. It's a nice addition that's seldom seen in browser-based games. Much like the game War of Titans heroes have hundreds of quests. Completing them earns XP, coins, and rare equipment. Travelling is a chore during questing. There's no auto-walk. As players trek through various fields monsters quickly ambush. The background music speeds up to aid in the adrenaline rush of a full onslaught. Although it's quite fun the grinding is relentless.

Dungeons & PvP Battles

Occasionally quests will require players to venture into dungeons or secret underground vaults. A dungeon's mode can be set to normal or difficult for more of a challenge before entering. They usually feature higher level beasts and boss creatures that must be defeated in order to advance. Some dungeons are possible solo but most of them require players to team up and raid as a party. There's an integrated chat feature that's easy to use and several base towns scattered through the world where players can socialize with others. Although Drakensang Online has a decent sized community the global chat is relatively quiet. The Facebook Connect option allows users to invite their friends which can be helpful when attempting to form a party. As players level up new empires are unlocked. The world is huge. Journey through quaint medieval towns, sweet pastures, foggy swamps, and intimidating forests. When heroes reach Kingshill they can enter the PvP arena to duel others. In this area players are able to take a break from the excessive grinding, flex their superiority, and showcase their mastered skills.

These battles are primarily for honor and glory. It's not a major part of the gameplay.

Ice Nova to Teleporting

The skill progression in Drakensang Online could be better. There are only a few dozen skills to master and most of the moves are simply exaggerated forms of the previous one. They can be learned for free or for a small fee of in-game coins. The level requirements for mastering each skill is spaced out making the overall process seem slow. Perform the magic blast which sends a ball of energy towards opponents exploding upon impact or summon a meteor from the heavens to fall and crush enemies. Heroes are able to develop their abilities in producing ice blasts, explosions, lightening shots, and teleporting during combat. Although the animations are great players don't really get to play around with different combinations until their character has reached level 18 or higher. To execute various skills Spellweavers rely on mana and Dragonknights operate on rage. Both can be accumulated during monster kills or purchased in NPC shops.

Weapons of a Spellweaver

The game features a balanced currency system that allows users to purchase virtually anything using coins earned through questing or looting. There's a small selection of items available in the NPC shops. Players can purchase health elixirs, mana potions, rings, amulets, scrolls, crystal balls, Simple Hero Breakfasts, Fruit of Insight, keys, chests, and inventory expansion bags. The weapons come in different variations of swords and staffs depending on a hero's class. Buy the Mystical Scepter, Enchanted Wand, Journeyman Staff, Bone Staff, Mystical Staff, Long Axe, Double-Handed Hammer, Bastard Sword, Pollaxe, Great Sword, Blade, Seax, and Alan's Heroic two-handed sword. In terms of character customization, players are limited. Gear consists of leather caps, linen gloves, pauldrons, apprentice boots, cloth shirts, and standard mystical armor. All of the heroes resemble each other making it difficult to find accessories that will distinguish your character from the rest.

Final Verdict: Good

Overall, saving humankind from utter destruction is loads of fun in this fantasy themed MMORPG. Although it's still rough around the edges players get to experience the classic PC style of a hack-n-slash with a continued storyline from the previous installment of the Dark Eye series. This standalone game takes players into a medieval world where dragons and demons are running amuck. Unlike most RPGs where you have to look to find trouble, it finds you in Drakensang Online. Fight off droves of savage freaks, raid dungeons with friends, and battle others in the PvP arena to become a legend in your own right. Fans of the original series or gamers that enjoy titles like Diablo 2, Runes of Magic, and War of Titans will find this browser-based version thoroughly entertaining.
